From alert reader dragineez, we learn that the Borders stores in the UK are busy waging war on “racist” comic books:

LONDON - Borders is removing “Tintin in the Congo” from the children’s section of its British stores, after a customer complained the comic work was racist, the company said Thursday.

David Enright, a London-based human-rights lawyer, was shopping at Borders with his family when he came upon the book, first published in 1931, and opened it to find what he characterized as racist abuse.

“The material suggests to (children) that Africans are subhuman, that they are imbeciles, that they’re half savage,” Enright said in a telephone interview.

Now, we don’t know how much our dear readers are familiar with the adventures of Tintin, but he was (is) quite the phenomenon on the other side of the Pond, so let’s give you a very brief synopsis: Tintin and his trusty canine sidekick, Snowy, go to the Congo where a decidedly Caucasian villain in cahoots with Al Capone tries to whack him in numerous ways, among others trying to convince the local primitive villagers (remember, this is pre-WWII colonial times before all of Africa got enlightened and transformed their nations into wonderful, dystopian turd world Marxist shitholes) to off him by using their superstition against them. In the end, Tintin turns the tables on the Caucasian villain and he ends up being eaten by a bloody great croc.

In other words, the savage, primitive natives are what those of us with a brain refer to as a “plot device”, not to mention that the portrayal of them as superstitious and primitive is, by and large, quite historically accurate for the time period in which the story takes place.

But we wouldn’t expect a “human-rights lawyer” to be familiar with a subject like history, much less basic literary skills. As a matter of fact, we’re surprised that the cluefucked cretin even knows how to use a phone.

“My black wife, who actually comes from Africa originally, is sitting there with my boys and I’m about to hand this book to them…. What message am I sending to them? That my wife is a monkey, that they are monkeys?”

We weren’t aware that you found your wife in a village of the Congo back in 1930, but even if it’s so, we assume that the intervening 77 years have done much to change her tribal ways. Much as is the case with everybody else not living in a mud hut in the jungle, regardless of skin color.

But we’re all about being helpful, so here’s a suggestion: Teach your children history. Tell them about how the world used to look as opposed to how it looks now, teach them about the wonders of civilization, how intelligence isn’t dependent on skin color, that indeed there are numerous white people alive today that would make the cannibals of yore look like paragons of humanity. In other words: BE A FUCKING PARENT, YOU IMBECILIC NUMBSKULLED FUCKHEAD.

Like it or not, be it accurate or not, people living 77 years ago didn’t see the world the way we do today, mostly because the world that we know today didn’t exist 77 years ago. Imagine that. Such a concept, no? Now, obviously, we can pretend that the bits of the past that we don’t find politically correct never happened, but that won’t make them go away. More importantly, it will leave us wide open to making the same mistakes again since we will have been made to forget that we made them all before and what the consequences were.

History is, in the same way that the cerebral activity of leftard, politically correct cocknozzles isn’t.

The other, broader point here is, of course, that censorship is a Bad Thing™ no matter what your intentions are.

Here’s a radical and innovative idea for you and morons like you: If you don’t like a book, don’t fucking buy it. Amazing how us Right Wing Death Beasts always seem to come up with the most marvelously simple solutions to seemingly impossible problems, isn’t it? It’s almost as if we know something that you don’t, such as, I don’t know, maybe history, for example? Wonder why that is?

I get everlovingly sick and benightedly tired of blowhards screaming “censor this” and “censor that” because they don’t happen to agree with something that they yet, for some inexplicable reason, found it in themselves to plop down the money for and read. It’s like those tee-totaling prudes howling about Pay Per View pr0n on late night TV. If you find it so gottdamm offensive (and, for the record, I do too), then why in the name of Shaitan’s Scrotal Hair are you fucking subscribing to it, you fuckwitted, festering pustules on the butt of mankind?

There are a lot of things that I’d just as soon never have to hear of again but, unlike you meddling, mewling muttfuckers, I do realize that it doesn’t give me the right to deny it to anybody else, nor do I even want to.

So butt the fuck out, you censoring snotwits, I’m tired of you sticking your noses where they don’t belong. I’m tired of listening to your self-righteous pontifications about what everybody else ought and, much more, ought not to read/watch/listen to, and that makes me irritable. Very irritable. Homicidally irritable, if you get my drift.

If you don’t, I suggest that you devote some time to it because, trust me, it is in your own best interest to do so.

You wouldn’t like me if you were to manage to push me over the line. You wouldn’t like me at all.

Fuckheads.

Misha, they wouldn’t like me, push or no push.

I remember receiving a publication back in the early sixties that printed the Tintin/Snowy adventures in serialized form and I couldn’t wait for the next issue to see what happened.

I’m sure he just “happened” to open the book and become “offended” by its content. Especially if he grew up in England…I find it hard to believe that an english kid never ran across Tintin. I was a yankee kid and I ran across the stories. No, this smacks of a planned cultural attack by the usual suspects.

Cross “Borders” off my list of stores to shop at. One guy complains and they start pulling books. I’ll bet if I made a similar complaint about “Heathers Two Mommies” that they would pull those books as well…right?

Welcome the End Times, as it will be the end of this type of BS!

Wasn’t it Ray Bradbury that first warned us about this?

“Colored people don’t like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don’t feel good about Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Burn it. Someone’s written a book linking cigarette smoking and lung cancer? The cigarette manufacturers are complaining? Burn the book.” - from Fahrenheit 451 (from memory, probably imperfect)

Sounds to me like the Brit Borders managers need to do some remedial reading of their own. And if Enright wants to call himself a “human rights lawyer,” how’s about he starts fighting for the rights of his own countrymen to defend themselves against criminal yobs without fear of being sent to prison themselves? I never get this stupid crap of trying to ban literature, because it portrays some ethnicity. It is invariably wrong-headed. Guess no one noticed that Little Black Sambo was really clever and got lots of butter for his pancakes. Little redneck me thought he was kinda heroic–jeez, I loved pancakes with lots of butter, too. Uncle Remus was kind and wise and the dialect they were written in is still a pretty damn good primer on what has become a sort of familiar or emphatic voice in English. Not only that, but your wits must surely be sharper and happier than they would have been had you not met Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit. They are as rich psycholocical characters as you’ll find in just about any short story, no matter how “high brow.” Tin Tin isn’t as good, from my recollection, but it’s still decent, amusing lit for young readers–they can learn, at the least, what stereo-types are all about, for better and worse. So how stupid does one have to be to ban such worthy art–too stupid to be allowed to continue stealing air in my book. Rope, tree, book banners, expedited assembly needed!

Literature, like art, rises above being mere ’stories’ because of its ability to portray its subject and evoke an undeniably viseral response in the reader. It is this response, whether good or bad, that transforms a line such as “He looked at her chest in the half-lit room.” to “The moonlight flowed from the open curtain, like a river, spilling across her chest. The gracious and gentle curves of her breasts glowed with a luminous intensity that was in stark contrast to the rest of her body, clad only in the sheet and the darkness that filled the rest of the room.”

Undoubtedly, the latter is more likely to provoke an emotional response than the former, and while I doubt any in the Empire would be offended, we wouldn’t have to look to far to find someone who feels that such a passage conveys the wrong message, either by objectification, suggestiveness, or some other reason.

We can’t let these killjoys win.

Not to be a “racist” here, but based on the savagery that is devouring that part of the world today I am hard pressed to find much redeeming about the “dark continent”. Rwanda, Darfur, Somalia, Nigeria, Congo-Kinshasa…..the natives are killing themselves off at a record pace.

In this special issue, Vice President George Bush lets Tintin launch a nuke from a US warship off the Lebanese coast. All because the Arab savages killed his dog, Snowy (no doubt a racist white beast). Any African that is subhuman, an imbecile, or half (or more) savage is that way not because of skin color, but because their culture sucks. The can choose not to be subhuman, imbecilic, or any degree of savage. But many don’t. The same goes for Americans, Europeans, Asians, or whatever people would be if they were from Antarctica. Choices, not biology.

Yet he is the one actually banning books, while on my bookshelf I have Mao’s little red book, “Das Kapital”, “The Communist Manifesto”, and “Mein Kampf” (as well as some delightful little pieces of propaganda written by the old USSR, such as “American Youth Today”, a very “funny” book about the hippy movement). Not only do I not scream about banning books I don’t agree with, I actually own, have read, and learned from them. Maybe this douche should try the same.

Yeah, they need to take some of the PC morons behind its planning and haul them over an acre or three of broken glass and rusty nails, liberally scattered with dogshit.

I miss my school days, when my RE (Religious Education, pre-Islam arse-kissing days) teacher would cheerfully explain how everyone but the English were shite, but anyone who came to England to be English (rather than bringing the Turd World with them) was pretty decent too and definitely smarter than the common ruck. Follow that with some stories about interesting people he killed during the Second World War and we were fucking rapt….. And a little terrified, definitely respectful and a little less ignorant.

I remember reading TinTin as a child - good memories. If this lawyer doesn’t want his family to read it, then all he has to do is not buy the book. Of course, he doesn’t want anyone to read it either. An interesting commentary on tolerant liberalism.
My household had cable once, until our oldest daughter figured out how to get the full range of channels. My wife found her watching the Playboy channel at 2AM. Did we protest to Cox that such immoral programming was available? No, we got rid of cable TV instead (along with a hasty birds/bees talk and punishment). But that’s the intolerant conservative in me.

Is it okay to talk about various forms of censorship (including non-PC)?
Censorship is a hot-button topic for me.

I think censorship from both sides of the aisle is wrong. The PC stuff is generally stupid (Tom Sawyer is such a classic). And Misha is right–if something really is offensive, explain to your kids what is wrong with it. They would probably be a way better way to get a better grip on the world than if everything were sanitized. The list of books banned in various schools is frightening: “A Seperate Peace?” I violently disagree with the banning of certain science books from classrooms. Almost everybody is offended by something–there would be nothing to read!

I’m amazed they caved in like that–I wonder if it was that store manager or the whole British chain. I am almost positive that would not happen in the US with Borders. I will check with my connection the next time I see them. The thing they did which is kind of spineless was to pull Salman Rushdie’s book after the death threat. But fear of violence is more understandable than one person being upset with one book.

Borders carries a lot of right-wing books (which is as it should be). Someone will come in and start screeching censorship because the book they want isn’t there. And the reason will be that the book doesn’t sell. (You can special-order practically anything.)

I checked out rapturealert.com (so not me) and somehow ended up on this extreme site where they want to ban the p0rn channel(s?) in hotels. Some people commented that they could just not pay for it and not have any p0rn (my approach). But someone had published that there was a high proportion of “GOOD CHRISTIAN MEN” who were addicted to p0rn and then started talking about addiction treatment. I guess it’s the fault of the p0rn, not the person, although I guess it’s good they aren’t torturing the men for being into p0rn. [NOTE: I think this is not representative of most Christians, and I am NOT ragging on Christianity.] I just thought it was interesting. It is another form of attempted censorship. (I forgot about not using certain words–Yikes)

Maybe I should sue my web provider for my internet addiction?

What about neo-Nazi literature? Just because something offends me doesn’t mean it should be banned. But you can make a case for banning literature if it could cause violence, but then a really twisted person could be inspired to violence from anything. I guess I would favor of not banning it, but observing who it went to. I think that’s legit–Timothy McVeigh had white supremacist leanings. I think people that want to start a race war could well be considered a threat to public safety and worthy of observation. That reminds me I should read “The Turner Diaries” (the blueprint for a race war that starts out with the bombing of a large federal building-TM’s inspiration)–carried at Borders! I’m sure there are people that want to ban that. I think it should be kept around to learn about evil, like “Mein Kampf.”

Was it hypocritical of me to try to get YouTube to pull the neo-Nazi videos on AIPAC? Was that attempted censorship on my part? (That would never occur to me for things I just disagree with politically–like Ann.)

Memo to me, buy some more banned books. I don’t have kids yet, but someday I will. Gotta have something lying around for them to read.

Mien Kampf is a hoot, They should carry that one in the comedy section. Maybe a picture of ole adolph striking the “thinkers’ pose on the toilet.

Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer were great books when I was growing up. Funny, some white kid goes to all that trouble to try and free a slave, and they ban the book because somebody said the unholy N word. Makes me wonder if the people who want to ban it even read the damned thing. I think they just want to ban the book because it potrays southerners as something other then utterly retarded racist rednecks. Oh, and teachers, Cairo Il is not pronounced the same way as Cairo egypt.

So yeah, if a book could potentially cause violence, and that could theoretically justify banning it, when are the bookstores going to start banning the koran and the bible? Better pull my beatles songs off my computer, Helter Skelter did motivate Charles Manson to send out his girlfreinds on a slaying spree. Marylin Manson? Hasta La Vista. Star Trek promotes hatred of blacks through the hatred of the Klingons, Star Wars features one big very pissed off scary black guy ( who follows one crazy old white coot, and winds up being just a scuzzy old scared white guy on the inside.) From what I hear, Hitler was a fan of Wagners music, better toss that stuff. Fight Club, toss that out before it makes me violent. All my war movies, gone. TV would be have to be chucked out the window, (No big loss) kill the internet, (big loss). Get rid of my American flag, (They promote nationalism, after all, the whole reason WW1 and 2 happened,) Confederate flag (Of course) USAF flag, (We can kill more people in an eight hour shift, then the marines can kill all day) Ky state flag (former slave holding state. State pride and states rights was the reason the Civil war happened, if not that, slavery. Either way better play it safe.) MIA POW flag, (brutal depiction of torture and confinement on it. A look, that guards holding a gun, ban it!!!)

We crazy white wing nuts are supposed to be the fascists, right? Yet somehow when I run the math I keep realizing that if I lived in a left wing country, I’d have no books, no guns, no music, no flags, no movies other then “An Inconvenient Truth” nothing made in a third world country, and nothing that produces undue amounts of carbon during its manufacture or use (Oh, there goes the oven and the microwave!) What the hell would I have left? It would be like living in a shoebox apartment in the USSR! (Now there were a group of people who were decidely unfascist and environmentally frendly, umm wait…)

To be fair chaps, the Tintin book in question hasn’t been withdrawn from sale: It’s just been moved to the adult section so that parents have the choice of viewing or purchasing. The general response to the outburst from the Commission for Racial Equality has been along the lines of “Get your shit together, will you” from both public and media alike.

The response from Borders has been pretty much read as “There’s your concession, now fuck off.” The CRE are just about the only ones moaning about it, aside from the usual ‘right on’ leftie crowd who most people ignore, being the bunch of insufferable twats they usually are.

And unfortunately, they know that there are too many people in the black community who won’t have enough brains in their head to think for themselves and look at the ‘offending’ book, read it and come to their own conclusion on whether its actually offensive or not. PC asks:

Was it hypocritical of me to try to get YouTube to pull the neo-Nazi videos on AIPAC? Was that attempted censorship on my part? (That would never occur to me for things I just disagree with politically–like Ann.)

Yes, it was hypocritical of you to do that if you support the First Amendment. It was within the right of the individual (if they were in the US) to express their beliefs, and it’s well within your right to disagree, but not to remove their writings because you don’t like them. As for inciting violence, there’s no measure to determine whether that would be the case for ANYTHING written, drawn, published or discussed. Therefore, that standard, in it’s own right, is censorship. Take for example “The Satanic Verses” (not Rushdie’s only work, but you might think so seeing how it’s the only one mentioned) or the cartoon drawing of Mohammed (may bees pee upon him). Both incited multiple counts of violence and threats against the authors, but should that have prevented the publication? I think not.

Also, let’s look at defaming the flag. Should that be protected by the First? I personally think so. You have a beef with the US and want to burn the Flag, go for it. But, remember, I also believe that’s it’s within my right of free speech to deliver the appropriate response you might expect from a 6 foot+/230 pound former military Special Operations type person. Free speech is free speech, right? And if I wholly believe that my version of it is to kick your ass up between your shoulder blades for burning my flag, who’s to say I’m incorrect?

    Hey guys,

The first sentence in my post was that the PC banning of books was stupid, but I think it’s way off base to think that only the moonbats are banning books. Here’s a few examples out of many.

Is it the moonbats wanting to censor Harry Potter, because it promotes satanism? That one isn’t very effective: the book that’s coming out imminently will be the best-selling book ever.

Is it moonbats going through the SF library and slicing up hundred of books on homosexuality? many of which are irreplacable

I’ve never heard of moonbats having a ceremony of burning of books and cds that they find offensive, like some church did. well within their rights, but friggin creepy. reminds me of Nazi Germany (the event is pictured on the American Library Association’s web page for burning books)

The Savannah Morning News reported in November 1999 that a teacher at the Windsor Forest High School required seniors to obtain permission slips before they could read Hamlet, Macbeth, or King Lear. The teacher’s school board had pulled the books from class reading lists, citing “adult language” and references to sex and violence. (That would just be so shocking to 17 and 18 year olds.)

(I’m doing things right with the italics, don’t know why they hate me.)

    ———-
This is not relevant to the US, but the Bible is banned in so many places in the world, regrettably.

It’s not just the moonbats that are on the censorship train, but it’s clearly the left that has institutionalized it. Schools and old media are the main places where this happens, and its usually done in such a quiet, subtle (underhanded and deceitful) manner that it doesn’t get noticed by those who aren’t paying careful attention. Of course, old media won’t publicize censorship unless it’s coming from another camp, so you won’t hear such stories on CNN, the Big Three, the NYT, the LAT, or the WaPo.

The incident in 1999 that you mentioned illustrates my point. There are occasionally incidents where supposedly conservative people will go to an extreme with censorship, but those are the exceptions to the rule. You have to go back to a certain day on a certain year. We get new examples of censorship by the left every single day.

Another difference is what is being censored. From the right, it tends to be sexually explicit material that is censored. From the left, it tends to be ideas and dissent from politically correct ideology that get censored.

There are a multitude of examples in history that make a strong case that the suppression of ideas is far more destructive to societies and their liberty than the suppression of sexually explicit material. No society has ever become a nation of slaves just because they didn’t have easy access to pictures of naked ladies.

Is it moonbats going through the SF library and slicing up hundred of books on homosexuality? many of which are irreplacable

There’s a very simply way to stop those people. Hello, security, that ding-a-ling is ripping up city property. Take his or her ass away while we figure out how much to fine his or her ass.

Shakes head. Hey, if they want to burn something, they can go ahead if it was their own property, they’re only burning up their own money. Now, if this was being supported by some government entity than that’s a different matter. Hello, is there a judge available?

The Savannah Morning News reported in November 1999 that a teacher at the Windsor Forest High School required seniors to obtain permission slips before they could read Hamlet, Macbeth, or King Lear. The teacher’s school board had pulled the books from class reading lists, citing “adult language” and references to sex and violence. (That would just be so shocking to 17 and 18 year olds.)

Shakes head again. I laugh at those idiots. It’s Shakespeare for goodness sakes. What’s next, going through the bard’s books to see which of his words need to be made more PC or just removed? I hope someone down there have shown them how much of a bunch of smegheads they’re being over this. Also, it might backfire, especially among males. Tommy: What, sex and violence? Give me one of those permission slips. Remember, the bard is suppose to be boring to teenagers. ;)

(I’m doing things right with the italics, don’t know why they hate me.)

    ———-

This is not relevant to the US, but the Bible is banned in so many places in the world, regrettably.

And how many of these are controlled by muslims? Just asking.

In general, I agree with you.

The school stuff cuts both ways. There is the widespread of censorship of things on ethnic and other PC grounds (and I did make a couple of negative comments about that). But there is also conservative censorship in schools, too. From what I have read in the past, I think it is much more widespread than the odd one here and there. I just didn’t take a long time to do a thorough job of background research. I think a lot depends on what part of the country you are in. I will concede that PC censhorship is probably the one that is more widespread and being exposed to various ideas is extremely important.

Outside of school, what ideas and dissent get censored? I’m not hounding you–I’m honestly curious and hope you will post on that. Except for some academic social sciences departments and blocks of college students, I don’t see it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there (which was kind of your point). I would say that there has been a conservative administration for years (you would probably say they’re not really conservative), and we had a Republican congress for several years. They’ve been very powerful, so that would make me wonder if they would have had a squelching effect on attempted censorship. (speaking of censorship, classifying publicly available documents back to the Nixon era is kind of draconian.) The main intellectual think tanks are all conservative.

I hope you will have time to post. I’m very curious.

    >But there is also conservative censorship in schools, too.

True. But those are incidents. Leftist censorship in school is policy. There’s an important difference between incidents of censorship and a policy of censorship. That’s part of what I mean when I say that the left has institutionalized censorship.

    >Outside of school, what ideas and dissent get censored?

Let’s consider just a few of the things that are missing from coverage by the mainstream media. Any discussion at all of the principles of liberty. Dissent against junk science/trendy environmental causes such as global warming, against institutionalized racism such as Affirmative Action and quotas, against the socialization of the United States. The facts about how gun control never has and never will deter criminals, but that gun ownership saves lives and property on a daily basis. I could continue, but that would just make my post really, really long, and you should get the general idea. Any coverage of those things is so minute as to make it statistically irrelevant.

Also, what is very difficult to find on TV, even if you have the biggest cable TV package available? Programs promoting high standards of morality and behavior in general, programs promoting the principles of liberty on which this nation was founded, programs depicting conservative white Christians in anything close to a positive light.

What is very easy to find on TV, even if you only have a broken rabbit-ear antenna on top of the TV bringing in local channels with bad reception? Programs glamorizing immorality, programs mocking conservative white Christians, programs normalizing collectivist ideology. I can hear swearing on TV any time I want, but I have to wait a long time and search high and low to find something that would actually refine and edify my family.

    >Except for some academic social sciences departments and blocks of college students

Take a trip over to the College of Humanities for a little while. You’ll come back singing the Soviet anthem, and reading quotes from Chairman Mao.

    >I don’t see it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there (which was kind of your point).

Yes, that’s the point. It has become so institutionalized and so mainstream, that most people don’t even notice it. It’s much easier to notice something that is there than something that isn’t there. Especially when it hasn’t been there for a long, long time. We get the illusion of the absence of certain topics being normal. Then, when those crazy conservatives start talking about it, they get called extremists.

    >I would say that there has been a conservative administration for years (you would probably say they’re not really conservative)

Not in the least. They’re Liberal Lite.
And they don’t have control over what’s happening in schools or in the media.

    >The main intellectual think tanks are all conservative.

Ah, true. I don’t think that private think tanks really have anything to do with censorship, but it’s a good point to keep in mind. The main intellectual think tanks tend to be more conservative.

I really don’t care about censorship on TV. TV stations are private businesses, and they have the inalienable right to do what they want with their businesses. I know what the “Power” button on the remote is for. There is absolutely nothing at all compelling me physically to watch TV.

But when meddling PC politicians from either of the two liberal parties start telling me what I can or can’t read, or what I can or can’t say, or what I can or can’t think, or what I can or can’t write, sorry, that’s when the guns come out. It may have been different in an earlier time, but in the United States right now, it’s almost exclusively the left that is trying to dictate those things.

A variety of things. What I saw were books by Sean Hannity, Larry Elder, Thomas Sowell, Milton Friedman, John Stuart Mill, F.A. Hayek, and I can’t remember what else. Oh, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were being stomped on.

Oh, don’t forget Tipper Gore’s crusade against music a while back! Talk about Nazi-like behavior…

    >I’ve been around so many campuses–honestly I had never heard of that at a university.

Like I said, head on over to the College of Humanities. That’s where you get most of the kooks that aren’t in Social Sciences. If you ever meet somebody that is doing a double major of English and philosophy, political science, or history, run!!!

Sometimes I wish I had gone into a science or math field instead of literature…

Anyway, the most intellectually open and stimulating campus I have ever been on or had any experience with is Brigham Young University, a VERY conservative Christian school. The more secular/liberal the campus, the less tolerance there always seems to be for anything that isn’t part of the usual talking points.

Fortunately for me, my main focus of research is almost completely ignored by other scholars, and isn’t usually sucked into the politicization of everything. I’ll never be famous, but on the other hand, people will leave me alone!

Thank you for a lengthy post! I don’t totally agree with you on everything (surprise!), but I now have a much better grip on these issues (and saved your posts). A few things I disagree with

    –global warming as junk science
Someone could sit there with a gun to my head and be threatening to kill me, and I would still maintain that the global warming theory is considered the premier work in the field right now by scientists. That could change, but for the moment it really is. There is always dissension when something new comes up. But you are right, there isn’t a lot discussed about the dissension.

    –Brigham Young U
is Mormon! not Christian (or is there considered to be some overlap in the religions I am unaware of?)

    –affirmative action
It seems like I do read about aa issues periodically. Within a couple minutes I was able to find a NYT article about how they are thinking of not including race on the 2010 census, accompanied by a discussion of race and policies.

    ——
That’s funny–I’m the reverse. I was wishing I had done a poly sci/history major. I only got to take a couple classes. My poly sci teacher gave lefty lectures and conservative readings, but that was 25 years ago. Clausewitz is a faint memory.

I guess I should go check out the humanities where I’m at.

I think if books had been burned where I was at, I would have heard about it. God, that’s going to freak me out all night for happening at a university. For that to happen at a campus is really chilling. The campus where that evil woman taught?

Tipper Gore–Nazi is a fair description–We just loathed her.

Okay, I’ll give you some time on global warming. It might take until the popular trend switches back to being hysterical about global cooling, but you’ll come around. :)

    >is Mormon! not Christian (or is there considered to be some overlap in the religions I am unaware of?)

Well, I’m Mormon, and I am definitely Christian. The idea that Mormons aren’t Christians is
    a) a misconception, and
    b) a lie spewed out by anti-Mormon bigots.
    “Mormon” is just a nickname.

    >–affirmative action

That would be great if they finally got rid of “race” on the census and everything else. I always just put “human” when forms ask for my “race.” “Race” is really nothing more than a political concept/weapon, and it has never been used for good by anybody, whether by slave owners or race-baiters.

On the humanities vs. sciences issues, I guess we should just be like the scholars of old and know about everything!

Yeah, the worst was on the campus where that evil stalker woman taught. We’ve got a pretty big moonbat/hippie population here, for some reason.

I guess we should feel sorry for Tipper Gore:
    1. She is married to Al Gore.
    2. Her name is “Tipper.”
Talk about going through life with a handicap!

My great-grandmother wanted my parents to name me “Scooter.” I can’t even imagine the damage that would have done to me. The only career paths that would have been open to me are pro sports and drug dealing. Or I could go with the norm and do both.

Oh, this is also the campus where the two cowardly thugs rushed the stage and threw pies at Ann Coulter (and missed, from point-blank range, hahaha!) a couple of years ago. There were also a bunch of protesters out in front of the lecture hall, being vulgar and confronting people. They had tried to get the university to prevent Coulter from coming.

I was there that night. It was interesting to see the patient and respectful response of the mostly conservative audience when leftist types got up and asked goofy questions. (Of course, when the two thugs jumped up on the stage, all the men in the audience went into action and the guy who made the mistake of trying to escape through the audience was about six inches into the wall within seconds. It was pretty stupid to try that with a lecture hall full of conservative men.)

It was also interesting to contrast that audience with the mob who went to see Michael Moore speak. They basically trashed the place, physically abused some of the Campus Republicans who were there (sitting quietly listening), and just in general acted as you would assume Michael Moore fans would act.

Sigh. can’t imagine why people think liberals are intolerant assholes (there are civil ones lurking in the background)

Sorry about my mis-assumption of Mormonism. I really thought it was a separate religion. I thought having a different bible was an indication of that, so it’s just an adapted form of the Christian bible? (It does sound a little different to think that God has a form like ours, but the other quotes on the website seemed like they were standard Christian quotes.)

True. And I’ve met all three. :)

Actually, we use the Bible and the Book of Mormon together, and believe that they both testify and teach of Jesus Christ, his gospel, and his atonement. (In fact, the subtitle given to the Book of Mormon is “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.”)

Don’t worry about your misunderstanding. I get all kinds of goofy things, like people thinking Mormons can’t eat whale meat (I heard that when I was in Japan), or that at weddings in Mormon temples, everybody is naked (which surprised me, since everybody was fully and modestly clothed at mine, and at every other one I’ve ever been to!).

    I’m allowed to dance.
I don’t have to wear a hat and a beard.
Alice Cooper was not ever a Mormon.
Steve Young, Gladys Knight, and John Heder are all Mormons.
There is not a tunnel leading from the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City to Denver.
No, Joseph Smith did not have a magic salamander, and no it isn’t locked up in the Church’s record vault.

    The Salamander Story
In the early 1980s, there was a guy named Mark Hoffman that came to the Mormon Church with what he claimed were letters and other documents from early church history. One of them was a letter that was supposedly written by an early member of the church, but the content was to a large extent a rehashing of early anti-Mormon stories.

Among other things, the letter said that a salamander had appeared to Joseph Smith and transformed itself into spirit that spoke to Joseph Smith. Because the content was so inconsistent with everything else known about Joseph Smith and early church history, and because so much of it seemed to be borrowed from anti-Mormon literature, there were doubts as to its authenticity, and the LDS church never purchased it. It was purchased by another collector of historical documents but was later found to be one of many forgeries that Hoffman, one of the most successful forgers in history, had created.

When it started to come out that it was a forgery, Hoffman set off two bombs, killing two people (one was the man who had purchased the forged document), and injuring himself when a third bomb blew up a bit too early in his car (sounds like Glasgow!). I think he’s still in prison.

The salamander thing kind of became a running gag in the Mormon Church for a while. “Where’d you hear that?” “Oh, a salamander told me.” That kind of thing.

    WayneB
    And Jehovah’s Witnesses.

I also got called a Mennonite once.

Anyway, McVeigh followed the blueprint verbatim hoping for the same result. There, the rest of the white world joined in the assault and created an all out race war. There goal was to seperate America into 4 quadrants (Whitelandia, Negroia, West Tel Aviv (NYC and Long Island) and Upper Hispaniola) while nuking the rest of the world. Anyone trespassing out of their race areas was summarily executed.

    PC,

I guess my trains of thought aren’t always obvious.

Hmmm, maybe wait until a better time when you’re brain is running on all clinders. I kid, I kid.

I was talking about the church burning. (I knew you said that, but I thought that you thought that I favored intervention, and that’s why I wanted to make clear that I didn’t). Talking about church burning seemed like a logical lead-in to campus burning, although I hadn’t been talking about that with you. Sorry to be homicidal in a post with you–I rarely am here.

As I’d said before, if the people at the church want to burn they own personally burnt stuff, than that’s their business since they’re burning up their own money. It may be shocking and disgusting, but that is the whole purpose. Those people are trying to shock you by doing that particular stunt. The best way to defeat it is to not let it shock you. Don’t give those guys what they want, which is attention. Lots and lots of it. Or better yet, laugh at them, since they keep forgetting that there are plenty more of the stuff they are burning. ;)

I’m an only, but I’ve heard that middle is really difficult.

I’ll put it to you this way, it could be worst. My father had a brother (deceased) and three sisters. His only advantage is that he’s the oldest one in his family.
