Sorry if I’ve been away from the monitor all day, but I’ve been busy trying to get my head back to normal size and, at the time of this writing, I’m not sure that I’ve managed.

I’m sure that you all know LTC Oliver North, USMC (Ret.), unless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere. I also know that he’s a somewhat controversial figure, even on our side of the aisle. To me, however, he’s a guy who did something he knew to be illegal because he felt, at the very core of his being, that it was the right thing to do. He then, once he got caught, ‘fessed up to it and took the rap, unashamed and honest about the motives for what he did, never once complaining about “the unfairness of it all” or trying to weasel out of it by blaming somebody else.

Did he violate the pro-communist Boland Amendment, passed by liberals in order to protect their genocidal, communist Sandinista allies, by funneling money to the anti-communist Contra patriots of Nicaragua? You betcha he did, and I’m sure that those funds were put to good use, putting bullets in the skulls of communist murderers and thereby helping to lift the totalitarian jackboot of socialism from the throat of the Nicaraguan people.

I’d have done the same damn thing if given half an opportunity, and I’d have been proud of it too.

And I hope that I’d have been able to take the hit in the same dignified manner as LTC North if I’d been caught.

Sometimes you just have to do the right thing. It being the right thing doesn’t make it any less illegal, but that’s a different subject. If some future liberal Congress were to pass a law prohibiting self-defense and the right to keep and bear arms, it’d certainly be illegal to refuse to hand over your weapons and make yourself and your loved ones helpless victims in a socialist dystopia, and I’d certainly become a criminal, because I wouldn’t give half a fuck.

Were LTC North’s actions illegal? Absolutely, and he never denied it.

Were they the right thing to do? Helping defeat murderous communist swine? Is that a stupid question or what? If your actions serve to stamp out that soul-robbing, murderous, cancer on humanity, it’s hard for me to see how you can possibly be wrong in anything you do. The only good communist is a dead communist. I’ve seen what those foul, subhuman impersonations of everything that is evil in this world do to those under their control, and I wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy. There is no fate so brutal and painful that I would consider it over the top where communists are concerned. And if you have to disobey a modern-day Stalin-Hitler pact made by liberals in order to deliver a painful kick to their private parts… Oh well, so be it.

So when our good friends, LCs Rob and Val, invited us to an event at church featuring LTC North as a speaker… Well, to say that we jumped at the chance would be an understatement.

Calling his speech inspirational would be an understatement too. He spoke of the bravery, selflessness and faith of our troops overseas, and how he’s the luckiest man in the world for having a job that means he gets to hang around with them all the time. He spoke of the courage that comes from knowing where you stand, why you stand there, where you’re going to and why you’re going there. Faith in yourself, faith in your cause and faith in G-d.

231 years ago today, 56 brave souls got together and decided to commit to a hopeless and illegal cause. They knew that they were breaking the most serious laws passed by mortal men, they knew that they’d forfeit everything, including their lives, if they were to fail, but they also knew that it was the right thing to do. They had faith in their cause, however, they knew where they were going and they knew why they were going there and, most of all, they knew that they could do no other. That some things are worth fighting for, some principles are above any law that man may pass, and that a life lived ignoring that fact isn’t worth living at all.

So they put their pens to paper and pledged their lives, property and sacred honor to that cause.

On Wednesday we celebrate that devotion to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and, most importantly what it brought about.

After the service today, my family and I had the opportunity to meet LTC North and, after 20 years of wanting to do so, I finally got to shake the hand of a man who knew where he was going and why he was going there, a humble and extremely likable man who chose to do what’s right and face the consequences. With a warm smile that lit up his entire face, he grabbed my hand and thanked me for coming, then helped me corral in the Heirs (never an easy task) for a group photo. Then, as we turned to leave, with a throng of people still wanting to meet him, he reached out and shook my hand again, thanking me once more for coming.

And as I looked into his eyes and thanked him again for his service and for his speech, I saw again what I’d seen 20 years ago: A quiet, friendly and unassuming man who knew what he was and what he believed in and made no apologies for it, right or wrong.

It’s a pity there wasn’t a bar, or I would’ve liked to buy him a drink and shoot the breeze for a few hours. I have a feeling that, for once, I’d be too busy listening to keep my mouth running.

Maybe one day.

    Terrific!, Sire.

I envy You the opportunity you were given; and yet I know without a doubt that it was not wasted on You and the Empress. I missed a booksigning LTC North was at on Pendleton once by inches, but will keep my ears open for another opportunity.

Two fine men shook hands today - outstanding.

What a wonderful opportunity you had! I wish I could have seen it. Far from hiding behind laws, as the left often does, as per that dipshit accusing you of wanting to shoot cops, he broke them in honor of a greater belief….of the inherent freedom, the God given right all human beings should share…..to be all you can be, to do as you wish to do, to worship as you see fit………….to share with whom you decide to share…..
    Well put, Sire…and thanks.

Awesome opportunity you had Sire. LTC North is a man whom we respect deeply. M had the chance to meet him at a signing for his book “Mission: Compromised” and he was walking on cloud nine for days afterwards. I’d love the chance to shake his hand and tell him that I am proud of the stand he took.

As to liberty, the heros who signed the great document pledged themselves to buy liberty with their lives. Liberty is never unalienable; it must be redeemed regularly with the blood of patriots or it always vanishes. Of all the so-called natural human rights that have ever been invented, liberty is least likely to be cheap and is never free of cost.

At the time LtC Ollie was giving his testimony, I was typing a letter (the old-fashioned way) to Senator In-the-way, informing him that I had violated the Boland Ammendent too, by contributing to a Contra fund being managed by SOF. And then I demanded that he cease giving all his attention to Ollie and devote equal amounts of attention to all the rest of us who had also violated, deliberately, their Boland Ammendment. And I sent a carbon to SOF with another check, just for spite. Evenutally I got a snotty non-reply from one of In-the-way’s staff weasels. Almost as good, I made the Letters column of SOF under an earlier name.

Later at CPAC ‘95, I got to meet the Colonel twice!, and part of my treasured legacy will be a signed copy of his book.

I had only been in the Army for about a year when the Iran-Contra shit hit the fan. Was a proud member of what I considered “Ron Reagan’s Army of Europe”, in the old 8th ID. If I am not mistaken, we had about 490,000 freakin’ troops just in Europe, at the time!

I remember LTC North’s testimony before Congress. The man was the textbook definition of honor, honesty, integrity, and great big round hairy BALLS!

Misha, I think it is awesome that you got to meet the man. I hope to share that honor with you, someday… He is one of my personal heroes.

I remember the horrific coverage of Oliver North’s trial….. The only impression you could come away with was that he was some sort of war criminal the like of which we haven’t seen since the late 40’s.

As I was a child and deeply entrenched in the Socialist dogma of my youth, for the longest time I thought poorly of the man. Thankfully in adulthood, I have modified that opinion after actually getting facts and not slanted smears designed to sully a good mans name.

I’ve always held a higher regard for Right and Morality than Law. Law is impermanent and flawed, the product of opinion and compromise and political aims. Right and Morality are eternal and have no loopholes or clauses for debate. Looks like I have some company in this belief……

    Absofuckinglutely Awesome !!!!

I would treasure that photo, and some day the heirs can appreciate the presence of a true American Hero. The real deal, unpretentious and ever the gentleman. Perhaps his greatest legacy was the thrashing he gave during his Senate subcommittee testimony. I recall it well and those weasels did their best to intimidate and slander an honorable man, yet he ‘held the line’ with them.

While we’re at it, Ollie is the Founder and Honorary Chairman of the Freedom Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational assistance to the children of our brave service men and women, along with active support for their families. Along with Sean Hannity, an annual series of concerts is held at various locations throughout the country. Country Western music and a stellar cast of conservative speakers are featured. We’ve attended two of them and it’s an incredible experience of screaming patriotism at it’s finest. As an aside, my Rottie Tee-Shirt was a massive hit at last year’s with numerous grins, hand-shakes and thumbs-up by many of the participants.

Highly recommended for a recharge of your patriotic batteries.

I would disagree that Col. North did anything illegal. I watched most of the Iran-Contra hearings, and there were a lot of interesting things that came out of them that the LSM, naturally, never reported on.

For instance, one of the first witnesses called was some White House attorney, who was asked why they pursued the policy they did, even knowing that it violated the so-called “Boland Amendment”. The answer was very simple. The WH attorney replied that they had consulted with several constitutional scholars on the validity of the Boland Amendment, and every one of them said it was unconstitutional, period.

Boys and girls, you could have heard a pin drop in that hearing room after he said that. The witness was immediately dismissed and no more was said about that aspect of the issue, especially by the Commiecrats.

They all knew full well it was unconstitutional on it’s face. And even after North testified, they really could not say just a whole lot about it. Sure, you had some of the expected speechifying disguised as questioning. But when it was all over with, after all the bloviating about how they were going to impeach the hated Reagan, etc, ad nauseam, it all ended up a storm in a teapot.

The most they could hang on Col. North was that he used some of the funds they’d gotten from the Iranians to buy a security system for his home, and a set of snow tires for his car. Big fucking deal.

And all the “weapons” they sold to the Iranians were actually carefully chosen so that none could be used against us, but could be used for their war with Iraq.

And the money which ended up supporting the Contras paid off. It forced the Commie Sandinistas to hold fair and open elections, at which time the Nicaraguan people promptly voted the bastards out.

There was an essay written by P. J. O’Rourke, which ended up in one of his books, on that election (he was there) which was hilarious. All those Commiecrats wetting their pants, people like Chris Dodd, Teddy Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, etc, etc, because their good buddy Danny Ortega had been voted out.

“Iran Contra” worked perfectly, and the only real illegality was the Boland amendment itself. Don’t get me wrong; I have nothing but the highest regard for Col. North, but they couldn’t really do anything to him, other than that fiasco of a hearing. But he did a helluva job facing those Commiecrat assholes down at said hearing, and did a beautiful job of it, too…:)

I only remember one moment from those hearings:

When Who-Even-Cares asked LTC North in so-many words if he had taken the money from selling the arms to Iran (which greased the wheels of getting Hez hostages released) and used it to fund the Contras against the commie Sandinistas, he answered in the affirmative, and then smiled a little half-smile and added:

“I thought it was a pretty neat idea.”

The man just stood there & took it.

If I knew he didn’t, I’d get the first year for him.

Actually I don’t, which is a shameful omission on my part, especially considering that this humble site was mentioned favorably in it during the run-up to the ‘04 elections (which, when I was told about it, almost made me fall out of my chair).

    Absolutely I am, brother!

When were you mentioned in SOF? I may have the issue laying around somewhere.

You would think that I could remember a thing like that, wouldn’t you? I mean, I even went and got a copy of that issue (and then promptly lost it. The Heirs may have appropriated it for paper plane duty or something, the little dears).

It wasn’t a huge mention either, it was just a blurb about anti-Fuckface websites worth checking out and I happened to be on the list, but it was a huge deal to me. I couldn’t help but thinking about how I, as a youngster overseas, finally managed to find a newspaper store with a “foreign” section that carried it.

Heh. One of these days, I’ll tell you how much fun it was checking that magazine out of a store in a Euro-socialist country. It wasn’t illegal or anything, but it sure attracted some arched eyebrows and funny stares from time to time ;)

Anyway, never in my wildest imagination back then would I have thought that little old me would one day be mentioned in that magazine that I bought and wore out every issue of but, then again, back then I would’ve never imagined that I’d one day come home, and I’m home now :)

Any rate, it was during the run-up to the election, so I suppose that the only way of finding out would be to start with the November ‘04 issue and go backwards from there (I seem to recall that it was around June/July, though).

Heh. One of these days, I’ll tell you how much fun it was checking that magazine out of a store in a Euro-socialist country.

Oh yeah, go into any of the many newsagents stocking it and you’d think you just bought a child porn magazine that specialised in post-mortem photos. I actually got asked not to come back to the Worcester WH Smiths for buying it, even though they sell it, right up there with all the sporting magazines.

Funny story, vaguely OT. As a bachelor, I frequented a small indian run corner store down the street from me. One time, while in there buying cornish pasties and beer I decided to peruse the magazine rack. After selecting some soft-core porn and a tattoo magazine (I was in the process of choosing my first ink back then, so I read every tat mag I could find) and went up to pay for my stuff. Groceries, rung up fine. Skin mag, stuffed in the bag with the groceries. Tattoo mag. The muslim lady (with headscarf but no mask) got wide-eyed, then quickly looked around like she expected to be harassed, stuffed my issue of Tattoo International into a brown paper bag then handed it to me with a “hurry up and hide this” gesture. Now bear in mind, the skin mag she rang up was fairly raunchy by UK standard and she had just tucked that one into the mostly transparent bag with my Stella and grub…..

Still makes me chuckle even now.
