And we can forgive you for having missed it, because none of the Usual Suspects seem to have taken notice of a terrorist state invading another nation’s sovereign territory unprovokedly:

Syrian troops on Thursday reportedly have penetrated three kilometers into Lebanese territories, taking up positions in the mountains near Yanta in east Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley.

The daily Al Mustaqbal, citing sources who confirmed the cross-border penetration, did not say when the procedure in the Fahs Hill overlooking Deir al-Ashaer in the Rashaya province took place.

The sources said Syrian troops, backed by bulldozers, were fortifying positions “in more than one area” along the Lebanese border, erecting earth mounds and digging “hundreds” of trenches and individual bunkers.

So what was that about “the road to peace going through Damascus”, House Hijab Pelosi?

Where are the vaunted U.N. and their wonderful Smurfs? Oh, they’re right on it, we assure you:

So I asked Michael Young, opinion page editor at Beirut’s Daily Star, if the story was bogus.

“It is true,” he said, “but the problem is that the 3 kilometers are in isolated areas, so that it isn’t making headlines. However, the UN will be discussing border issues this week, I think, and that will be brought up. The Syrians are ratcheting up the pressure, but with the attack against UN troops in the south, they are, as one UN official put it, playing with fire.”

Only if the U.N. are planning on setting their worthless resolutions and “notes of concern” alight before throwing them at a hysterically laughing Assad.

Anyway, where are the headlines? Surely, if Israel were to advance two miles into Syria and fortify their positions, there’d be no end to the coverage by now, right? Where are the expressions of outrage from our Administration at this unprovoked act of war, or would such a thing endanger the vital appeasement work of the Baker Chamberlain Iraq Sudetenland Study Group?

*Chirp!*

*Chirp!*

Would somebody tell those crickets to shut up, please?

Oh, and this certainly bears mentioning too, sorry for having left it out of the original post:

Meanwhile, the Syrian government is evacuating its citizens from Lebanon in advance of…something they expect to happen after July 15, 2007.

It’s going to be an interesting summer.

Would that be the same July 15th, 2007 that I’ve got on my calendar? The one that is five frackin’ days away from now?

Oh, but no need to be alarmed or act rashly, no need at all. After all, Jim Baker and House Screecher Lugosi both assure us that Pencilneck Assad is a valuable partner for peace, so let’s not rock the boat, shall we?

    History repeats!!

This is what you get when you snuggle up to tyrants:

Chamberlain talks with Hitler, talks about peace in our time, Hitler rolls into Poland…..
Henry Kissinger meets with Le Duc Tho in the Paris Peace Accords gets awarded the Nobel Prize, North Vietnam then rolls into Saigon…
Pelosi goes to Damascus and talks about the road to peace: Syria rolls into Lebanon

A friend of mine had WWII Mauser and I believe what must have been the ammo that was issued with the rifle. Most of the rounds would fire without problem, but every tenth or fifteenth round would hang. You’d squeeze the trigger and it would go click, then you started counting. It would usually go of when you got to four, but it seemed forever.

Lots of bruised shoulders for the person that started to relax at three, and enjoyment by all at the look on their face when the butt jumped back at them. (Everyone was warned prior to being allowed to shoot.)

    SoCalOilMan:

That batch failed, to be used for practice only. I have shot WWII 8mm Mauser that was 100%. The (probable) difference - mine came from sealed cans.

Obviously, if you have some crappy old Soviet Block ammo that has corroded, been soaked in sea water, or (as I have seen more than once) OILED (brrrrrr1), don’t trust it.

Military ammo, usually, can be trusted for years if stored in it’s original container. Test it and find out. Of course, after you unseal it to test, it should only be trusted for three or four years.

One extreme case - a friend of mine inherited a civil war era rifle from his g-grandfather. He cocked it, pulled the trigger, and was rewarded with an extremely loud boom and cloud of grey smoke. Yes, an “unloaded” gun.

    In his basement.

Needless to say, his Mother was somewhat put off by this (pissed like unto homicide was closer to the fact).

Totally OT but too good not to post:

SAN DIEGO — An investigating officer has recommended dismissing murder charges against a U.S. Marine accused in the slayings of three Iraqi men in a squad action that killed 24 civilians in the town of Haditha, according to a report.

The government’s theory that Lance Cpl. Justin L. Sharratt had executed the three men was “incredible” and relied on contradictory statements by Iraqis, Lt. Col. Paul Ware said in the report, released Tuesday by Sharratt’s defense attorneys.

“To believe the government version of facts is to disregard clear and convincing evidence to the contrary, and sets a dangerous precedent that, in my opinion, may encourage others to bear false witness against Marines as a tactic to erode public support of the Marine Corps and mission in Iraq,” Ware wrote.

Also expect Iran to sabre rattle to try and distract the US. Any Republican guard divisions that start moving towards Iraq should be treated as a threat and clobbered. All hell is going to break loose so lets get ready. Sadly I think our little British garrison in southern Iraq could be in for a lot of trouble.

Sorry to go OT, but I need advice. I have been trying to find a KAHR 380 semi-automatic so I can qualify for concealed carry. Seems they are hot right now and hard to find. Local dealer recommends Bersa 380 BLDLX. Can anyone advise re this?

My situation is: 64-4/5 years widow living alone (except for Baby (Yorkie), have had breast cancer and ano-rectal cancer, 5′4″, 107 lbs. Advice please.

    Thanks much.

If you can’t get a Kahr, or a Keltec, consider a revolver.

Maybe a S&W ( or Taurus ) Model 66 revolver, loaded with .38 special instead of .357 Mag.

God bless you and give you healing, [Non]ignorant Mensan. I like the Bersas I’ve seen and handled, but haven’t owned one, so can’t attest to longterm qualities. May I suggest that you check out a range or two to see what they may have available to try out, either as a loaner or just demo. Most shooting enthusiasts want you to be safe and comfortable in the shooting world, so I’d be willing to bet the guys at the range or your concealed carry instructor would be helpful. You should try out a few, like Makharovs (kinda like a Ruski Walther ppk–not .380 unless converted or specially produced for western markets) or something in .40 cal. I read somewhere that .40 cal is the favorite of female cops–good stopping power, mild recoil. Though perhaps not as concealable, depending on your level of firearms expertise, you may be best served by a revolver. My wife is 5′ petite and fell in love with a stainless steel Ruger SP101 chambered for .357 magnum, but loaded with .38 special, loaned to her during her concealed carry class by the instructor. Finally, you can get more help by going to the Imperial Firearms Advisor’s site, registering and reading/posting in their forums–i.e., not in open blog comments. He doesn’t have that title for nothing! Best of luck and blessings to you–let us know what you get.

    Ignorant Mensan:

While not quite as blount as brother Kristopher about it, I am inclined to agree about the Bersa. The salesman, in this case, is not a gun person, just someone trying to make a sale, IMHO.

I assume that price must at least be some consideration. If you can find one of the Makarov’s, they are usually excellent (since they are copies of a Walther PP / PPK, I would expect them to be.) There are several of the Hungarian, Polish and Check variations on the market of late, and Baikal (Russian Commecial arms factory) has a great one on the market. All run about $180 - $250. Avoid the Bulgarian ones, as quality control was, how do I put this, somewhat erratic. (The Baikal, BTW, is also available in .380.) CorBon has a great hollow point cartridge in 9×18, but it is too expensive to qualify with. The cheap stuff will be good enough for practice, but once a year or so shoot up the carry ammo and put in a new batch.

The Keltec has a great reputation as well, but I do not have personal experience with them. The Kahr 9mm is excellent, but in 9mm will have a bit more recoil and be more expensive. The Star “FireStar” is my personal favorite in pistols this size, but it is heavy and is single action only.

Find a dedicated Firearms Store, not the local pawn shop / Wally world / etc. The sales people will be much more knowlegable.

If this was a gun store recommending the Bersa, look for a new store, please.

Meanwhile, you are certainly not naked before your enemies with the Charter.

If there are any questions that I could assist with, I am more than willing to do what I can.

I agree that many of the East Euro PPK/s wannabees are excellent. The Bulgars are garbage.

Depending on budget, I would recommend, what I carry: Walther PPK/s in 32 ACP or a little Colt Pony in 380 ACP. Both are pricey. Both are #2(back-up) guns. My primary is an old Charters Arms 2″ 44spl Bulldog.

Never let anyone convince you that a 25ACP is anything other than a paperweight. I own an old Raven that shoots fine…..probably will kill a chipmunk if I stuffed it in his ear. 380 is bare minimum in my opinion….32 is weak. A compact 9mm would be better.

The sad part is (and I know you guys are going to lynch me) I have a range / gun shop RIGHT ACCROSS THE STREET..

Yep its a mere 1 minute walk to the range and ive never shot at it… Firstly its quite expensive and in israel you can only shoot at the range with a instructor.. plus they only have shity guns to rent (jericho etc.)

    (Non)Ignorant Mensan:
As a Keltec PF-9 owner, I can testify that it is extremely well suited to concealed carry — as I carry it nearly all the time, and I ain’t exactly a big guy :) 7-round single-stack mag, so it’s nice and thin. Only thing is it’s got a fairly sharp recoil due to its small size and low weight. It’s a DAO, which (as I understand it) makes it safer for chambered carry …but some people hate DAOs, so that’s your call. The final factor for me was price: the PF-9 was exactly what I wanted (size, caliber) and for less than $280 before tax it was unbeatable.

Should come standard with one magazine, one magazine extension foot (to make gripping it easier, for your pinky to hook on — yes, it’s that small!), a pretty rudimentary trigger lock, and manual. If you go for a second mag and want a second mag foot, you might have to call Keltec directly to order it; last I looked (about 2 months ago) the PF-9 magazine foot wasn’t in the online store.

I’ve put north of 500 rounds through it since buying it and I’ve only had 4 malfunctions — all feed problems and all fairly recently, most likely due to spring fatigue in magazines (cause I keeps em loaded all the time — few things as useless as an unloaded gun). I don’t think Wolff makes any compatible replacement mag springs yet :/ Overall, I certainly don’t regret buying it, as it’s a dream to carry. Best of all, and probably most relevant for you: my wife has no problem handling it! She ain’t fond of the sharpness of the recoil, but she has said that she feels confident enough with it that if she had to put it to use she could. And, FWIW, my next carry gun acquisition will be a Sig 229 — love that SA/DA :)

    Hope that helps :)

As to the topic, it’s not surprising. The be-bearded freaks figure that the writing on the wall is for an American retreat from Iraq. This, they figure, will lead to a greater retreat from the middle east.

Now, the thought rattles through tiny minds, is the time to position for dominance once the Americans are out of the way. And if we have a good position to crush the Jews when the time comes (A thought never far from from the islamic “mind”), so much the better!

    (Non)Ignorant Mensan.

On the subject of the Kel-Tec. Wonderful gun, but, as has been pointed out, rather lively to fire. (I’ve put a couple thousand rounds through a P-11, ran just fine, but you do have to deal with the break-in period.)

Kahr 380, I haven’t fondled one of the Kahrs in .380, I don’t know if it is a locked breech or not. If it is not, you will actually have less felt recoil from the 9mm. (Assuming you are looking at steel framed guns.)

An interesting piece on the surplus market right now is the CZ-82. This is in 9×18 Makarov, (which caliber does have some interesting self defense loads available beside the Cor-Bon, Speer Gold Dots, for example), and is available in the “under $300″ territory.

We’ve sold several of them recently, and, while the appearance has varied, all of them have been good guns mechanically. (Consider adding a Hogue monogrip to it, small size, trimmed across the back.)

Very comfortable shooters, decently accurate, with a 12 round magazine. (They come with two.)

Essentially the same gun as a CZ-83, except that the latter is in .380.

Oh dear–what have I gotten myself into!

Its alright. We have all the guns, so there is little to worry about. I second cmblake6 in that the KelTec P3AT is a nice pocket gun and is a very good deal. It is only good for about 15 feet though, any shots further than that are prayers. If you need a gun to stick in a goblin’s face that can be concealed in a back pocket, the P3AT is a good choice.
