To all of YOU!

Remember the call to send 6,000 support emails to RCT 6? Remember how the magnificent bastards out there taunted us, suggesting that we’d never make the mark, much less melt down their servers?

Well guess WHAT?

Email 20,000 came in today, from a corporal in the British Army.

That’s highly satisfying. But not quite as satisfying as this:

The bandwidth demands for the inflow of emails have become so severe that the RCT’s staff has been forced to order the end of the project for security reasons. Sgt. Deboard regretfully informs us that, after next Sunday, the address will be closed.

How do you like them apples, Jarheads?

Seriously, though, we’re glad to hear that we made it, you deserve a hundred times that many letters every single day, and we hope you don’t mind clogging up your mailbox too much. If you do, tough shit. You asked for it. ;)

And, again and most importantly: Thanks to every single one of you who took the time to be part of this. Thanks for answering the call by sending a letter, and keep in mind that nothing is keeping you from doing so in the future as well, even without an official challenge. It’s the least we can do.

So, from the Empire to all of you who were part of Operation “Emails for RCT 6″, a big OO-RAH!

Well done.

Fantastic job, Misha! I’m sure those Marines enjoyed every message!

Of course, if people reading this want to CONTINUE to support our troops, I suggest that everyone out there becomes a penpal to a soldier by becoming their “angel”.

    Just go to:
    soldiersangels.org
and sign up to be an “angel”.

I know, I know, I’ve posted this request before, but they(Soldiers Angels) are in dire need of help right now. They have requests from our troops every day, but they don’t have enough “angels” to fill those requests.
I hope you can spread the word to some of your Rotties, Misha.
I think I’ll send an email to “my” SSgt. Joe right now….

From almost throwing in the towel when they hit the 1700 mark in emails initially, all you bloggers under the auspices of Grim stuck with the plan and look how well it turned out - Faith, no small effort from a TON of people along with a little kick in the tail now and then judiciously administered, some diplomatic verbage thrown in for good measure and ‘voila!’ Great news.

The same techniques would do the Job in Iraq, but I think the towel may be heading towards the floorboards even as we speak.

I pray I’m wrong about that part.

I saw the link to “All Four Stanzas” and was moved to add this, about the unheard stanzas to “America the Beautiful” (which also bring tears to my eyes). Here they are:

    O beautiful for pilgrim feet
    Whose stern impassioned stress
    A thoroughfare for freedom beat
    Across the wilderness.

    America! America!
    God mend thine every flaw,
    Confirm thy soul in self-control,
    Thy liberty in law.

    O beautiful for heroes proved
    In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
    And mercy more than life.

    America! America!
    May God thy gold refine
    Till all success be nobleness,
    And every gain divine.

    O beautiful for patriots’ dream
    That sees beyond the years
    Thine alabaster cities gleam
    Undimmed by human tears.

    America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
    From sea to shining sea.

THIS is what we’re fighting for. God bless our men and women in the service.

what do you send in care packages?

Lots of things. Radio CIA has adopted a troop in Iraq and we’ve already sent three boxes to them. Shipped the third one today and still have another full box ready to go. Items can depend on whether they have access to electricity…some troops don’t on a regular basis. Our troop is 10 guys living in a tent with electricity and a microwave. Alot of them have microwaves and small fridges, so microwavable soups, spaghetti, ravioli, ramen noodles, mac and cheese…anything that can be cooked in a microwave.
Beef jerky is a big favorite over there. They can just stick some in their pocket and snack on it as they are on patrol.
NO PORK PRODUCTS or tobacco or alcohol. You can send chewing tobacco…but no cigs.
Hard candy is always good…they can pass it out to the Iraqi children. Sweetened drink powders are always good.
Heck we found a 12 pack of those humungus dill pickles in individual pouches at Sam’s and sent those.
Hygiene products such as deodorant, foot powder, odor eaters, razors, shaving cream, and believe it or not…they love to get things that just make things smell good. Fabreeze, fabric softener sheets, and air fresheners are always appreciated.
Sunflower seeds are also requested alot.

Magazines, Playstation and Gameboy games, and music CD’s are great for giving them something to unwind with off duty. Batteries are a big request item…mainly AA’s.
If for any reason you send something that they can’t use…they still love to get it because they can use it to barter with other troops for items they have.

Basically people should just think of what they would want to have if they had limited cooking facilities and limited entertainment options.

But most of all they love letters…..LOTS of letters.

Yep. I do a show on Monday nights. I play old time music from the 30’s, 40’s and some from the 50’s and 60’s. Big band, jazz, and show tunes and such. All the other DJ’s (M, Jackboot, Country Red, and VulcanRider) have the country, gospel, classic rock and easy listening genres sewn up so I opted for something the others didn’t play. Plus it’s all music I listened to when I was a kid. My mother is a big music buff and made sure I knew who Glenn Miller, Rogers and Hammerstein, Shirley Jones, Robert Preston and other big name musicians of that time were.

I think of my soldier…I haven’t heard from him in over a month………but with soldiers angels you can send to more than one……sometimes I just write a letter and tell them to give it to anybody they wish. I remember being in uniform, it can get goddammed lonely. That and helping vets here at home too…those in need for whatever reason. I cannot walk by a donation jar…it simply isn’t in me. Thos samll town of Dog Patch, USA is building a memorial for all vets at an elementary school a block from here. How touching it was to walk in, cough up sixty bucks, only to find out my name was going to be inscribed along with every vet ever living in this town. Some would call it a weakness…but when I see that old Marine Korean War vet smile when he sees me coming…saying, “There’s my old buddy, I knew he and his twenty bucks would be along……” Even a silent tribute…and to honor memories of men leaving me in awe at their endurance and accomplisments, and all to often very, very humbled…………

    I have done something…

I just don’t like bragging too much…and most folks wouldn’t believe me if I told ‘em.

Onna other hand…it is absolutely surprising how much you can accomplish…if you don’t give a flying shit about who gets the credit. ;O)

Seven years, seventy thousand emails, nearly five million words written and shared, mentoring, suggesting, counseling, networking, the occasional rant, hundreds of hours onna phone, lots and lots of research… Toss in a little Sun T’zu and some game theory just for flavor…

Throw enough pebbles inna pond, after awhile, alla those pebbles begin to add up to somethin’. Toss enough pebbles inna pond, after awhile, you can cross that pond without gettin’ yer feet wet. (i.e. don’t worry about what “poor little me” can do about anything. Just do something. The little things add up and make one helluva surprising difference.)

We each have something to offer to others. We each have knowledge, a skill, an ability or a talent to offer to the world. We can each touch a person, another human being, in such a way that no one else can hope to approach.

Changing the world’s kinda cool. It doesn’t take a lot of resources. All it takes is time, patience…and the will to do something.

…and don’t be surprised, if, along the way, someone comes along and gives you the credit, any-damned-way. ;O)

Most people already have the skills, talents and the ‘tools’ they need. They just need a little encouragement.

    Although…the occasional - liberal - application of a two-by-four has it’s proper place. ;O)

Caveman…you are always one of the most eloquent posters on here. Your words are always humbling and inspiring. Thank you for that.

PC (and anyone else that would be interested) here is the link to Any Soldier where you can “adopt” a troop, or simply find someone to send a care package or just simply send letters to, that might not get much from home. Most all the contacts will give a list of items that particular troop wishes for or needs just to give you an idea of what to send. Some troops have women and some don’t. The contact will state whether or not any women are members of that particular troop. Any package or letter that the contact person receives marked “Any Soldier” is given to one that hasn’t received any packages or mail, or simply divided among the soldiers in that troop. Some troops get alot of attention and providers..and some do not. You can choose from a particular branch of service or simply go through a general list and just choose those that interest you. You have to register and pick a contact and that person’s address will be sent to you by email. They do ask that you not request contact information if you do not intend to follow through.

If you include a letter with the package with your mailing address and email, plus a self addressed envelope (no postage is necessary, Military personnel do not pay postage) then your chances of hearing back from those soldiers is increased although they do caution you that you may not. Soldiers are always thankful for anything they receive, but often times are more concerned with staying alive and trying to stay in contact with family members to have time to write everyone they get mail or packages from. Plus putting your name and address in a letter inside the package is easier to keep up with since the shipping box most often gets thrown away or used for other purposes.

Oh…one more item that they love to recieve…remember all those little condiment packs that we all have stuffed in various drawers and such? Save em! We managed to stuff an entire grocery bag with ketchup, mustard, duck sauce, soy sauce, mayo, taco sauce etc. When you are on a diet of MRE’s they need all the help they can get to make them palatable. Those folks just about get into fire fights over stuff like that.

    I agree wrbones.
Many people have done what they can..and without saying a word, and it does not lessen the impact of what they did. I hope I do not come across as bragging…but I think in a case of supporting our troops, many people may not realize the options they have to be able to do something, anything, to show our troops that we care. It’s up to those who are doing something to tell others…”Hey..this is what we are doing, you should give it a try”.

Oooh, did I hurt your feewings?

I don’t have “feewings”, I found them inconvienent.

Here’s a suggestion: Go to soldiersangels.org, sign up to help a soldier, and get yourself occupied with something important, like helping our warriors.

If you do that, I will apologize for my over the top comment to you. If you don’t, then my comment stands.

In the meantime, grow some skin.
    And some balls.

I have friends in the military already and talk to them often.

BTW learn to spot sarcasam. It would make your life easier. I couldn’t care if you think I really am a taliban.

    Deathknyte:
You wouldn’t know sarcasm if it bit you in the ass.
And obviously you DO care about my”taliban” comment, otherwise you wouldn’t have brought it up a week later in an unrelated post.

I’m proud of Misha for getting so many emails sent to the Marines, and I’m going to continue to encourage people to join organizations that help our soldiers. Unlike you, many citizens don’t have “friends in the military” that they can talk to or send letters to.

For a man who has no feelings, you seem to be getting awfully angry about nothing.
Why don’t you go make yourself useful and send a package to one of your friends in harms way? Hmmmm?

    A little sarcasm, a little guilt…a little seltzer in your pants… :O)

    wrbones:

Now that was funny, and silly, and in the spirit of this post. I was TRYING to put focus on our soldiers.
Misha has been SO supportive of our fighting men and women, and I applaud him.

    Hugs to you, wrbones.

Actually, I think the taliban thing was funny. Mostly because its so unfounded. I think I will keep it. Perhaps it will draw trolls in.

There is a long way between here and being angry.
