This requires your immediate attention!

It’s nothing new that the D.C. weasels, unwilling to touch the third rail of gun control, often try to sneak disarmament through the back door and that’s exactly what’s going on here.

Sure, it won’t affect firearms as such, you just won’t be able to get anything to feed them with, thanks to the new OSHA regulations they’re trying to ram through as quickly as possible.

Mandatory shutdown and evacuation of all ammunition factories during approaching thunderstorms? No display of ammunition and firearms in the same store? Involuntary strip searches of customers to make sure that they don’t have lighters or matches near ammunition?

Contact details at the Imperial Firearms Advisor’s site linked above. Remind them that you’re a gunowner and that you vote!

UPDATE: Speaking of the NRA, here’s their take. They’re not amused.

Write your Congress beasts (for all the good that it will do; they don’t listen to us), and patronize the good folks at Dillon Precision Industries. And to think that I almost sold my RL 550 because surplus ammo was cheaper.

If you haven’t bought a gun or three by now, shame on you! One rifle and pistol per family member, plus a shotgun or two for CQB indoors and taking gamebirds for food. NATO calibers only for the pistols and rifles, please; your source of resupply may just be a burned out UN APC.

    Charlie:

Way the hell OT, but that “lifetime, unconditional warranty” Dillon gives? They mean every word of it, and won’t even allow the customer to take the blame for his own mistakes!

I bought a -550 used about 6 years ago at a swap meet. Through my own stupidity, I broke the deprimer. Called customer service, and requested a new one, giving them my Visa number.

Nice lady on the phone stated “I don’t need that, sir, it’s under warranty.” I explained again that I had broken it, and really thought that since it was my fault, and that I wasn’t the original owner, that I should pay for it. Nope. Ain’t happening.

The next day (at 6:45 in the morning - first overnight!) Fed-Ex delivered a package containing a new deprimer and two spare pins. No charge.

Would that a few more companies offered this kind of Customer Service.

Have they thought this though? Seems to me that such a regulation would cause immense difficulties for any police station which stores weapons and ammunition. Evacaute the cop shop every time there’s an electrical storm? I Don’t think so. And don’t the BATF offices also have to store their stuff at the office? And those LEO places are all specificaly under OSHA as “workplaces”. This could get really interesting.

    Wild-Eyed Charlie & Deathknyte
You may not have to take your ammunition from a burned-out UN APC. Remember that the only thing more corrupt than a Mexican cop is a turd world UN soldier. The price might even be cheaper than your local sporting shop. That’s how the Chechens got a lot of their stuff from the Russian Army. This is what’s called situation ethics - If the Chechens do it, its probably a bad thing, but if you and I do it, it is good.

Evacuate the building everytime theres a lightning storm nearby? I work in the airforce, and our munitions troops don’t even do that, they just cease explosive ops and safe secure the weapons until the storm passes. Those kids are working on five hundred to two thousand pound bombs. dozens at a time. I’m sure these regs will make things more difficult for our ammo troops.

Speaking about my job, this is sure to make things that much more difficult for the men and women who teach soldiers, sailors, and airmen how to shoot. Our range had to close temporarily once since I’ve been at my current base in order for extensive environmental mods due to air quality. Funny, its an outdoor range, and it couldn’t meet the airquality standards. I’m pretty certain that should this pass, our range will have to close again in order to beef up its ammunition storage safety. Perhaps some lightning arrestors, or a more hardened storage system. New regs will have to written when it comes to bringing in ammo to the site. Shooting quals will have to be pushed back, (Last time I was in, I talked to a Staff Sergeant who hadn’t shot for five years, his previous bases firing range had been closed indefinitely and they were only allowing those going on deployments to shoot. The nearest firing range that could contract out to them was a good twenty miles away or so. None of the local police ranges could handle the M-16, they were all set up for pistols and shotguns. No local rifle ranges were big enough to handle the bases needs.)Basic point, this is going to make things harder not just for those of us who enjoy the art of shooting, but also for those for whom shooting is an intrinsic part of the job the perform.

I imagine that Law enforcement units would have to build armory structures seperate from the office and detention buildings. Basically, there’ll be a small building next to the station where all additional arms and ammunition will have to be stored. It will be hardened against fire and lightning, and of course, gremlins. You’ll only be allowed to carry your personal weapon and ammunition on you. Weapons may have to be cleared prior to entering the station house. Meaning that if any gremlins should give you problems while at work, I hope everyone can think fast enough to lock and load while dodging whatever trouble he may bring. Ammunition transport regs could seriously hamper the number of guns you’re allowed to have in your cruiser. Your M-4 or AR-15 may find its way back to the armory, where it will do you no good whatsoever. If your post is already having budget problems, expect more as funds are pulled to build the armory area. If your post is in the middle of a big town, expect some Eminent domain action to occur as the cops try to get some extra space for the new armory structure. “When the revolution comes” as me and my freinds would say, expect some pencilnecked asshole to try to explain to you that after your shift, you need to turn all your weapons into the armory, and go home completely unarmed. Feel free to partially disarm yourself, right into his centermass.

I’m sure they’ll also throw in a few regs to make things more of a challenge for private shooting ranges. Outdoor ranges already get closed down due to weather, indoor ranges already have a hard enough challenge staying open due to the regs on airquality and so forth. Imagine regs pertaining to keeping track of how much ammunition is onsite at any particular moment. Or regs pertaining to also making the shooting area fire resistent. “Oh my God, theres a ton of flammable paper in here! This is dangerous!”…”Umm, those are the targets sir.”

Its not hard to imagine seeing the big chain stores such as Walmart cease carrying ammunition. That may not seem like a big deal to alot of ya’ll, who are more likely to load your own, buy in bulk, or patronize a local highquality large size gunstore, but for some folks stuck way out in the boonies, walmart is really the closest place to grab ammunition. In my home town the nearest gun store is a good half hour to an hour away at the county line. Alot of people who only have one or two guns, (One for shooting injured or dangerous animals, one for some basic home defense) walmart is really the one place to go for ammo. They’re not going to drive an hour for the small amount (1000 rounds or less) that they need. Having to drive that far for ammunition means they’re going to shoot less, it means that the ammunition they have on the shelf is going to grow older and older, more corrosion, less stability, more dangerous.

Which brings us to a good point for those of here who do maintain a good amount of ammo, are you making a decent effort to expend some of your older stuff? Or do you just grab a few of the new boxes you just made or bought, while the rest of your stockpile sits there aging for God knows how long? Its good to keep your stockpile somewhat fresh, and shooting those older loads will give you a good idea as to if your stockpile is having problems with moisture or shelflife. Take a look at that brass when you crack open a box thats been in the back corner for a while. You might want to consider throwing a bag of dessicant in your ammo cans, or moving it all to a place a tad dryer and cooler.

You’re probably right, my friend, but since the press is mounted on my reloading bench, inside my home, and we have a Castle law in place, they’ll have to “take” everything I’ve reloaded before the get the press, if you take my meaning.

And I’m pretty damn good with those home loads…

I too would be thrown under the jail, the paper would say that all the neighbors said he was a good guy and had no idea he had SO MUCH AMMUNITION. To me it’s not enough.
Lucky for me the better half requires periodic ammo purchases. But the next outlay is for a Dillon 550, can’t wait!

    Hey Fuzzhead
GOA is definitely a kickass lobby, but should never forget who their friends are.

Is this compromised, or dialed in..

To sign on to the deal, the powerful gun lobby won significant concessions from Democratic negotiators in weeks of painstaking talks. Individuals with minor infractions in their pasts could petition their states to have their names removed from the federal database, and about 83,000 military veterans, put into the system by the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2000 for alleged mental health reasons, would have a chance to clean their records. The federal government would be permanently barred from charging gun buyers or sellers a fee for their background checks. In addition, faulty records such as duplicative names or expunged convictions would have to be scrubbed from the database.

OSHA can always be counted on coming up with over-the-top safety schemes.

Give a few people a room with a desk and tell them to start thinking about how to make things “safe”, and before long you will have some of the most ridiculous ideas ever thunk up.

They will even attempt to make a Rube Goldberg contraption safe if you let them.

Mandatory shutdown and evacuation of all ammunition factories during approaching thunderstorms? No display of ammunition and firearms in the same store? Involuntary strip searches of customers to make sure that they don’t have lighters or matches near ammunition?

Well, detonating ammunition is a growing concern. You remember all those people killed last year in ammunition factory explosions ignited by passing thunderstorms.

    Trust me on this one.

I do, Guido…I do. Where I work we have a warehouse attached to the store. In aforementioned warehouse reside some two thousand or so gallons of paint, assorted solvents and sundries, one forklift, a pallet jack and hand trucks.
The no smoking sign goes without saying. Remembering the chill I felt watching some dude with a death wish putting out a cigarette on a fifty gallon drum of acetone……..or try pulling some drunk off a forklift. Been there, done that.
But we had a resident, a rather fat muskrat. I keep telling people if they wouldn’t leave their goddammed pizza boxes laying around we wouldn’t have mice. But our muskrat, big fellow he was. I named him Ralph…I thought he was cute. The lady up front failed to share my affections, screaming like a banshee, splitting my head in the process, and proposed thousands of dollars worth of solutions to rid out warehouse of rodents.
My coworker Erica solved the problem on the cheap.
She brought in a stray cat…he works for free, twenty-four seven, no bennies save medical, is good at what he does, just feed him and pet him once in a while……and try not to run over him with the forklift…….

Allow me to clarify that last answer, Tsubaki Shijuro. Having once worked for a company where the “Safety Committee” members had compulsive explosive bowel movements over “potential solvent contamination” every time I used my teeth to remove the cap from my pen. (At the time I was in the packaging/shipping department, eight hundred feet, two airlock doors and SIX independent air handling systems from any solvents.)

    No.

You can’t fix stupid. I used to work at a sawmill. (Hey, I have experience in the real world, I’m not just a reporter. I’ve actually done stuff.) We had a small forklift that just about anyone who was working in the building could use, there was supposed to be some training involved but hey, that takes time. Speaking of which, this was in the late seventies (for those of you wondering). One day while I was running some forearm blanks through a shaper one of the guys I was working with jumped on the forklift and tried to get a pallet of blanks off the top of a stack. Once he had the pallet up high enough he backed out, rather quickly, and turned at the same time. Needless to say, not the smartest move he could have made. The weight of the pallet overbalanced the forklift which immediately decided to turn turtle. Hundreds of forearm blanks rained down on those of us unfortunate enough not to be on the forklift which had a protective cage on top. I was lucky enough to only have one hit me after bouncing on the floor but we had one guy get a broken collarbone.

I guess the point is there isn’t a rule out there that would have protected us. Stupidity trumps rules every time. Oh yeah, never make a rule you know won’t be enforced.
