Spam

In my ongoing battle against spam, I have found yet a new version of it: Registration Spam.

Like its other infestations, spambots have started to flood weblogs with fake user registrations. I have been getting a lot of new registrations from anton00@phreaker.com or something similar. They are starting to infest the membership lists, and before you know it, it gives the spammer an open door to your blog.

Well, no more.

I have installed the next generation of Anti-Spam. Actually, it is probably the most simplest of all of the anti-spam solutions.

It is called Trubar 4.0(Silent), and what it does is places a cookie on your computer before you start writing a comment. Then, when you submit the comment through POST, it checks to see if that cookie is on your computer. If it is, you can post. If not, well, you know…

Why the cookie?

Most spam is sent through SPAMbots. SPAMbots cannot collect and retrieve cookies. The cookie is set when you take your mouse and click it in the text area for the comment. SPAMbots not only don’t see the textarea, they don’t have mice.

In order for you to register or post comments here, you must have javascript and cookies enabled. If you use your computer for online banking, then you are good-to-go, because this is exactly the same thing online banking sites are doing.

If you have any problems, you can email me, or leave me a comment. (unless you are using a Hosting Matters email because they are blocking my IP address for mail.)

No anonymous commenting has been turned on for ages to avoid spam. However, if TruBar eliminates the need for it, I’d be more than happy to turn it off again. I never liked turning it on in the first place, but I liked cleaning up spam even less.

So being able to allow anonymous commenting again without being drowned in spam would be an excellent bonus as far as I’m concerned.

Well, the whole point about TruBar is to stop the SPAM :D

    It stops it 100%.

Then your anonymous visitors can post freely.

WordPress.Mu is using TruBar even in more advanced way.
Anonymous can post comments, and all registered users can post articles without waiting for admin confirmation.

You must speak to the guy who installed TruBar. The registration cookies does not get cleaned on registration. They have the same name and value like the posting cookies, and after the registration the user can not read the comments and can not comment if the cookies are not cleaned. In this case the user have the option to clean them by going to cleaner.php, but it does not clean them too.
So, the new registered user got stacked and if he/she doesn’t know how to clean the cookies from the browser will be able to see only the main content of every single (single.php) page without the comments and the comment form.

Good luck, and if you don’t get it, call me :)

DJ Allyn, there is no way for SPAM to go trough TruBar.

I’m not sure what did you do, but one thing you did right: no registration SPAM will go trough.

But you forgot to insert one line in wp-login.php:

    setcookie(’TrBr’, check, time()-30000000);

This line cleans the cookies after the registration.

Then if you got SPAM it is because you did not edit coments.php in your theme directory:

    After <textarea
    hit the Space and insert:
    onmousedown="return trubar8()"

Another thing: I’m not sure why cleaner.php does not clean posting cookies, and I wonder why it does not redirect back to the page when click on the link.

cleaner.php is used when a user clicks in the text area and writes comment but does not post it. On click in the text area the user gets cookies and if the comment is not POST the cookies stay.
TruBar does not allow walking around with posting cookies and when they are detected the comment form “die”. Must go to clean the cookies.

That is to prevent CLEVER spammers giving cookies to the robots and sending them with your cookies in your blog. In that case when the robot enter with cookies in comment.php the page will “die” showing message that posting cookies are detected.

It is kind of personal SPAM for very popular blogs, but it does not work with TruBar.

    Read again the INSTALL file.

This seems like it might be the place for a computer paranoia issue. I was checking one of the Klan sites, trying to find our local group, which I now deeply regret. (VERY happy to know that the government considers them a terrorist group) I ended up downloading a creepy application form, which even asks if you are a government informant!

    1) I’m on a Mac. There was just a security update, so you can’t get malicious code from Word documents. I downloaded a PDF. Do I have to worry about cookies or anything? I guess if I clear all my cookies, I mess with my credit card info access and stuff?

DJ Allyn I was pinged by http://www.liberaltopia.org/?p=539 with the complain that TruBar does not work in all three blogs where you installed it and you still get SPAM.

I told you if you need to come and ask me to help you.
Do not call me with pinckback’s, please.

TruBar works in all my Web sites one of which has more than 13 thousand registered users.
The Forums of Truden Web Site are open for anonymous posting, Wordpress.mu is completely open for all (anonymous and registered) users.

The plugin and its technique works.

You have my email in this website.
    Send me the edited files.
I would like to check them and tell you where the problem is.
