The Crown Prince, it would appear, has been paying a bit too much attention to his paternal unit’s — idioms.

A few minutes ago, he noticed a great big bloody fly that had apparently made it past the screen door and promptly exclaimed “daddy, there’s a big fly there! Do something!”

To which I, jokingly (it’ll come back to bite me one day, I know), replied “well why don’t you catch it and eat it? Great source of protein, you know.”

And he turned to me and said, trying to spell it the way he pronounced it here, “I’m no’ a flippin’ frog, daddy!”

I guess he really has been hanging around the old man a bit too much.

Tips on how to suppress a sudden urge to laugh hysterically would be most welcome.

Well, Misha, welcome to the paternal world. They are five now, aren’t they? I wish I could impart how I cringed when my four year old daughter asked my mother-in-law what asshole meant. I explained somebody ran a stop sign…….
Or for that matter, when she asked…”Daddy, what’s masturbation mean?”
    “Coming unscrewed, Kiddo…”
“Why is mommy laughing so hard?”
    “Ask your mother.”
Not so bad now, she is in her early twenties. I just try tried to leave comies of Soldier of Fortune and Guns ‘N Ammo out for her potential dates to read….
She got pissed. But she did return home on time.
And Sire…it ain’ over yet. Nossir! You will blow a ‘roid trying to maintain, a facade of stern fleeing in hysterical laughter.
Or the Empress will smile and giggle, blowing your cover to hell and gone, for she will know…..

His favorite, which we would repeat freely to people we didn;t know was “Why does Dr. Pepper come in a bottle? Because his wife died. BWAHAHAHAH!!!”

There is no good way to suppress a laugh like that. Best if you chuckle and then go tell the rugrat to go eat that bug like a man. Then you go do it and tellhim that only libertards and commies aren’t man enough to eat things that’ll make a billy goat puke. Because they won’t eat those things, they’ll die when the shit hits the fan.

Well I don’t have any kids…but after working in Daycare for about 15 years I basically raised everyone else’s.

Chad and Stacy were the best of friends. Three years old and they had already decided that they were going to marry each other when they grew up. They were joined at the hip. I almost always ended up having to separate them to get them to concentrate on the lessons I had to teach each day.

Well one day Chad decided that he wanted a day with the guys. He was ignoring Stacy and it just broke her heart. She kept following him around all morning pleading with him. “Chad PLEASE be my friend again! Chad PLEASE talk to me!” She even had tears in her eyes like any wise female knows how to do.
Finally in total exasperation Chad slams his hands onto his hips, leans over into Stacy’s face and sternly tells her “Look..I’m gonna to marry you, but I ain’t going to be your best friend!”
I had to get up and go out into the hall before I died laughing. :em99: :em99:

One of my daughter’s pet rats had a fly land in his water dish the other day. Later, I picked up the rat and noticed that he had something stuck in his front teeth. It was a fly wing! Sure enough, the fly was missing from the water dish. I should have gone to fish it out sooner. Just didn’t know they’d eat flies. Hope he enjoyed it. He’s a good rat.

They start school this year don’t they?
I have a feeling you will get to know their teachers very well.

Oooh. You do not want to go there. Our youngest had a very PC teacher in kindergarten. How PC? You know that song There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly ? She changed the lyrics so children wouldn’t be traumatized by the old lady’s death. “Perhaps she’ll die” became “Perhaps she’ll sigh”. If you know anything about 5-year-old kids, you’ll know they often relish blood and gore at this age. They are, in fact, often fascinated by death. It’s an interesting developmental note (I read this in one volume of a series of books recommended by our pediatrician). Another interesting comment was that 6-year-olds will frequently fall off their chairs at the dinner table for no apparent reason. I thought this was wierd, but sure enough, ours did this!

When the teacher pulled out her puppets and started singing the song, I could see a number of puzzled faces. Obviously these kids knew the real lyrics and the revision could completely ruin the punch line. Curious as to how she would change: “There was an old lady who swallowed a horse … She died, of course.” (This after not expiring from ingesting a fly, a bird, a cat, a dog, a goat, and a cow.) So she gets to the end, and instead of “She died, of course”, the line became “And that’s all”. Thanks, Porky Pig!

Well, she wasn’t fat, so maybe Porky Pig doesn’t really apply. Although she was sensitive to fat people. “Nine, ten, a big fat hen” was changed to “Nine, ten, a great big hen”. The upshot of all this is she didn’t appreciate it when our boy located Tehran on the globe and informed her we needed to commence bombing it straight away. It also didn’t help that he was reading when he entered school, but was forced to sit down with the rest of the class and relearn his alphabet. We requested that he be allowed to bring a book from home and go read in a corner instead, but were told this would show favoritism. So, we requested a promotion to first grade, but were told we’d have to pull him out and put him in private school for a year first, then have him re-evaluated as to grade placement, and then we could request advancement. That’s when we started home schooling him, sort of. Actually, he takes online classes from another public school district, and we are happy with the arrangement.

I like that one - kids are so realistic - aren’t they - like the Emperor himself, when he was a kid - wish I could translate a good one from kindergarden when he was around 4-5 years old. They had something to eat there - called “svensk pølseret” - Swedish saugages - something like that - sorry the spelling isn’t correct - but anyway - he said to me - when I picked him up:” Mommy - we had “svensk pølseret” to day - and guess what - we ate all the “pølser” - now there’s only the “svensk” left”. I found that very good too.

I for one am stunned, stunned I tell you that you allowed a flu into your home. I won’t call Child Services this time, but be on notice.

Hell, you should have eaten the fly to show him what you had to do in the army(?).

I don’t believe in the “kill all germs” mindset. I watched a prgram today on some channel (it was 5:30 AM, so, no I don’t remember what channel), but the gist was, the more “bad” things you try to eliminate from your day to day life, the more your body won’t recognize from dealing with it on a small level, so now it may kill you.

The Japanese sell phones with impregnated (pick your)cides. In 10 years of not dealing with this little germ, how is the population going to react to a slightly mutated version of the germ?

City kids have more allergies than farm kids because they don’t get out there and stir up the shit to infect themselves and build up immunities.

I was allergic to cats untill my wife insisted I’d go before them :em34: , but after about two years of living with them, I didn’t have problems

Seriously, I have read in a number of places that if you give them a bath once a week, it’s supposed to cut down on the allergan production. Never having had a feline, I don’t know how hard it is to give a cat a bath. I have a postcard of a wet cat dangling with an expression like the devil.

Like you said, the super-obsessive clean people aren’t doing any favors to their kids to not let them get exposed to harmless germs–they don’t build up immunity. The antibacterial soaps should be banned–they wipe out the good bacteria on your body and leave you vulnerable to the bad ones, along with contributing to the spread of drug resistance (plus they don’t work on viruses–you are still vulnerable to cold or flu viruses).

I used to have a friend that was traumatized as a child when her cat would eat her mice or rats. Do you have issues with that?

PC: We have 4 cats, 2 rats, a guinea pig, a psychotic mouse, and a bunch of fish. We keep them all separated. The cats would dearly love to dine on the other pets. Three of them catch voles and mice, but I’ve never found them with anything else. The fourth one caught a dragonfly once. That is the extent of his hunting ability.

When I was a kid, one of our cats killed one of our pet rabbits (a big Rex, no less). Bit it on the head and dragged it off squealing. It happened very fast. The cat came out of nowhere while my brother had his bunny out of the cage. That was very traumatizing, actually.

My oldest son had a bunny for 10 years, a mini Rex named Peter. He was a great little pet. He used to chase the very timid Siamese cat we had. Have you seen this video?

Like you said, the super-obsessive clean people aren’t doing any favors to their kids to not let them get exposed to harmless germs–they don’t build up immunity. The antibacterial soaps should be banned–they wipe out the good bacteria on your body and leave you vulnerable to the bad ones, along with contributing to the spread of drug resistance

This is why natural selection needs to be taught. You just want to grab the ones that take antibiotics for every little bug and shake them. “Hey stupid! Quit helping the germs evolve!!” :em96:

Flip side of that: If you get prescribed antibiotics for something, use the whole course. Even if you feel better, remember that germs honor a cease-fire about as well as palestineans.

Those who half-use antibiotics are as guilty of aiding and abetting germ evolution as those who overuse them.

I would add getting prescribed antibiotics for colds as one of my pet antibiotic peeves. Also that 70% of the antibiotic use in this country is for animals! Can’t they use ones that humans don’t use?

I never understood the not finishing the course of antibiotics thing.

Your kids are lucky. I was afraid to ask for a mammal. Rabbit thing sounds traumatic. That reminds me–I want to get a bunny. There is a bunny program around town to get them adopted. My rat deaths were traumatic. The water bottle for the rats is opaque, and it’s very hard to see if it has water in it, and it didn’t! I didn’t realize it! death by dehydration.

Video is great–person I would like to send it to has a deathly fear of snakes.

    You smart mouthin’ me kid?

    Whack

Gee…Let’s go back to the knowing but detached and strict Daddy.

It’s amazing how far we’ve progressed in such a short time, what 70 years?

Even in my Dad’s days you didn’t have time to crack wise to your father. His Dad was working 12+ hours a day to support 5 kids, who had better be out working for the neighbors, once they were through with their schooling.

I never knew my paternal Grandfather, but his work ethic somehow was passed to me and I’ve tried to pass it on to my kid.

PC: Daughter works at a pet store. Evidently, people can bring in animals they don’t want (up to a point). Guess where they end up? I’ve gotten very attached to the rats, though. They have real personalities. The one follows us around and gives kisses (three quick licks = a rat kiss). Loves to ride on our shoulders and fall asleep on our laps. Right now he is asleep on my arm, so I am typing one-handed.

The House Rabbit Society is a national rabbit rescue group with state chapters. See if they have a couple mini Rexes for adoption near you. We had a mini Rex. He was a pet store purchase, and he made a wonderful pet. I have read that mini Rex rabbits generally have friendly dispositions. Their small size makes them easy to house. And they have the most wonderfully soft fur! They can be box trained - sort of. They naturally prefer to pee in one place, so will use a litter box for that purpose if you place it where they want it. The pooping is another story. They eat their droppings. Because of the way rabbits evolved, in an arid climate where food was sparse, they “recycle” their food by passing it through a second time. (This is one reason you have to be careful with antibiotic use in rabbits. Anything that upsets the bacterial balance in their digestive systems can cause them a lot of grief. Be sure to research antibiotics in rabbits and find a vet who is knowledgeable.) I don’t know if you can get a rabbit to leave all of his marbles in one spot. We didn’t have any luck with that. So, he had a cage, and at times he was on a rug in the laundry room. He stayed on the rug because he didn’t like the feel of the slippery bare floor.

If you do get a rabbit, let me know. I can send along the info I have found, and I’d love to see a picture!

Indoors would be great. I was assuming a cage in the backyard. Our dog is kind of territorial and is a herding breed (Australian kelpie), so that would be interesting to see if he would be hostile or try to herd it. He tries to herd visitors. I wanted to show a friend something on my computer, and he just wasn’t having it. They’re fine in the dining room, and that’s about it.

I’ll keep an eye out for mini Rexes. Thanks for the tip. Had never heard of them. Our local organization is called BUNS. I guess I should wait until after our trip to SF to re-trace the places Hitchcock made his films. There’s a book about it.

I used to have a rabbit that came with half its blood gone. They are great to make antibodies for research, and this one made antibodies to a fungal enzyme. When we moved to Arizona, my mother was neurotic about the rabbit being in the heat. My parents didn’t get along, but both liked the rabbit, so I left it with them. They litter-box trained it, but it got to be a problem when they traveled. They wouldn’t give it back because of our Doberman (which was very gentle). My dad gave it to this monastary that had a petting zoo for ghetto kids. He would visit it every day and bring it wilted lettuce that the store didn’t want. After he died, the monks were very helpful to my mother. It was all kind of odd.

I don’t know if I would trust a dog (even a friendly one or a small one) with a rabbit. I know I wouldn’t with my cats, even the scaredy Siamese I told you about earlier. Instinct is instinct, and food animals are food animals!

The nice thing about bunnies is they are playful. When they are happy, they jump and twist and kick up their heels. In guinea pigs, this is called popcorning. Maybe that is what they call it when rabbits do it too? They are comical to watch.

One thing that works well with rabbits when it’s hot is to take a 2-liter soda bottle, put water in it, and stick it in the freezer. The bunny will snuggle up to it to cool off.

BTW, we had a goofy Doberman when I was a kid. I would like to have one, but right now I don’t want one more thing to clean up after!

That’s a good point. If the dog killed the rabbit, I would be devastated. There will be no natural selection in my house! Even the spiders are left alone.

Somebody gave me a poster of the Ghashlycrumb Tinies, but it’s so conservative around here I might have to hide it in the back of the house. If you’re ever in Cape Cod, they have his house open as a museum! Apparently, he loved animals so much, he let the raccoons rampage freely in his attic. (I’m talking about Edward Gorey–the illustrator)

PC, a conservative person can appreciate talent and art, even if the creator was of a different mindset. Mind you, I said “talent” and “art”; Piss Christ is not art. I can appreciate John Lennon’s music without absorbing the meaning. He was liberal, for sure, and from what I’ve read he could be a real asshole. But, he wrote some good songs. Ditto for a lot of the musical artists from the 60’s. However, now that I’m older, I do pay attention to the messages conveyed by musicians and artists, and I do not buy their work if I think they support what I consider to be harmful causes.

I don’t know anything about Gorey, personally. I just like his drawings and his macabre sense of humor. My favorite is probably the Beastly Baby.

Raccoons are fun to look at, but they’re a pain in the butt to have around. They get into the garbage, carry diseases, and they do kill cats at times. In fact, there was an article last summer about a group of raccoons down near Olympia who were actually hunting for cats and small dogs in a coordinated pack. That’s scary! We were “blessed” with two baby raccoons when I was a kid. My dad was another one for dragging the wildlife into the house (The Canadian goose that ate the tinsel off the Christmas tree and wouldn’t let us near our presents comes to mind!) Raccoons don’t make suitable pets at all, even when bottle fed. Among other things, ours messed with the plumbing (stuffed marbles, Legos, toothbrushes, and God-knows-what-else down the bathroom sink and loved to play in the toilet). They raided the kitchen cupboards and got into food. Ever seen a raccoon that has eaten a whole bag of Oreos? It’s messy in more ways than one. They would sleep during the day and come out and attack our feet at night. We took to going to bed armed with rolled up newspapers and other ‘coon whacking devices - because they could turn doorknobs and get into the bedroom. They especially seemed to enjoy terrorising my youngest brother, who was a toddler at the time. And these were baby raccoons (when they reached maturity, they both ran away from home). Anyway, I don’t know why anyone would invite one to share his house. “Rampage” was certainly an appropriate word to use!

The racoons sounded troublesome in hindsight. A Canadian goose keeping you from your presents! Your life sounds like it’s been more interesting than mine.

I didn’t mean to imply that conservatives can’t appreciate talent and art. However, this one elderly friend has a great sense of humor, but would not appreciate the GT–I’m pretty sure about that. I have a younger conservative friend that loves Edward Gorey. I send her twisted things all the time. Her Christmas card was a large slug crawling on her hand. I even had a younger offbeat liberal friend with a child say that it wasn’t for parents, although my spouse likes it, and he has kids. I found a set of postcards once, and my boyfriend was called George. I sent him the “G is for George smothered under a rug.”

PC: I love it! We have Amphigorey here somewhere. I’ll have to go look at it again. Not for kids? Depends on the kids. Mine think it’s hilarious. But then they’re twisted little spawn. Don’t know if that’s hereditary or environmental. Either way, they were doomed.

Humor is an interesting thing. I had an elderly friend who didn’t understand what I thought was so funny about Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side. I do believe that is because what is considered funny can change over the course of time. Her frame of reference was different from mine. If you try to explain why you think it’s funny, that really sucks the humor out of it! My dad used to get some psychology periodical that had a joke analysis section in it. I think this was just an excuse to put dirty jokes in a professional publication, under the guise of intellectualism.

About humor, we see dark films normally, and we are often the only people laughing in the theatre. The Simpsons movie is hilarious, and often only a couple people were laughing. I never liked “The Far Side” that much because I was spoiled with Gahan Wilson, who is darker. Speaking of twisted, hunt some of his books down if you aren’t familiar with them. They are hilarious. I will see if I can get spouse to check if any are still in print (involves bludgeoning and e-mailing). There is a book called “I Paint What I See” with the cover of a man looking at a beautiful lake and painting the lake with all these monsters. A little girl asks him why he’s painting that: “I paint what I see.”

Anyway, I’m writing because there is a second Amphigorey book. I bought one at a used book store, not realizing we had it already. I wasn’t sure what to do with it. If you want it, I’d be happy to mail it to you. If you don’t catch this post, I may bring it up again. tetrodotoxin2 yahoo

Thanks, PC, but we have it. We have Amphigorey in paperback and a hardbacked copy of Amphigorey II. Have you ever seen any of Gary Faigin’s artwork? He does these still lifes with fruit that are just funny. There is one which shows a bowl of fruit sitting serenely on a window sill in front of a large window. If you look beyond, out the window, there are factories burning, people stampeding, and general chaos. I’ll see if I can find a link.

I don’t know how hard it is to give a cat a bath.

Trust me, PC, it’s hard. The howling, the fighting, it’s quite a feat to get out of it alive. We’ve had to give all three of our cats a bath at least once. Our oldest, Natalie, got it twice-once when she got skunked and had to be bathed in tomato juice, and the second time for fleas. Figaro and Smokey got it once for fleas. Now they freak out whenever we bring them near a sink.
