We’d simply say “pretty much all of them”, if there ever was a decade that deserved to be sunk into a salt mine and covered with concrete, the 70s would be it, but that would be too easy, so here are a few suggestions for LC & IB Michele:

1) “Having My Baby”: Michele’s already got it covered, but we have to nominate it again. Proving your undying love to somebody by NOT murdering his unborn child? Damn, if THAT’S not affection, we don’t know WHAT is. It’s even better than a friggin’ pony!

2) Pretty much anything by those revolting castrates, the Bee Gees, who served only to annoy the everloving shit out of me every time they kicked themselves in the nuts and started howling like banshees. Special mention goes to “Staying Alive”, simply because it always reminded me of the fact that they were entirely too successful in that department.

3) “Hooked on a Feeling”: If ever there was a song that would serve as a legitimate reason for a pre-emptive thermonuclear strike to keep the offending band from ever, EVER making another record, this would be one of them. The collateral damage would be entirely justifiable, not to mention that anybody living within 8 area codes of that abomination of a band would most likely be grateful for the sweet release of death.

4) “You Light Up My Life”: As saccharine, vapid schmaltz goes, you don’t get much more horrid than this one. Well, except for “Seasons in the Sun”, which deserves a category entirely of its own. But I digress. I always found myself wishing that somebody would light up her polyester shirt instead. With her still inside it.

5) “Do That To Me One More Time”: Gladly, dear. Do you want me to stick the Philips screwdriver in your eye this time, or would you prefer a butter knife?

6) “If You Leave Me Now”: If I do, you just might escape the fate that I have in mind for you. Of course, there’s always the risk that I’ll come back. With my little “toolbox.”

7) Absolutely, positively anything by John Denver. Thank you, G-d, for putting that big ass mountain right there.

8) That goes for the Village People too. Except for the fact that I’m still waiting for that fortuitously placed mountain to pop up in front of an aircraft with them on it. Their major achievement was to make sure that nobody, absolutely nobody in their right minds would ever want to re-visit the 70s. Except in a time machine. With a Barrett sniper rifle and a few cases of ammo.

9) “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”: No, Rod. And you still aren’t. Not to mention that you STILL can’t carry a note if it’s welded to the inside of a bucket and stapled to your sloping forehead. As a matter of fact, I’m still considering launching a class action lawsuit against that sand paper-voiced transvestite for unspecified damages related to the trauma of watching his scrawny figure wrapped in tight, red, synthetic leather… ARRGGHHHHHH!!!

10) And finally, everybody’s favorite “GAWD, but I frakkin’ HATE that song!”. No, we never claimed to be original: “Afternoon Delight.” If I had my wicked way, the perpetrators of that abortion of a song would be hunted down, strapped to a splintery piece of wood and tormented in ways that would make Shaitan himself crap on his hooves and projectile vomit in disgust and horror. And then, but ONLY then, would I proceed to get truly gruesome.

There you have it. Further recommendations are welcome.

I grew up with every song on this list, and like them all, especially the Bee Gees.
Hooked on a Feeling nailed down my third score ever.
That qualifies it as greatness in my book.

    Highness,
Bobby “Saccharine Vomit” Goldsboro and his all time, one time, only time hit “Honey” isn’t on the list?

See the tree, how big it’s grown
But friend it hasn’t been too long

And I killed her and ate her.
    And she tasted good.

    My list of 70’s stinkers:

    1..Anything by Christopher Cross
    2..Anything by Kenny Rogers
3..Anything by the BeeGees (gotta admit, they DID sound a lot like Alvin and the Chipmunks on crack).
4..Anything by Michael McDonald (how he could so utterly de-ball a great band like the Doobie Brothers is beyond me)
5..Any Rolling Stones album after Exile on Main Street
6..Any Led Zeppelin album after #4
    7..Disco. Period

    Basically, like the Emperor said:

We’d simply say “pretty much all of them”, if there ever was a decade that deserved to be sunk into a salt mine and covered with concrete, the 70s would be it,

The only saving grace to the whole decade was that there was a LOT of good jazz/rock fusion music. I still love albums like Where Have I Known You Before (Return to Forever), Mysterious Traveler (Weather Report), anything by Jeff Beck, and anything by Stanley Clarke.

Gimme the heavy rock of the late 60’s any day. If I can’t have that, I’ll take traditional country music…but not the Hollywood mainstream brand of country.

Can anyone tell me if the song, “Little Willy” was a song of the seventies?

I think the hildabitch needs a theme song for her attempt to defile the Oval Office and the song, “Little Willy” has the right lyrics:

    North side , east side
Little Willy, Willy wears the crown, he’s the king around town
    Dancing, glancing
Willy drives them silly with his star shoe shimmy shuffle down
Way past one, and feeling allright
‘Cos with little Willy round they can last all night
Hey down, stay down, stay down down

ANYTHING by the Doors. Jim Morrison had a fair voice, but nothing special. The only thing that made him an icon was his “tragic” death. Their songs were so unoriginal and repetitive, I can’t listen to them to this very day. ABBA is my guilty pleasure, though… and a running joke on IRC.

Now I’ll bet THAT was a hell of a show. You got the memory sparking up and I’m remembering some good stuff from the ’70’s and early 80’s.

Most notably, watching an up and coming rock/blues trio from Delaware rock the hell out of the Little Bear tavern in Evergreen Colorado. If my memory serves me right, I think they called themselves George Thorogood and the Destroyers.

other notables that almost saved that decade:

    Dave Edmunds
    Foghat (the first two albums)
Manassas (Steve Stills best band after CSNY)
Rodney Crowell (wrote a lot of songs for Emmylou Harris)
    The Kinks (Misfits, Muswell Hillbillies)

I really can’t add any to the list of bad ’70s songs, though I will enthusiastically second the opinion that Michael McDonald-era Doobie Brothers sucks ass, big-time. As for good music, though, I really like Gordon Lightfoot as well, and just about anything country from back then, too. *walks off singing Merle Haggard* “…My hat don’t hang on the same nail too long, my ears can’t stand to hear the same ole song, and I don’t leave the highway long enough, to bog down in the mud, ’cause I’ve got ramblin’ fever in my blooood….”

Ok, I agree with the list, but without the 70’s, there is no Steely Dan, Grand Funk Railroad, or Bob Seger in his prime. Take away any of those, and you have committed a crime against rock and roll.

Some pretty good suggestions there, LCs. And I thought I was already traumatized by crappy 70s “music”, but oh no, you all just HAD to bring back more painful memories.

    Although this is pure brilliance:

See the tree, how big it’s grown
But friend it hasn’t been too long
    It wasn’t big
I laughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it, was just a twig

And I killed her and ate her.
    And she tasted good.
    With a glass of chianti,
    I knew that she would.

At least now I can hear that song without wanting to drive steak forks into my ears.

Of course, explaining why I’m laughing hysterically might not be all that easy.

    You’re referring to music like:
    Steely Dan: Pretzel Logic
    Grand Funk Live
    Bob Seger: Back in 72

    Total classics

Got ‘em all….and highly recommend ‘em all. Especially the Seger album (got that one on vinyl). It’s hard to find now, especially in this era of CD’s.

Add Gary Wright’s “Dream Weaver” to the list of sucky 70s songs.

This site has a list of bad 70s songs. Although I disagree with the inclusion of America, Harry Chapin, Chicago, Neil Diamond, Eagles, The Guess Who, Kansas, Gerry Rafferty, Al Stewart and Three Dog Night. And George Benson’s very best song, “Masquerade” - grrr. You know there are Bee Gee, Osmond and Manilow songs on the list. Notoriously absent is the second worst James Bond theme ever, Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die.” (The worst is Madonna’s “Die Another Day.”)

The 70’s? Well, yeah, disco and mainstream top 40 crap sucked donkey balls. I had older brothers looking out for me, though, and they introduced me to:

    Van Halen
    Montrose
Journey (Before that shitbird Perry turned ‘em into a fag band)
    Kansas
    Pat Traverse
Frank Zappa (They probably shouldn’t have done this)
    Thin Lizzy
    AC/DC
    Rush
    Genesis
    Blue Oyster Cult

I could go on, but nobody gives a fuck.

Oh, though I’d add that I consider 1977 to be the year the music died - the unofficial start of disco, marked by the release of Saturday Night Fever. 1967-1977 was rock music’s best decade. It produced a lot of cool and/or unique sounds - aside from suboptimal’s list there’s these:

    Moody Blues
Eric Clapton / Cream / Procol Harum Billy Joel
    Jethro Tull
Deep Purple (best “Smoke on the Water” is the “Live in Tokyo” version)
Supertramp (”School” has the most joyful piano solo EVER of ANY musical genre)
Steve Winwood / Traffic (”And the man in the suit just bought a new car from the profit he made from you’re greens…”)

And yes, “Afternoon Delight” is a truly horrific song.

I was born in 1970 so I didn’t know what it was about - I thought it was about dessert. My grandma, a good Lutheran lady, held various church ladies’ clubs at her home, and I swear - more than half of those desserts had the word “delight” in them.

Do you remember the words, B is W? “Daniel” was so faggy in the original. I’d love to hear the parody.

Reaching back through the mists of time, to a place where I had little responsibility(oh to be 17 again), freinds in low places(who weren’t professional associates), and waaaaaaaay too much time on my hands…the part that comes to mind immediately:

Daniel’s falling tonight from the plane. I can hear his screams of terror as he tumbles toward Spain…oh and I hear Daniel screaming “NO I…..” Lord it looks like Daniel…falling from the sky….Daniel my brother, you inherited more than me, do you still feel the pain, where I kicked you in the knee?…

I’d like to add one atrocity that I don’t think has been mentioned. I can’t recall the singer’s name, but it was another falsetto, maybe Nick Guilder. The words went something like:

    Matthew Wilder, Break My Stride.

“Ain’t nothin’ gonna break my stride

I would like to ask just exactly what is wrong, empirically, with the music of the 70s? I would argue that the writing (not withstanding most on Misha’s list) in that decade far outpaced all decades of the 20th century except for maybe the 40s. Certainly nothing in the 80s or 90s even comes close. The 60s were warmed over 50s (which in an of itself was reactionary to the music of the 40s).

Already we have some good examples of the more innovative artists of the 70s as posted by others. To those I would add The Alan Parsons Project, Yes, Pat Metheny, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Focus, Queen and dozens of other Art Rock bands and albums.

Certainly Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven, has to stand as a true war horse of the 70s.

And why diss Barry Manilow? Some might not like his voice but he is, along with Billy Joel, the Carpenters, Paul McCartney, and Elton John, one of the greatest popular ballad writers of the late 20th century.

Sometimes I think some people just like to put down things that are not “new” in order to look more “cool”. Put down the fads and the poorly written songs of the 70s for there were many. But Manilow, Joel, John, Queen, and many other great artists of the 70s have stood the test of time.

Now, because I also was a DJ in the 70s, I do have my most hated list as well. At the top of this list is “Hotel California” by the Eagles. Not because the Eagles are no longer that popular but instead, because it has truly some of the most banal lyrics ever written (and the continuous use of about four chords throughout an overlong song doesn’t help much either).

Holy stinkin’ cow, dude, that was frickin’ hilarious! My favorite line is “I’d like to teach you how to scream / While begging on your knees.” My wife, on the other hand, is partial to “Grab your head between your lips and peel it like a grape.”

Oh, and to add my 2 cents, I like “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” by the BeeGees, and “Long Long Time” by Linda Ronstadt (both artists dissed here). Yes, the BeeGees had some scary disco stuff, but you gotta admit, some of their stuff was really good. And even though Ronstadt is a seditious cluetard, she doesn’t mouth off much, and she has a heck of a voice. She’s an odd duck, but her voice is amazing.

I guess she’s a reason for the book titled, “Shut Up and Sing,” eh? :biggrin_wp:

Okay, I think this is a 60’s song, but what’s up with that Doors song that sounds like a broadway cabaret song? The lyrics are, “Come on come on come on come on come on touch me, babe,” and it goes on from there. I always get this mental picture of Jim Morrison in a tux, like Michigan Frog, coming down a flight of stairs with a top hat and cane, and a fountain on the set. Kind of like the end of “Blazing Saddles.” :)

Because we’re haters, Beeblebrox. Do I really have to keep repeating the Sith code? Does NOBODY pay attention to what is taught at the Imperial Academy anymore?

    Through passion, I gain strength.
    Through strength, I gain power.
    Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
    The Force shall free me.

That aside, there’s the small matter of the 70s having the worst possible dress code in known history. If I were to dress the Heirs up in clothes like what I had to wear back then, they could kill me and get off with a “justifiable homicide” verdict.

As to the music itself, although there were notable exceptions to the rule, it was worse than the utterly forgettable 90s simply by virtue of the fact that it was so atrociously bad that there is no forgetting it.

People have already forgotten the 90s, simply because there was pretty much nothing worth noticing, but the 70s left such an indelible scar on humanity that we may never truly recover.

Oh how I WISH that I could just forget. The sweet bliss of amnesia. But no, every time I feel that I’m about ready to leave the past behind and consign the utterly banal, saccharine nonsense of the 70s to the vault of forgetfulness that they so richly deserve, some sadistic arsehole DJ will play “Afternoon Delight” on the radio, bringing all of my deeply suppressed, indescribably painful memories back in living color.

Just when I feel that I am on the very cusp of leaving my trauma behind, some modern-day Dr Mengele with a soundboard will play “Seasons in the Sun” and doom me to another year of screaming in horror, clawing my eardrums out and wishing that somebody would just fire a high-velocity round through my brain pan to stop the pain.

And the polyester. Please don’t even get me STARTED on the polyester… ARRGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

You want lousy Seventies Songs? OK, I’ll start with Neil Young’s pretentious, whiny, self-righteous “Southern Man.” Congress should pass a law stating that any time that song is played, it must be immediately followed by Lynryd Skynryd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” as a rebuttal. Because Southern Men - or Yankees, Left Coasters or Midwesterners, for that matter - don’t really “need him ’round anyhow.”

And while they’re at it: Congress should also pass another law stating that “Sweet Home Alabama” should ONLY be played as a rebuttal to Neil Young…because frankly, since every classic rock station in the country has been playing that song at least ten times a day for the past thirty-odd years, it’s getting a little old. Furthermore, speaking of pretentious, whiny self-righteousness, Skynryd’s “Saturday Night Special” ought to be banished from the airwaves entirely.

Somebody already nominated John Lennon’s “Imagine” to the list. I’ll second that, and raise you another former Beatle. George Harrison’s annoying “My Sweet Lord” (the song whose chorus goes from “Hallelujah” to “Hare Krishna”) surely belongs on the list. He must have been on drugs when he came up with it. And speaking of drugs: Brewer and Shipley’s “One Toke Over the Line.” surely belongs on the list of awfulness as well.

And finally: Anything by Shaun Cassidy.

I got to thinking about the whole 70’s music thing and disco in particular. Give it some hard thought, there were a few pretty damned good pre-disco funk bands back then. Listen to anything by the Ohio Players (before they released Skin Tight), you won’t find a dirtier grittier funkier band than those guys…they could really play. Their best albums were the ones with the S/M themes on the covers…you know the ones, they have the babe on the front wrapped in chains and oil and leather (admit it, YOU looked at those covers). An anthology of their early stuff and later hits has been release but I can’t bring myself to buy it…how would I explain to my wife that I just bought this CD titled “Orgasms”…even though the music flat kicks ass.

Tower of Power was another great band, they hit their peak when Lenny Williams sang for them…their horn section played on countless albums as session players. If you want a good taste of very cool funk/jazz listen to Kool and the Gangs album Light of Worlds (it’s a perfect summer cruising album).

Fusion albums? try Spectrum or Crosswinds by Billy Cobham, Birds of Fire (Mahavishnu Orchestra), land of the Midnight Sun (Al Di Meola)….

Straight ahead jazz? The Last Concert (Modern Jazz Quartet), Southern Comfort (The Crusaders)…

I, on the other hand, did develop that taste. Freddie and his guys could harmonize in ways that would make seraphim commit the cardinal sin of envy.

As to his personal sexual preferences, I couldn’t care less. He’s dealing with that right now. I hope that he’s worked it out with G-d, because I’d really feel robbed if he wasn’t there when it’s my turn to go there.

All I know is that he had talent, and that he didn’t use his disease as a way of grandstanding and “pursue the cause”, he just dealt with it. I miss him.

He didn’t bother me with his homosexuality, and nor have any other gay friends of mine, which makes it none of my business. He just sang his heart out and did one heck of a job doing so.

OK, so he DID get awfully close to the line with “We Are the Champions” (what a G-dawful piece of crap), but he also gave us “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

See, and where I commiserate is that I’ve spent the last 9 months listening to a “rock” station which considers variety to be playing the same 2 songs of every artist every day. So a good song like “All Right Now” eventually makes you want to turn your boombox into a sparking heap of plastic and silicon on the floor.

But I just got XM, so I can pick whatever the heck I want to listen to without fear of being stuck listening to “Maybe I’m Amazed” for the 500,000,000,000th time. Because for some reason, these idiots can’t figure out that a band can have 10-20 good songs in their repertoire.

But that’s commercial radio, the music’s simply a tool to lure you in to listen to the ads.

Ah, yes. Melanie. I remember Melanie. Actually she may pre-date the 70’s. Who among us who lived through that era can forget “Beautiful People.” I was a lib then and that song made me wretch.

But I recall a recording by Mel of the standard, “Almost Like Being in Love” which I thought was quite good.

Spatula, it’s amazing you recognized “Break My Stride” from the two lines I printed. The strains of that melody will forever be intertwined with a box of nappies! :lol_tb: :tongue2_tb:

In looking at this thread I think we could make a case that the 70s rocked as far as music is concerned. Yeah, the whole polyester thing was sad but then again, I would take a kid in polyester over the crotch down to the knees with the jockey shorts hanging out ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

The 70s contribution to jazz has been mentioned several times but really, that genre never really gets spoiled by fads except for when it tries to go too main stream (i.e. “lite” ala Kenny G). And yes, some jazz giants like Maynard Ferguson step in it bad with faddy stuff on a few occasions.

But even if we stick to the pros and cons in the popular music field, I think it could be stated that there were many great artists working that decade.

Some of my favorites from that era:

    Kansas
    Journey
    Three Dog Night
    The Doobie Bros.
    Carpenters
    Alan Parsons Project
Jeff Wayne (War of the Worlds)
    Moody Blues
    Yes
    Pink Floyd
    Santana
    Billy Joel
    Elton John
    Mannheim Steamroller
    BS&T
    Tower of Power
    Chicago
    CSN&Y
    Led Zeppelin
    ELP
    ELO
    Dan Fogelberg
Meatloaf (although his best stuff was in the 80s)
    Queen
    Styx
    The Who
    And many others

Less favorite but still arguably pretty good:

    James Taylor
    Joni Mitchell
    Jim Croce
    Credence Clearwater Revival
    Barry Manilow
Barbra Streisand (sorry, but she was once great)
Cat Stevens (before he went crazy)
    Earth, Wind, and Fire
    Bread
And probably a lot of other ones I’m forgetting…

That’s a pretty good list Beeblebrox I agree with almost all those you have there.
    Journey
    Meatloaf
    Chicago

And even though Ronstadt is a seditious cluetard, she doesn’t mouth off much, and she has a heck of a voice.

Amen to that. I loved just about everything Linda Ronstadt did, but my absolute favorite is “Blue Bayou.”
Speaking of “All Right Now,” how about the band that Paul Rodgers fronted after that one, Bad Company? Did Free have any other hits besides ARN? BC’s “Shooting Star” has to be one of the greatest songs ever, IMO.
I love Skynyrd as well, and completely agree about “Saturday Night Special” being banished from the airwaves forever. My fave Skynyrd hit is a toss-up between “Gimme Back My Bullets” and “Tuesday’s Gone.”

We were stuck with the likes of Blue Cheer, Atomic Rooster, Electric Flag, Tropics (toured with the Amboy Dukes of Nuge) Robin Trower, Jefferson Everything, Troggs,Humble Pie, Foghat, MC-5 , Outlaws, Mollie Hatchet, Stevie Ray Vaughn, along with a bunch listed by Jaybear

Yes, some parts are a bit dated given the heavy use of, then fairly innovative, electronic keyboards. A few of the songs have a bit of a disco-ish feel to the rhythm tracks but not objectionably so.

However, I still maintain that it is the very best musical adaptation of a novel ever composed. The opening moments are worth the price of admission alone.

Jeff Wayne is an amazing electric guitarist and the guitar parts have held up very well over time. Read the reviews at iTunes on this album and EVERYONE considers it a landmark work.

I own the original album on vinyl but also purchased it recently on iTunes and it really is an amazing piece of music.

    BlackisWhite, Beeblebrox

Roger what you both said about War of the Worlds….Jeeeezus, I haven’t heard that album in years, did Alan Parsons have anything to do with that? Back when FM rock stations were worth a crap (before the days of corporate generated playlists), there were a couple in Denver that would occasionally play that album in it’s entirety. That was always good for smoking up and putting on the headphones….if’n you know what I mean. Thank God THOSE days are over.

A few more gems from the 70’s:

    Station to Station (David Bowie)
    Pyramid (Alan Parsons)
    Rough and Ready (Jeff Beck)
    Roxy and Elsewhere (Frank Zappa)
    Tommy Bolin (Both solo albums)
Traffic (The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys)
Montrose (the album with Space Station No. 5 on it)
    Robert Palmer (Double Fun)
    Byrds (Untitled)
    Uriah Heep (Demons and Wizards)
Allman Brothers (Idlewild South, Live at the Fillmore)
    Duane Allman Anthology
Doobie Brothers (The Captain and Me)
    John Mayall (The Turning Point)
    Paul Butterfield (Better Days)

You’ve all given me a reason to scrounge through my vinyl collection again…and I’m eternally grateful for that, I sometimes forget the treasures that I have in that cabinet full of 600 (estimated) records that I protect so fiercely.

    Jaybear,

Your tastes are a bit more ecclectic than mine but hey, any guy that puts Alan Parsons on his list is okay with me. His first album, Tales of Mystery and Imagination is a true masterpiece.

As for Zappa, never really a fan although Evelyn the Modified Dog does have a certain, special, sumthin’:

    Evelyn, a modified dog
Viewed the quivering fringe of a special doily
Draped across the piano, with some surprise

    In the darkened room
    Where the chairs dismayed
    And the horrible curtains
    Muffled the rain
She could hardly believe her eyes

    A curious breeze
    A garlic breath
    Which sounded like a snore
Somewhere near the Steinway (or even from within)
Had caused the doily fringe to waft & tremble in the gloom

    Evelyn, a dog, having undergone
    Further modification
Pondered the significance of short-person behavior
    In pedal-depressed panchromatic resonance
    And other highly ambient domains…

    Arf she said

    Jaybear,

Alan Parsons did not have any connection to War of the Worlds (although it might not surprise us if he had, it is engineered very well).

He is probably best known outside of The Project for engineering Dark Side of the Moon and Abbey Road. Interestingly enough he produced and engineered Al Stewart’s Year of the Cat as well as several albums by the UK group Pilot.

He now tours with his Alan Parsons Live Project (saw them in concert a couple of years ago in LA and they are as good as ever).

Alan, that line sends chills up my spine every time I hear it, not the least because the musical overture that follows it sets the stage in such an ominous manner that one cannot help but be drawn into the story.

For those who loved “Forever Autumn” but never knew from whence it originated, I heartily recommend that you visit the iTunes Music Store and listen to a few excerpts from Jeff Wayne’s labor of love. Except for maybe “Fall of the House of Usher” by Alan Parsons, and Wakeman’s previously mentioned “Journey”, it is almost a genre unto itself.

And just so people are not confused, Alan is quoting the original H.G. Wells opening to the story.

The version written by Jeff Wayne that opens his opus reads somewhat better I think:

No-one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No-one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.

Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets. And yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this earth with envious eyes; and slowly, and surely, they drew their plans against us.
