CHESHIRE, Conn. (AP) — Two men accused of killing a physician’s wife and two daughters and setting fire to their house in this upscale town are suspected in two other burglaries the night before, said homeowners who spoke with police.

Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes, both on parole for nonviolent crimes, could face the death penalty if convicted in the slayings early Monday of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and the girls.

Authorities say the men broke into the home of Dr. William Petit Jr. and held the family hostage for several hours. One of them forced Hawke-Petit to make a withdrawal at a bank later that morning, triggering suspicion among bank employees, police said. Police rushed to the house, found it on fire and encountered the suspects fleeing. The two were arrested after crashing the Petits’ car into police cruisers.

But, but… Aren’t we constantly told that nobody needs guns to defend themselves and that if you just give the goblins what they want, nothing will happen? Just co-operate, right? If you defend yourself you’re just asking for it, right?

Tell that to Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters Hayley, 17 and Michaela, 11 (who, by the way, was sexually molested as well, along with her mother).

A perfect example of a case where the death penalty is entirely too kind and lenient for the perpetrators.

:em08: I’ve been telling the Mrs. there’s a new kind of extra-animalistic criminal out there in increasing numbers. The Knoxville horror, this, jeez-louise, there’s just no margin for error in dealing with criminals, particularly burglars/home-invaders, carjackers, and any perps against younger vics. It’s really chafing around my house that my 13 and 16 yr. olds can’t get concealed carry licenses, though they could’ve done more to defend our home and their family than any of the poor victims of this latest horror. The worst part is that family members must now be ready, not only to shoot the perp, but to accept that they may have to watch a loved one get it in the process, ’cause the whole household and anyone else these kind of scum encounter are goners if they don’t act immediately. Damn, I’m OK with risking my life for my family, but it’s a new alloy of steel to write off your wife or child to kill the perp who’s holding a gun to their head. Better spend some time practicing head shots-I’m thinkin’ .40 or better through the nose area might be more likely to minimize twitch by severing the brain stem–maybe I should ask Doc Russia. BTW, the scum in jail, from what I’ve heard and from what’s coming out, are so depraved now, that it’s no longer any big deal for them to be “Bubba” or “married” to him–it’s just part of the whole, lower than scum existence. On site extermination is the only solution. :em96:

Up here in Toronto the gangs run free because of our lack of any judges with balls. An 11 year old boy was killed last week while at a birthday party, by a stray bullet from a drive-by. Our socialist cocksucker mayor David Miller, a Harvard-educated elitist, is once again begging for a ban on handguns here.
This attitude actually kills more kids, since it’s diverting the real cause/effect away and letting people get mad at the ones who want to keep their guns.
We have some of the strictest laws in the world against gun crime (although we do miss the death penalty) - but they remain unpunished. So many cops/retired cops here have written angry books about Canadian judges letting violent offenders go. People, for some reason, have this block - this unreasonable, obvious, nonsensical block - that keeps them from criticizing the judges.
In the US, judges are voted in - but here in Canadastan, they’re nominated. The routinely, recklessly, and without any thought whatsoever, let violent offenders back into society - and why shouldn’t they, it’s not their neighborhoods/children at risk.
This crime is proof - the death penalty is not enough. The most angry judge in the world is not enough. The most diligent parole officer is not enough. The fastest police response is not enough. The stigma of being a repeat offender is not enough. “Just giving them what they want” is not enough - these animals can and do enter your home. Arm yourselves. Use big guns. Don’t let the chaos of the moment drown out your duty to your family - do NOT leave the bad guys with a pulse. Don’t even bother calling the cops. Tie the bad guys to a chair in your basement and make it your career to torture them so thoroughly, so painstakingly constant, so never ending, so utterly evil, that you yourself are brought to tears over their suffering every night, for as long as they can stay alive. Torture them beyond the definition of pain, far past the point of agony. Make yourself worthy of HELL by keeping those fucking daughter-raping, mother/wife-killing cowards on the dark edge of death for as long as physically possible. Don’t bury them, leave them for roaming critters. They gotta eat too. How these cops keep from plugging these cowards in a planted-gun situation, I have no idea. They have more strength than I.

This story has disturbed the shit out of me since I heard about it early this week. I cant even begin to imagine what the husband must be going through.

At this point though, does the judicial system really need to get involved? They have an eyewitness, dna evidence, police testimony. What else do you need? Must it go to a trial and cause these fuckers to take even more from society?

They add nothing whatsoever to this world. Infact all they, and their sicko buttbuddies like them, do is take and take and take from society. So heres what we do. Drive them out into some field somewhere. Have a little kangaroo court in the car on the way there and tell them theyve been found guilty of crimes against humanity. Once there, make them dig their own graves, put a .45 into their left eye and double tap. Bury them and dont even mark the graves. Let them rot as the unknown useless sacks of meat they are.

But yes, one must have the proper mental state. Only you can decide that. I live in NYC, close by. The father is a leading endocrinologist at a hospital.

These 2 lowlifes are career criminals. They have rap sheets a mile long. They’ve served time and were OUT ON PAROLE.

Here’s what the NY Times said:

Mr. Hayes, bald and stocky, was presented in court about 10:45 a.m. The bail commissioner spent several minutes reciting 26 previous convictions going back to 1980 that included burglary and weapons charges.

The defendants were each charged with one count of sexual assault in the first degree. The police said that each man had sexually assaulted a different female victim.

One neighbor, who did not want to be identified because she was afraid of repercussions, said that when Mr. Komisarjevsky was in his early teens, he used to be seen in Army fatigues in a wooded part of the property, and that he had shown up in the local police blotter about five years ago. By the age of 14, prosecutors have said, Mr. Komisarjevsky had begun burglarizing houses, and in 2002 he was convicted of breaking into homes in Bristol with the aid of military night-vision goggles. He was armed with a knife and wore latex gloves, stealing electronic items while his victims slept, they said. At the time, Judge James Bentivegna of Superior Court called Mr. Komisarjevsky “a cold, calculating predator,” and sentenced him to nine years in prison, according to The Hartford Courant.

NINE YEARS IN PRISON - BY MY ARITHMETIC, THAT MEANS UNTIL 2011. WHAT’S HE DOING OUT IN 2007?

Investigators do not believe that the suspects had made a target of the Petits for any particular reason, said Lt. J. Paul Vance, a State Police spokesman. “It appears to be a random incident,” he said.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/27/nyregion/27slay.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion&oref=slogin

As for the shooting of Russell Timoshenko. that was 4 black lowllifes, also career criminals, and the leader, the big fat guy, was determined never to go back to prison.

That’s why I’m not so enthusiastic about guns as you are. They’re too available to criminals here. And there have been many cops shot.

    Caveman
Actually, they fascinate me. I did shoot one once and enjoyed it. I would love to own several, although there is no self-defense need here. It sounds like such fun to go target shooting. I think I would really get into it. I would have to lie on the form to buy one, although I could sneak in under the radar. With my condition, it’s really not a good idea for me to have a gun, unfortunately. It’s a medical decision, not just mine. Plus, I made that annoying promise to my husband that I would never buy one, and I don’t think I can get it rescinded.

People were giving me gun alternatives on a previous thread, and a particular machete was suggested. I’m not very coordinated–I would probably hurt myself with it. I thought about ordering it, but spouse would think I had gone off the deep end, which could be worth it right there! The only thing I own is this really feeble knife from Cheaper than Dirt. (previous owner of the house used to get it). Now I’m getting this perverse urge to collect metal weapons. might have to explore that.

Precisely. Near contact or contact. In other words, let them do something you really shouldn’t do. Get close. By preference, you should engage a target as far away as practical.

For me the sad reality is if I intend to shoot someone, I also intend to kill them. I don’t like it, but that remains the way it is. Not to be taken lightly, not to wound and get sued, not to permit anyone to harm my family, especially in my own home. This is also why the least powerful gun I own is a .45. This small town hasn’t had a murder in over ten years. Last year, just outside of town, two cranksters amped outta’ their skulls got in a fight over a water bill and one shot the other. But here in town the last killing was a drunk estranged husband breaking into his wifes hosue two blocks down the street from here, directly across the street from the police station. He shot his kids, she fled towards the police station and was shot dead in the street. In broad daylight. He was later killed by police officers. If she had only owned a gun….and I live in a low crime neighborhood, largely because my neighbors won’t put up with that shit, a sentiment I share.

Ironically, the one murder in the 3 years I have lived here would not have happened if the guy did not have a gun. It would just have been a fight. It was a road rage thing. One punched the other, who grabbed his gun and killed the guy who had hit him. manslaughter–31 years. That’s why I’m never too happy about people carrying guns around (alright not you guys)–too many hotheads. I think having them in your house is a different story.

The other murder before my time was a female ex-lover who burst in and killed them both (in an adjacent city). Aside from their infrequency, both were personal situations. There don’t seem to be home invasions.

That’s awful when people shoot their kids, and it happens so often.
    ——-
Okay, law enforcement people. What should I have done? There was a screaming fight on the sidewalk next door. She was crying and yelling at him for making her fiance think she was cheating on him. I thought I should go down and see if she was okay (I don’t care about personal harm), but I wasn’t sure if either would want me to intervene. She apparently lives somewhere else now, and mentioned her really sweet dog that is left outside all the time and ignored. I was wondering if I should offer to take the dog for a bit–it would get much better care, but ours is a little snarly with it. It didn’t sound like there were any threats, so I didn’t intervene. Was that reasonable, or should I have tried to intervene?

Fortunately Connecticut is a ’shall issue’ state and no doubt Hoffman’s is doing some good sales business about now.

They certainly are, along with every other gun store in the state. The usual suspects are expressing dismay and tsk-ing that people should be so foolish as to want to defend themselves. And the testicle-impaired Attorney General has yet to say one word in public about the case; he left it to the New Haven DA to handle all the communications.

If you are looking for a good piece of combat steel without dropping a lot of money for it, do a search on the ‘Net for “CETME bayonet”.

The last ones I got in were made in Toledo, Spain, would take a VERY good edge, and are intimidating as all Hell. They were also about six bucks each at wholesale. You should be able to find them for ten-fifteen bucks delivered in quantity one.

They have a good sheath supplied with them which fits both standard belts and old style US Army pistol belts. This could be useful if you have a hankering to do any hiking. Just go to Wal-Mart and buy an “Army Canteen with Belt” from the sporting goods department. These come with a grommeted belt which will take the supplied sheath attachment.

Wow! That’s one scary looking knife. I think I’m sold. Spouse will not love my acquiring weapons, but I generally do as I please (except that he won’t let me get more dogs, a cat, a parrot or buy a gun). The man is the epitome of evil!

Would I want the leather sheaf or the nylon-glass filled one? I guess you’re supposed to wear a belt, huh? I was going to get Doc Marten boots. maybe it would work with them. I guess you can’t wear them around generally, can you? I’m sure the university would have a fit if I came to the lab wearing a hunting knife. I could always keep it in my backpack, but does it count as a concealed weapon? Not that anyone is likely to go through my backpack.

I have the leather sheath, but mine is an outdoor knife and I don’t think nylon-glass is pliable enough to tie around my ankle. When I’m not toting it around fishing, it fits very well in the map pocket on the inside of my car door, within easy reach if I need it for anything.

While I do have two pistols, I just am not comfortable with the idea of having one on my person all the time…not that I’m afraid of them, it’s just something that I don’t want to do that’s all. But I do carry the .45 with me if I go wayyyyy up in the hills on fishing trips, you never know who lives up there and how long they’ve been away from other humans. The woods are also full of big cats and dogs and lions and tigers and bears…oh my. Have surprised a few while walking the rivers.

I wouldn’t go that far, hon. I study a lot, Crunchie would be an example of an expert.

Do you have to be strong to efficiently use these things?

Grip strength is more critical than arm strength. Speed comes in handy, too. But, most important is a willingness to USE the thing.

There’s a lot of jokes about “don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”. However, as Harry Won Kenobi, (don’t ask, let’s just say that he looks a bit like Yoda!), reminds us, “You can get away with it, you just don’t let them know that it’s gonna be a fight until they get close!”

The two rules I was always taught about knife fighting:
    1) Inflict the maximum trauma in the minimum time. (Think: “Scream and Leap, Hack and lash, Fight Dirty. And remember, you are not a member of Ceasar’s Legions. Use the edge, not the point!”)^*

    2) If you get into a knife fight, you have to get close enough to hit them, which means they can hit you. You WILL take damage if they have one too!

    I’m kind of a weakling.

Willingness to get in close and slice away is more important than physical strength.

^*(The Roman short sword (spatha) was a stabbing weapon, not a cutting weapon. Standard technique for the Legions was to throw javelins (pila) or darts (plumbata) while closing into sword range, then hold the shields (scuta) up and stab up underneath them in an underhand motion. The trouble with this (for you) is that you are NOT using a Legionaire’s spatha, you are using a knife. It doesn’t open the massive wound channel that the spatha does, and is not too great at staying in one piece if you stick it into bone and have to pry it out. You also don’t have a guys on either side of you holding Scuta up to keep the other side off your back if you get it stuck.)

Fulton Armory has some, but they are not an inexpensive part. Scary what Garand prices have done in the last few years. I came out ahead fifteen years ago when I sold my last Garand for $350.00! If I had realized what they were going to do, I’d have been buying them up like crazy!

Correct bayonets seem to be any of the 1905 pattern, or the WWII issue M5A1. Obviously, the earlier pattern goes for more money and is harder to find.

    You might also try Numrich

The KA-BAR is a wonderful piece of steel, Boss. My brother still has the one that our father was issued in 1939…

Okay, first, check and see what your local laws are. (Ask an attorney that specializes in self-defense/firearms laws, NOT a cop.)

California STATE law says that anything supported by the belt is cool. But that local laws may supercede this.

How many parts does that Garand have?

A lot. But not as many as some other weapons. Also, keep in mind that Fulton sells all of the little bits that you never even really think about as an owner. Normally a Garand, (or other military rifle), is stripped to sub-assemblies.) eg. trigger group, barrel and receiver group, stock group, bolt group.

Now, I know that the above is techno-babble for you, if you are interested in learning more about the subject, I would suggest finding a copy of Edward Ezell’s “Small Arms of the World”. If you get a copy, block out a few days for absorbing it. (The book is about three inches thick and full (8×11) sized.) With a good binding, it would serve as a weapon all by itself. :em99:

This is a subject that is far too involved to be covered in a blog post. I have customers come in and ask me about a particular weapon, or bring in something that they can’t identify so that I can tell them what it is. When I answer the question, or tell them what they have, they invariably ask “How do you know all this stuff?” followed by “How can I learn all this?”. I tell them to spend thirty years studying the subject, buying guns, selling guns, fixing guns, looking at guns…

About then their eyes go blank and they say “Never mind.”

Firearms are a complex subject, and we never manage to learn all there is to know about them. They’ve been around for nearly seven hundred years now, and have been making major changes for most of that.

There are people that know the subject better than I do around here, (Masterguns comes to mind), if you ask him, you’ll get something close to the same answer, (only I think with a longer time span quoted…)
