(Via LC & IB Dan Riehl):

On a narrow, leafy street in Northwest Washington, where Prius hybrid cars and Volvos are the norm, one man bought a flashy gray Hummer that was too massive to fit in his garage.

So he parked the seven-foot-tall behemoth on the street in front of his house and smiled politely when his eco-friendly neighbors looked on in disapproval at his “dream car.”

It lasted five days on the street before two masked men took a bat to every window, a knife to each 38-inch tire and scratched into the body: “FOR THE ENVIRON.”

Welcome to D.C., buddy. Of course, if you’d caught the terrorists in the act and as much as scratched their fragile little egos, you’d have been charged with assault.

The neighbors, of course, are overflowing with sympathy and outrage:

“The neighborhood in general is very concerned with the environment,” said Liem, whose Prius gets about 48 miles a gallon compared with the Hummer’s 14 miles a gallon. “It’s more liberal leaning. It’s ridiculous to be driving a Hummer.”

Er… OK, maybe not so much. But she does hasten to add:

Liem added quickly that she does not condone violence.

Not even against “ridiculous Hummer owners.” Well, that’s good. On to the list of “persons of interest you go”, you judgmental, holier-than-thou, daft cow.

Now, to the demented envirofucks guilty of this: Why don’t you try one of your stunts down here where the citizenry isn’t disarmed by law, huh? Really. Come on. Come down and make a “statement”, why don’t ya? We’d love to give y’all a good old-fashioned Texas welcome. Don’t be a stranger, y’hear?

Vandalizing the guys hummer was really really dumb. I bet that guy is already spending his insurance check in his mind.

“Lets see…New, bigger runflat tires. Bullbar incase I ever happen to catch any of those punks walking down the street, Unspecified object rack in the back for when I drive my hummer out of the Peoples Republic of DC, Loud ass exhaust system to rattle the neighbors volvos, pimped out stereo…” am I missing anything?

Poor little libtards can’t even vandalize stuff right. Pinhole a few radiator lines, nail-prop the tires, loosen the lugnuts a quarter turn or so, give the brake lines an ever so subtle kink, loosen the oilpan drain plug, scotch weld or epoxy the fueldoor shut, I’ve got a million of ‘em. I’ve never done any of these things mind you, I just have a creative imagination.

I’m just wondering where these supposed environmentalists managed to acquire a knife capable of puncturing those tires without raping Gaia to obtain iron ore and coal and such-like. Can we get a constitutional amendment passed to declare open hunting season on anyone that hypocritical?

Nah, probably not. Congress wouldn’t be safe if we did.

Think of the additional damage to the environment they have created. The car will now have to be sanded and repainted (releasing particulates) and the old windows recycled (using energy to melt and mold another set of windows), and everyones insurance rate in the neighborhood goes up because the area is tagged as having loonies running around in it.

Hmmmm, a Hummer may be nice vehicle, but for ultimate intimidation and vandalism protection, I would propose something a bit more mighty…

    Puma IFV

a nice 30mm autocannon, fully stabilized

and no tires to puncture. Now that would be a splendid vehicle for such a neighborhood.

I just got a very funny image in my head of this guy driving back home after dealing with the Hummer ordeal in a tank.

I, on the other hand, just got a very funny feeling in my pants looking at that picture.

Just watch and toss out an Artillery Simulator upon their next visit.

And that, LC Wil, reminds me of another funny story from my deranged military days, right after I transferred from the Regulars to the Home Guard (in order to remain in the Brotherhood while still being able to pursue a civilian career, seeing as how the Cold War had been won while I wasn’t looking and all). The unit I had gotten was on a cookie-cutter weekend warrior maneuver and were assigned to hold an objective from the half-civilian pukes from a neighboring unit. Naturally, the maggots from the other field post number were expecting a standard “walk in on the outnumbered part-time soldiers with guns blazing” assault with predictable results. What they hadn’t counted on was that the unit they were assaulting was led by a vicious, demented bastard (guess who?) qualified on explosives and other nasty tricks of the regular trade.

So a quick pre-maneuver trip to the quartermaster, another old grunt, and a handful of beers later, and they were in for an ugly surprise.

Being good sojers, they attacked right before the break of dawn in order to be able to sneak up under cover of darkness and hit us just as it became light enough for them to see what the fuck they were doing. Their commander obviously read his books, which was good, because I’d expected him to. Unfortunately, he forgot the bit about not attacking upwind, which led to some discomfort as his troops were enveloped in a nice cloud of CS gas. Surprise number one. To his credit, they took it in stride, suited up, regrouped and waited for the gas to lift, then tried again from a different angle. That’s when they found the trip wires and the Arty Sims. One of the poor saps got close enough to one of them that he was thrown some ten feet through the air. No permanent injury, just some severe bruising and a persistent ringing in the ears for a few days. And then we opened up with every weapon we had on the remainder as they were running around looking for cover. Complete slaughter, I tell you, and for some reason my unit was forever low on the list when it came to picking “red”, sorry, ORANGE forces after that.

You know, these little cars that became so popular about 1978 or so (thanks, Peanut Farmer!) are part of the problem with the world today. When the backseats got to be too small to f***, the minds of kids just went haywire, and the country hasn’t recovered yet.

Back when a high school Junior’s first car was a 10 year old Chevy tank with a back set ya could grow wheat in, kids had some damn sense when they grew up. Now, they all have to date in tin can sized rice grinders, and don’t know what to do anymore.

Speaking of D.C….they’re wetting their panties trying to appeal the court ruling that throws their stupid ass gun ban out the window.

The District argues there is no such thing as an individual right to keep and bear arms, and that the Framers did not intend to protect one. Pointing to the prefatory clause of the Second Amendment (”A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State”), it argued in court that the substantive clause (”the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed”) was not really intended to protect a “right of the people,” but a right of state governments to maintain militias.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind a Hybrid (although the Prius looks like a discarded clog, it’s true).

Have you seen just how much toxic shit gets dumped into Mother Gaia’s buttcrack (China) when they make those precious “environmentally sound” batteries?

I’ll try and find the article, but basically everything for 30 miles/km (I forget which) around those factories is dead, looks like a shiny version of the moon from all the metals and crud in the soil and water.

Now, when they combine BIG with TOXIC I want one.

The Hummer Deus. 3000lbs of batteries that mutated an entire generation of slave labourers in some arsehole in china. As ecologically sound as a nuke test. Now with a big-ass bass speaker to fill in for the missing engine noise. Optional taser doors. Sunroof. Moonroof. Gunports. Pintle mounted M2 (not available in the PRK or other GFW states). Available in Bulletproof Black only.

SoCal, something else regarding the battery replacement… By the time it rolls around, the car will have depreciated in value to less than half it’s purchase price. And given that most hybrids are cracker boxes to start with, one third the price would be more likely.

So now you have a car the books somewhere between $7500-$11,000 (if you’re lucky), and it’s gonna cost you (last I heard) $6 to $8 thousand to replace the battery. Is it even possible to save enough on gas to make that worthwhile???

Me, gimme a new conventional Camry. It’ll be paid off in 4-6 years, and with proper care, I’ll be driving that bastard 20+ years from now.

I want to get a hybrid one day, but you should not act holier than thou and trash someone else’s car-let them drive what they want, and you drive what you want.

Mindy, I’ll agree with you 100% on the second 1/2 of your statement- carefully check out my avatar if you don’t believe me. I’ll also say this- if you really want a hybrid, go for it. I’m not the one making the payments. But, if a hybrid is important to you from an ecological stand, there are a few things to consider. The issue of batteries and their associated environmental costs have been pointed out by other posters. Other salient points are: the actual fuel economy, especially vis-a-vis the premium paid for what is essentially a very old idea (Dr. Porsche did this with gun tractors for the Austro-Hugarian Army ca.1905),and the fact that production of a car consumes considerably more energy than the car itself will consume over it’s working lifetime- and well beyond. This means that a crappy 10 year old Civic is by far more environmentally friendly than any new Pious Prius could ever be for a very long time. If you really want one, though, go buy one. I will not deride you, stand in your way, or make snide personal comments because you thought a hybrid was right for you. My personal opinion on hybrids though is they are a cynical attempt at capturing market share that did not exist before. Current battery technology may finally catch up and make me eat my words, but I honestly think that won’t happen for a while.

Absolutely true, Psychochick. But this marketing attempt is more about “looking good” to the enviroweenies who know little to nothing about cars. “Oooooh, look, Toyota is doing it’s part to make the Earth greener! Lets all go spend 40K Dollars to buy one- it gets slightly better gas mileage than a normal Corolla, and we’re helping Mother Earth, too!” If any real thought were put into those purchases at all- I know, I know, car buyers are frequently more emotional than rational- so it squared up with their so-called ecoactivism, there would be a lot fewer hybrids on the street. My contention that just a plain-vanilla Civic ULEV- anything certified ULEV, for that matter- is more “eco-friendly” than any hybrid made stands.

Toyotas usually run at least 200,000 miles. I don’t know if a Prius will live as long. Since they introduced the Prius in 2000, they haven’t had to replace a single battery.

How is it socialist to save money? Explain that to me. It seems like buying a new car would be a decidedly non-Socialist thing.

    1) Buying a Prius does not save money, verses 30 other high mileage cars that are not hybrids. If you like, I can do some real math (cost per mile) for you to clear the “saving money” claim if need be.

    2) Buying any car new, does not save money. Again, I can provide some 12mo/12,000mi figures, 24mo/24,000mi figures and finally some 36mo/36,000mi figures. The average “loss” on a new car is $4,600 “off the lot”, more for premium cars, um, like a Prius for example. That is 1,500+ gallons of fuel right there.

    3) If a person were to do some simple addition, subtraction and light multiplication with only a hint of division (no fractions, I promise), they would find the cost per mile on the Prius places it in the mid 30’s of all available cars in 2007 worldwide in $/Mile.

    4) If that same said person (supposedly intelligent) actually saw the damage to the environment caused in the raw materials acquisition, refinement and mostly, disposal of waste to produce the power train, they would logically conclude, they are buying a fad, for fad reasons and not saving the environment in any way (excluding the fact when a dually flattens them at an intersection and there is one less carbon burning monkey making things worse).

    5) One can reasonably argue, that these cars not only cost more to drive, they create more toxins, waste more natural resources, create far more CO2 (shipping raw materials from China to Europe to Japan to US) just to get the pieces parts assembled at a reasonable cost.

Let’s recap for a memory refresher

“The neighborhood in general is very concerned with the environment,” said Liem, whose Prius gets about 48 miles a gallon compared with the Hummer’s 14 miles a gallon. “It’s more liberal leaning. It’s ridiculous to be driving a Hummer.”

    Let’s review:

The “residents” in this utopian neighborhood do not drive old cars, fast cars, cool cars, monster trucks, Harleys or anything resembling what rational, respectful capitalists drive (the ones that do not cause thousands of dollars in damage to a neighbors car via violence cum shame), no, instead these freedom loving, live and let live, impeccably tolerant, highly educated, “don’t you question my patriotism”, eco-friendly neighbors act just like the Muslim teenagers in France when their shame is rekindled, they trash an innocent persons car (or hundreds if they happen to be handy).

    Why?

It’s 23K for the cheapest Prius (40K?). It’s an SULEV (went out with a flashlight to double check). I have no idea how that compares to ULEV, but I will probably check. I’m curious what the gas mileage of a Corolla is. If you don’t know, I would be curious to look into it myself. If I don’t speed, I get 50 mpg highway, and it’s $20-25 to fill up my tank. We each have one, and we’ve been very happy with them. (used to have a Corolla bought used–it was wonderful)

ULEV might be more eco-friendly if you factor in the energy cost of producing the car.

I don’t see what’s so horrible about not wanting to contribute to smog. It’s a health issue in some cities.

Smog is a mathematical reality directly related to population density. Not the car you drive.

The real answer to smog is move the fuck out. The Earth has a limit to the amount of “poison” it can properly digest per hour/per square km. You see, when too many selfish people congregate in a small area, they destroy the environment. They all have the usual excuses such as “my work is here”, or “my family is here”. I have heard it all. Just watch them squirm when you suggest they earn less money living away from the city. (Scary word Sacrifice)

What is really weird is, when you look at population data, crime data, smog data and quality of life data, you see that conservatives have roughly 600% less violent crime, 2000% more land, almost zero smog and good schools. Illogical, I know 

Aw, never mind, stay in the city, drive the Prius, you must be right.

    1) Apparently, there is all this environmental degradation I was unaware of in 2003

    2) new cars. You may be right in general, and I don’t know what the current state of Priuses. But there was a shortage of them for a number of years, and your argument did not apply. One year after buying my car, I could have sold it for full purchase price! It’s a 2003 car. I checked the price a few months ago, and I think (might not be remembering exactly) the sale price would have been 11K (22K initially). Then at one point there was a 6 month waiting list, so I think you could have sold used ones for a good price. So your costing more to drive argument goes in the toilet (for older cars).

    3) That is utterly ridiculous to say that capitalists don’t drive a Prius. How about the Prius driver that runs a large bookstore. Is that capitalist enough for you? A variety of people drive them. What about the conservative on this site?–he likes the technology

One person being a property-destroying asshole is comparable to the mass riots of French youth? Isn’t that kind of a stretch? Why apply subtlety when you can use a sledgehammer? Telling me about a specific Prius purchasing hysteria period relating to “resale” value does not invalidate my mathematical point that new cars cost far more money to operate than a used one. That is silly. I was talking about the 22,266,982 cars on the road in your state, all of them.

Let us not toss common sense out the window with the baby.

    ===================================================

I did not say capitalists did not drive a Prius, I said respectful capitalists drive all kinds of vehicles, including Hummers, but the point was, respectful capitalists do not trash a neighbors car because they do not “approve”, that would be socialist swine.

My analogy to French Muslims is valid.

You keep saying “one person” did that. No, read the story. The news person is talking to a person that lives on the same street. “The neighborhood” is the first two words of the quote. “It’s ridiculous to be driving a Hummer” is the last quote of my quote. The lady being interviewed never said “That is a shame”, or “Nobody should do that to another car”

    No

She never said a word against the crime, because she, and all her smug neighbors approve of the eco-terrorist act, clearly. And that was my point. Hence, when an entire neighborhood of “Prius Owners” approves of this behavior, you have Muslims in France torching cars. “He deserved it” 1 + 1 = 2

Again, I am not claiming all Prius owners are socialist swine, just most of them. Do I know this, yes, can I prove it, no. It’s like my asshole, we all have one.

By the way, I was purposefully being snarky and tossing fire bombs because I already knew you drove a Prius and hadn’t talked with you in a while.

If you surf some more threads, you will see yesterday where I called “scientists” all kinds of bad things. But you did not “bite” there… Such is life.

    Soldier-

Smog is a mathematical reality directly related to population density. Not the car you drive.

Incorrect. It is related to the smog-producing elements in the area, not necessarily population. The smog in 1920s and 30s LA was VERY bad (worse than now) and the population was much smaller than it is now.

Nice to see you, too. You have an odd way of greeting people. I had kind of missed posting with you, but not if you are going to be snarky!

1)” new cars. You may be right in general,”
You were using the argument specifically to discuss Priuses–you can’t complain if I then talk about them (well, apparently you can)

    2) If you go up top and scroll down, she did say she doesn’t condone violence. It could have more specific: “That was an utterly horrible thing to do,” which would be my response.

So, she did condemn it, but not in very strong terms. To me, this is more ecoterrorism than mass mob attack, but I understand your logic.

How is it socialist to save money? Explain that to me. It seems like buying a new car would be a decidedly non-Socialist thing.

PC, it’s not socialist to save money.

It is, however, socialist to punish me for not buying (or wanting to buy) a crapmobile I don’t want in favor of buying an SUV that I do  want.

    Hope that helps.

Well, I’m not 100% sold that About.com always has their information correct, but I found this article there about cost of Hybrid batteries.

    From the article:

To purchase a brand new hybrid battery from a dealer, the price for a Honda Insight Hybrid battery is around $3600.

In November of 2005, when asked about the price of a new Prius battery, Toyota spokeswoman Mona Richard said, “The service parts price for a new battery is $3000, but we have not had to sell a battery yet.”

There is also a link there to this article on the expected lifetime of the battery.

    From that article:

For example, on hybrid components, Honda provides a 8 year/80,000 mile warranty; Toyota provides an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty.

Refuel the Sr-90 battery once every 45 years. And it is big enough to not be a source of contamination if it gets hit.

PC– Did you ever have problems with Toyota “zapping” your Prius if you did not go in for maintance? Believe it or not last summer in the Nevada Desert we met a poor guy on the side of the road with a brand new Prius who told us that if you are low on gas or miss some sort of routine maintance you have to have the car towed to the dealership?

Just to add something here since it is environ related…I’m here in Minnesota attending a residency program working on my Ph.D. We are required to attend a conference on social change. Out keynote speaker this morning was none other than Robert F($!!g Kennedy, Jr. I lasted about 20 minutes. Here’s the highlights:

He can’t eat fish anymore because of “that son-of-a-bitch Bush.” Apparently, he blames Bush for the mercury levels in New York freshwater fish.

There is no liberal media. ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN are all minions of the right wing conservative party and are complicit in keeping the damage to the environment caused by the Bush administration a secret.

George Bush is being paid directly by corporate lobbyists to remove environmental laws or to turn his back when they commit environment murder.

Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and Novak are all corporate toadies and are the voice of the Bush Administration. This lead into a discussion about bringing back the fairness doctrine. He stereotyped the entire south..which invariably led to several audience members standing up and leaving. His exact comment? “The fairness doctrine allowed the farmers in Kansas to get their crop reports. It allowed you southerners to get your country music…” Apparently, we in the south are just hicks and that’s the only thing we listen to.

And..the last thing I heard before I decided to leave is there is a conspiracy in the Bush administration led by corporate lobbyists to squelch any opposition to global warming.

    See ya,
    Bob O

Pebble bed reactor with a high pressure inert gas turbine. Use Strontium-90 Iridium coated pebbles. Temp is only 400C, but cleanup in case of an accident only requires asbestos gauntlets and a fire-proof box to put the loose pebbles in.

It can co-generate power when parked, and waste heat can be used to heat your home and make hot water.
