LC Radical Redneck alerted us to the spittle-flecked ravings of the GlueHuffers™ concerning the tragic collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis. Let’s take a quick look-see at just a smattering of the Einsteinian “logic” from a few of the Kosmically KlueFucked Kostard Kousins™, shall we?

Diego: Why not blame Bush?

Ipanema: I agree that we should blame the Idiot in Chief! After all, he decided to spend billions on the Iraq fiasco, which could have been spent on fixing the crumbling infrastructure in the US. Chalk another crime by the Decider (his rap sheet is getting rather long)!

eurydice: An obvious Karl Rove maneuver. The administration is finally beginning to fall apart. Gonzales is falling, Cheney about to tumble…
What does the Bush Administration do now?
Blow up a bridge! In a liberal American city. Distract attention from them. Michael Chertoff’s warnings don’t work, so blow up a bridge. It’s all the networks are covering now.
Good move, Karl Rove!

The helmet-wearing, short bus-riding retards grab the first quickly-scribbled article that gives them what they think is Teh Truth™ that they need to nail ShrubCo & His Merry Marauding KKKabal™ and try to run with it:

Grunty1: Not to mention that bridge was marked as “structurally deficient” back in 2005, scoring 50% where less than 80% requires repair work and anything less than 50% marks it for replacement.

lisakaz: Yep. Including, apparently, not informing the state (I presume that inspection was federal, given it’s an interstate). After all, the low score “didn’t mean that the bridge is unsafe,” Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said. Way to go, Mary. Gee, do you think the bridge is unsafe now, perhaps? Maybe this dope oughta be impeached or whomever let that score go by w/o doing a damn thing.

How much do we bet that NOTHING was done about?

The predictability of the ClueDeficient™ fucktards who regularly post there wasn’t Earth-shattering, to say the least. What WAS truly stunning was how quickly their bong-addled delusions of a HalliBusHitlerCheneyBurton Neo-KKKon KKKabal KKKonspiracy™, among other similarly moronic Blame BushCo!™ memes, were destroyed by none other than that Eeeevil ReichWing Media Machine™, The Asphyxiated Press™.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota officials were warned as early as 1990 that the bridge that collapsed into the Mississippi River was “structurally deficient,” yet they relied on patchwork repairs and stepped-up inspections that unraveled amid a thunderous plunge of concrete and automobiles.

“We thought we had done all we could,” state bridge engineer Dan Dorgan told reporters not far from the mangled remains of the span. “Obviously something went terribly wrong.”

………

In 1990, the federal government gave the I-35W bridge a rating of “structurally deficient,” citing significant corrosion in its bearings. The bridge is one of about 77,000 bridges in that category nationwide, 1,160 in Minnesota alone.

The designation means some portions of the bridge needed to be scheduled for repair or replacement, and it was on a schedule for inspection every two years.

………

During the 1990s, later inspections found fatigue cracks and corrosion in the steel around the bridge’s joints. Those problems were repaired. (By bolting on steel plates, NOT replacing the metal.—B.) Starting in 1993, the state said, the bridge was inspected annually instead of every other year.

The state of Minnesota had at least 17 years to either properly repair or replace the bridge after it received its first “structurally deficient” rating. The federal government isn’t in the business of building Interstate highways & bridges. They allocate money to the states and the states take care of the building and repairing of said federal highways.

But, would you EXPECT the morons who believe the fetid fecal material that spews forth from HuffingGluePost™ to understand what actually happens in the real world and place the blame where it firmly belongs?

Nah, it’s easier to just Blame Bush!™ than to admit that their local and state pols were too busy lining their pockets and doling out money to welfare sows, in return for their votes, to actually take care of the infrastructure that our federal tax dollars had gone to build and maintain. Katrina anyone?

F.E.T.E.

This little cumgargler needs to go. Our gas taxes and reg fees go into the general fund, not into the roads where they should. It’s more important to give money to the ne’er do wells than actually use it to fix the roads and bridges that people use to go to work to pay the fucking taxes. Now these bastards are gonna use this to come after my wallet.

What the hell does this Cupid Stunt think the inspectors did? Do their inspection and then leave in the dead of night without informing the State Transportation Dept.??? Geez! And even if they had gone off without informing the State…would there not need to be someone in the Minn.Transportation Dept. who should have ASKED for the inspection results???

I’m seriously getting fed up with these Federal Funds Tit Suckers who conveniently forget that they also have a STATE Government that is responsible making sure that the infrastructure INSIDE THAT STATE’S BORDERS are kept operational and are the responsibility of that STATE…regardless of whether or not that infrastructure is Federally funded or not. If that were not the case…then why is it that you can tell you have crossed the state line on the interstate from state to state? Wouldn’t it all be the same mile by mile it if were strictly up to the Feds to keep the interstates operational?

The Federal Government simply gives the States the money for upkeep and it’s up to the States to make sure they put that money where it’s supposed to go.

One of the few reason I have to be proud of L.A. is we, so far, have refused to pony up and give the NFL a free stadium so they can make millions.

Also, a side benefit of living in earthquake country is all our bridges and over crossings have been retrofitted in the last 10 or so years to the newest standards.

There has been for the last three decades an effort by the local members of the DFL (Donk) Party to build a rail-based mass-transit system. Part of this effort involved the practice of deliberately underfunding the construction of maintenance of local highways to give the appearance of legitimate necessity to their rail scheme.

This simply reaffirms in my mind my belief that the word “democrat” is now a synonym for murderer.

I just finished driving cross country on America’s Interstate Highway system. I spent a few HUNDRED dollars on fuel, every drop of which is heavily taxed by local, state and federal governments, reportedly to fund maintenance and expansion of roads and bridges. Why, I even had to pay extra to travel on TOLL roads. What do I get for all the taxes I paid? The suspension on my new truck was hammered, as was my ass and spine. Special Kudos to the State of Louisiana for their continuing excellence in infrastructure neglect that probably knocked 2 inches off my height over the last 49 years due to compression fractures caused by episodic drives on their roads. GWB and Rove caused the bridge collapse? The bastards must have blown it up!!! Gimme a freakin’ break! How stoooopid can a human be without being considered legally brain dead? It wasn’t GWB et al, it was a myriad of politicians diverting cash from infrastructure maintenance and into vote buying (read that “entitlement programs”). It seems the People’s Republic of Minnesota has at least a 17 year track record of ignoring crumbling public roadways in return for funding the socialist paradise.

Hmmm… Years of ignoring dire warnings, ludicrous finger-pointing after the disaster… Katrina “Lite”

Sorry to break this to you, PC. CalTrans is just a marketing name. It’s official designation is still California Departmet Of Transportation. Check the URL:

It appears you still have a dot.

You appear to contend that those in states that don’t use DOT in their DOT name wouldn’t understand the reference. God, perhaps there should be some level of DNA criterion that must be met before people are allowed to breed.

A little eugenics before breakfast? Consider this:

Like it or not, America is subject to the evolutionary pressures of Cultural Darwinism.

We’ve allowed the leftard urban neurotics to flourish, and they, in turn, have created fertile ground for all manner of dysfunctional societal parasites and saprophytes to flourish. The result is a steady decay of our culture and ability to compete with other emerging and more dangerous cultures. Left unchecked, this madness will eventually erode away what made America great and result in the demise of our culture.

    Sounds like we are “de-evolving.”

B.C. IT, please see below blurb from ABC News earlier this week.

Weekly World News, the newspaper of record for the deranged, announced this week that it was folding on Aug. 3, leaving Bat Boy, Zombie Elvis and P’lod, the extraterrestrial who had an affair with Hillary Clinton, homeless. No reason was given by American Media for shutting down the almost-entirely fictional, magnificently trashy supermarket tabloid, though declining circulation was suspected. Launched in 1979, the rag somehow managed to beat the rest of the news media to scoops like “Oprah to Replace Lincoln on $5 Bill,” “12 Senators Are From Outer Space” and “Pope Wants Mel Gibson as Successor.”

    ohio right wing nut

Do you remember 20 years or so ago..A similar accident in Ohio? I was still in highschool…1984 I belive it was, a span collapsed near Youngstown. The McCartney Road Bridge ring a bell?? No deaths thankfully, but a couple folks got hurt.

For those of you who have never visted Ohio..the roads there are among some of the worst I’ve ever drove on, it’s brutal come spring, car eating pot holes, cracked and broken cement from the harsh winters, and just generally miserable driving almost year around. By Time ODOT gets around to fixing them winter sets in and undoes all thier work in a matter of months…its a big viscious circle.

Funny tho, back then… there were no calls for Regans Head on a platter..there was no screaming for the Feds to DO SOMETHING no one blamed anyone..the bridge was old, it collapsed, shit happens….mind you the entire Mahoning Valley had just went through the US Steel plant shuting down, and several smaller mills going belly up and was harshly introduced to membership into the “Rust Belt” Unemployment if memory serves was a staggering almost 15%. If anyone would should of been looking for Federal handouts it should of been those folks.

Ohioans back then just sort of shrugged said “damn that really sucks”..and rebuilt the bridge..

    Ahhh the good old days..LOL.

Okay, here is my unsolicited take on all of this:

There are a lot of people to blame — no one party or person.

As you pointed out, there were seventeen years worth of inaction or indifference from just about everyone.

That idiot, Jesse Ventura could also share a portion of the blame.

Ipanema: I agree that we should blame the Idiot in Chief! After all, he decided to spend billions on the Iraq fiasco, which could have been spent on fixing the crumbling infrastructure in the US.

Yes, Bush should share some of the blame in this. But the billions of dollars being spent on Iraq are an off-budget cost, using money we are borrowing mostly from Red China, that our kids and their kids will be paying back — probably through tax increases.

But the immediate clown to share the lion’s share of the blame is the Republican governor, who kept vetoing legislation that would have gone to maintenance the highway system.

There are probably thirty or forty things we could be impeaching Bush and the rest of his cabal for — pick one. But it will never happen.

One of the possible causes of the bridge failure is the use of brine solutions to de-ice the bridge during the winters.

DJ: I don’t think Minnesota’s got anything on us when it comes to transportation fiascos.

Locally, our little town has just been treated to a $2.2-million-dollar roundabout we didn’t need. This while our roads are in disrepair and while we have one much-needed project that has been “in the works” for years.

But hey, the Transportation “Improvement” Board had some money burning a hole in its pocket. So now we are getting something which 80% (in a recent poll) of our citizens believe is unnecessary. I believe, in fact, that this revision will increase the accident rates at the intersection they are reworking.

In the meantime, our street has been closed down for the entire summer. It will not be reopened again until after school starts. And, since the school is AT the intersection in question, this ought to be a whole lot of fun.

Where does the BDS come in? Well, about a mile from the project they have planted a sign that says “No Thru Traffic”. Make that four signs. I saw them putting up a new one yesterday. Nobody heeds the sign. It has been vandalized three times. The first couple of times it looked as though someone had hit it with a vehicle. The third time, it had obscenities spray painted on the front side and a big “DIE BUSH” painted on the back. It stood for a while with the graffiti, but then it too was gone. Maybe someone ran over it again. WA state has been a liberal stronghold for a long time. Any funding for local projects is done through liberal-run agencies. But yes, I imagine Bush is in some shape or form responsible for the roundabout project. I’m just a stupid conservative, so I can’t see the obvious connections …

As I stated above, Bush can share in a part — a small part — of the blame in all of this. So can Congress, the Governor, and the former Governor of Minnisota. So no, don’t get the impression that I am singling out Bush on this. He is just part of the cast of thousands that share the blame to some extent or another.

We can even go backwards to Reagan Bush Sr, Clinton, and previous sessions of Congress on this too. Money for our highway system and much of our other infrastructure has been systematically cut/ignored/neglected for decades. Money that used to be provided by the feds has been dried up due to the ‘no new taxes’ tirade brought on mostly by conservatives in the past thirty years.

Ironically, ground-breaking for the new $500 million Twins ball stadium was supposed to happen yesterday, not a mile from that bridge collapse. A half-billion dollars that could have gone to keeping up the deteriorating infrastructure in Minnisota.

I-35W is a federal highway, not a state highway, so at least part of its funding comes from the feds.

And Minnesota DOT officials chose to use their funds for cosmetic patch jobs, instead of actually repairing or replacing the bridge in question. The feds provide money for the Interstate system, Dave. They don’t build or maintain it. That job is left up to the states. This is a clear case of LOCAL and STATE government completely dropping the ball. (NOLA levee system, anyone?)

Uh huh. Right. Give it a break. Never in history have we seen such outright lunacy that exists in the BDS crowd. As pointed out elsewhere, the feds provide funding to the states for highway maintenance. Now, which branch of gubmint is responsible for allocation of taxpayer dollars? Congress. The Executive branch presents a budget and the legislative branch does their thing and submits it back to the Exec Branch for approval or veto. Federal Highways funds as allocated, are passed along to the states and that is where the real political volleyball game starts, as the states immediately begin to play three-card monte with the bucks.

Trying to pin the blame on the Feds or exec branch is equivalent to blaming the bank manager that approved your car loan, for your injuries in an accident.

Now the rest of the idiocy spewing forth. “Paying-Back” money for prosecuting the WoT? The left enjoys depicting the gubmint much as a private business that actually creates wealth, and makes loans to operate. You know the meme “We can’t afford tax cuts” as if we were dealing with our personal budget. Spin all you want but the government merely confiscates the funds it wants and spends them as it please. In other words tax revenues are NOT the creation of wealth. So there is NOTHING to pay-back, and economic trading of national debts and manipulating currency markets isn’t the same as “borrowing”. Whadda ya’ think DJ, W has a PRC Mastercard™ that we’re charging the DoD operating budget on?

I don’t recall even the most hysterical retards blaming Reagan for the 1983 Mianus River Bridge collapse. Which by the way, led to major technological improvements in the manner and methods that highway bridges are inspected and maintained. The Connecticut DOT took that one right on the chin.

Oh, now they have dragged the police into it. I wonder how much that is going to add to the cost of the project? Of course, it won’t be figured in since it is paid for out of a different budget, but it’s still an additional cost.

The money from the gas taxes here in Minnesotastan does not go to repair the roads and bridges like it should. Did ya know we are supposed to have the most bike paths and trails in the country? Guess what money paid for it. The new light rail did nothing to alleviate traffic problems and in fact made them worse in the Hiawatha corridor. It is basically a quick ride from the inner city to the airport and MOA. Guess what money paid for it. The donks in this state have created a welfare haven that attracts the ne’er do wells from Chicago and Gary in droves. We are bleeding manufacturing and tech jobs because businesses are taxed at an exhorbitant rate. We have publicly funded colleges spending my tax dollars for special fountains so muzzies can wash their feet. There is a special tax to subsidize that fucking stadium for one of the richest bastards in this state. The donks control this state. Pawlenty vetoed the recent spending bills because we can’t afford to pay more taxes and have more jobs leave the state. The money is there but the donks have the priorities all back-assward.

The comical thing about the BDS comments is that they are really comments about the failure of big federal government–Shrub’s name is just the one on the Oval Office nameplate at the moment. Yet these idiots want the feds to do everything for them and their “constituency”. Irony, meet just plain stupid. I’m waiting with bated breath for the Ohio equivalent of Mama Dee to show up in some crazy get-up and tell congress how she definitely heard “da BOOM BOOM! Ah’ll nevuh fo’get it!”

This is, BTW, nothing like a hurricane event–it is a very localized, discrete failure of a piece of easily inspected engineering. This, like the steam pipe failures in New York and the abysmal state of rail and maritime infrastructure in this country, is a clear indicator of what happens when the feds bleed state and local tax bases dry, then spend the money on bridges to nowhere, meaningless “energy policy”, Big Digs, meaningless Dept. of Education crap, and the whole panoply of social programs and feckless bureaucracy, instead of maintaining essential infrastructure.

Shrub has spent way too much of our tax dollars and soldiers’ lives in the sand box. It’s time to dump that f’er like the stinkin’ litter box it is–I’m not sayin’ cut and run, I’m sayin’ pound it and all its infrastructure back to the stone age–you know, just like it was about 70 years ago. What the f’ was our gummint thinkin’ allowing the saudis to nationalize our oil companies’ investments and why are we still tolerating their BS?

Dried up? *sigh* I’ll post it again JUST in case you were busy and overlooked it…”In Minnesota the apportionment of federal highway funds is slated for an average growth of 7.3 percent.”

    Oy vey.

Everyone is talking apples and oranges here. The increases in highway spending is for NEW construction, not maintaining what we already have.

Not only is this shit expensive to build in the first place, but it is even more expensive to maintain. The older it gets, the more it is going to require to keep it in order. THIS is where we tend to lack in our spending.

Yes, states tend to do ‘cosmetic’ or ‘bandaid’ repairs on our infrastructure, because there just isn’t the money appropriated to do what is really required. IT IS GOING TO COST A BUTTLOAD OF MONEY TO MAINTAIN AND REPAIR OUR INFRASTRUCTURE AND NOBODY WANTS TO RAISE THE TAXES TO DO IT.

We spent forty years building this shit up, and the past twenty-six or so not maintaining it properly. NOW it has gotten so bad that it is going to require a fucking lot of money to fix the estimated 77 THOUSAND bridges that are in roughly the same condition as the I-35W Bridge that collapsed.

Our infrastructure is rotting away and we are all to blame. We all want to drive our asses to work but we bitch if the roads are crumbling underneath our tires. But we grumble louder if we are asked to pay for it in higher taxes.

Maybe you’d all like to have private toll roads. Especially without price controls and government interference.

Do I blame Bush? Yup. Sure. Him and the rest of us for following.

Absolute and unmitigated horse shit, Dave. If you’d bother actually looking at the federal outlays for highway maintenance, instead of blindly spewing your Librul mantra of “TAX THE RICH!”, you’d see that we’ve consistently increased spending for maintenance of the highways.

The REAL problem is, and I know this is going to hurt your widdle Librul ego, that our idiot politicians (of all stripes) have taken the money that’s been collected by THE STATES (gas taxes) and spent it on social(ist) causes (Read: welfare programs) and NOT spent it on what it was meant to be spent on (Read: Road building & repair). That money, on top of what the Feds have been allocating, would have gone a long way towards keeping shit like the bridge collapse from happening.

Not only that, VERY often the money is mismanaged (NOLA ring a bell?)

Here in Nebraska, we have two seasons, road construction and July. Any given day, there are workers just standing around, and there will have a minimum of a dozen places that are torn up waiting for work to be done. Nebraska has some of the highest state taxes in the country, DJ. How much do you think is fair for us to pay? How much more are you willing to pay for do-nothing workers?

Other reason we have crumbling infrastructure is underbidding, shoddy construction, poor materials. We had a problem here several years ago where the company was rushing to get done early, so they wouldn’t pay a penalty. As a result, the work wasn’t being done WELL.

Yeah, blame Bush for everything. That’s the ticket.

The increases in highway spending is for NEW construction, not maintaining what we already have.

To a degree, I can agree with Deej on this. The construction of the brand new “Gov. William J. LePetomaine Bridge” sounds better than sponsoring a bill to upgrade some nasty looking, (but necessary)old bridge or interchange.

Here in Kalifornia, they refused to spend anything outside of the bare minimum on maintenance for over a decade. The law said it could only be spent on roads and they couldn’t get enough votes to rewrite the law to allow them to siphon off the monies.

Good thing too, there was a hefty amount of cash sitting there when, after about the third major earthquake, they figured it was (politically) expedient to do something about retrofitting all the bridges in the state.

    Sir Christopher

The blaze was started July 4 by sparks from equipment repairing a water pipe. To date, the fire has cost about $42.8 million to fight.

People just don’t know when to leave well enough alone. If the pipe kept leaking, no fire :em93:

Thanks–we’ve been monitoring it closely. I’ve got a severe fire phobia, and I really freaked when the wind shifted and they had to start evacuating people and livestock. (They were just letting it burn in the national forest) But the trusty old map showed me it was down south of us. Everything is tinder dry. I hope they were able to save the structures.

There was a nasty fire a few years ago (some asshole tried to burn out his neighbor) that jumped a 6 lane highway and burned quite a ways though SB.
