Strangely silent since last month’s LiveEarth flop, the one, the only vessel of all things scientifically credible, the Goreacle of Wormening™ finally speaks. We were beginning to wonder in this shop, if he had found a 24/7 buffet that his handlers couldn’t pry him away from.

But, alas we were wrong and he pops up again, adding a new word into the lexicon for those of us out here that still aren’t buying his bullshit, along with ‘denier’ we’re now propagandists. I’m still waiting for my check from Exxon/Mobil though.

Well, let’s pick up with the purveyor of putrid scientific swindles in Singapore.

Gore: Polluters Manipulate Climate Info

Research aimed at disputing the scientific consensus on global warming is part of a huge public misinformation campaign funded by some of the world’s largest carbon polluters, former Vice President Al Gore said Tuesday.

“There has been an organized campaign, financed to the tune of about $10 million a year from some of the largest carbon polluters, to create the impression that there is disagreement in the scientific community,” Gore said at a forum in Singapore. “In actuality, there is very little disagreement.”

I wonder what Tune they’re playing during the financing? So a paltry $10 million is being spent by all the eevil kkkorporations to make a dent in the lunacy and economic suicide pact, that you’ve built an entire platform on. Not content to have control of virtually every major media outlet, the UN and huge number of academic asshats, you feel the need to muzzle the opposition.

Gore likened the campaign to the millions of dollars spent by U.S. tobacco companies years ago on creating the appearance of scientific debate on smoking’s harmful effects.

We’re quite aware of that effort, the original one where big tobacco refused to admit nicotine was addicting and studies indicated that smoking is bad for you health. But the more recent one on the harmful effects of second-hand smoke has been throughly debunked, although you wouldn’t know it from the Tobacco Nazi’s endless war to keep anyone from engaging in a legal habit. *Pausing to light another Kool* Be careful on the materials you’re building a straw man with there Al.

“This is one of the strongest of scientific consensus views in the history of science,” Gore said. “We live in a world where what used to be called propaganda now has a major role to play in shaping public opinion.”

Absolutely, 100% of the pews in the Church of Gore are in agreement. In the rest of the world almost daily studies are creating cracks in “the strongest consensus”. The propaganda bit is interesting though, almost Freudian, as that is exactly the technique being used to sell the public and government on this whole issue. Along with threats of professional credentials being pulled from ‘deniers’, censure and general black-balling of the few honest scientists now coming forward. A long time ago, there was quite a bit of ’scientific’ consensus that the earth was flat. History seems to be repeating itself here, replete with the attacks on anyone questioning the veracity of your hypothesis. The only thing lacking is an inquisition, but nobody expects the Goreacle inquisition.

After the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, made up of the world’s top climate scientists, released a report in February that warned that the cause of global warming is “very likely” man-made, “the deniers offered a bounty of $10,000 for each article disputing the consensus that people could crank out and get published somewhere,” Gore said.

The IPCC gift that keeps on giving. They like to point out that 2,500 scientists signed the report. What’s not said is that each of those only reviewed a particular portion of the report, not necessarily concurring with the conclusions. Moreover, quite a few of the signatories have asked to have their names removed with litigation in process. Another credible source has 18,000 signatures in the scientific community on a petition against the Kyoto Protocols. Lawrence Solomon writing for the Financial Post began a study of ‘Deniers’ and turned up some interesting statistics: They call this a consensus?

“They’re trying to manipulate opinion and they are taking us for fools,” he said.

So what would you call your cheap power-point crockumentary “An Inconvenient Truth”, if not a vehicle for manipulating opinion? What’s good for the goose and all doesn’t apply in the World According To Gore, eh?

He said Exxon Mobil Corp., the world’s largest publicly traded oil company, is one of the major fuel companies involved in attempting to mislead the public about global warming.

Last year, British and American science advocacy groups accused ExxonMobil of funding groups that undermine the scientific consensus on climate change. The company said the scientists’ reports were just attempts to smear Exxon Mobil’s name and confuse the debate.

Considering the hundreds of millions of dollars spent to parrot the AGW crowd, along with ever more off-shoot ’studies’, it’s now somehow dishonest to fund research that happens to arrive at a different conclusion.

Gore said that with growing awareness of climate change, the world will see an acceleration in efforts to fight the problem, and urged businesses to recognize that reducing carbon emissions is in their long-term interest.

The only thing growing is the lunacy of some proposed solutions. Try this one on for size: ‘Sunshade’ for global warming could cause drought’ Those morons propose pumping sulfur into the atmosphere to create an atmospheric sun-shade. That would be the same sulfur (in dioxide) form that billions of dollars have been spent on eliminating from coal-fired generating plants.

But while Washington should lead by example, he said developing nations also have to play a part.

“Countries like China, just to give an example, which will next year be the largest emitter in the world, can’t be excluded just because it’s technically a developing country,” Gore said. “When you look at the absolute amount of CO2 each year and going forward, China will soon surpass the U.S.”

I’m sure the Chi-Comms will be falling all over themselves signing up for your plan Al. The Reds go Green, would make for some fun headlines though.

Gore said that as the Asian giant’s economy expands, China faces an increased risk from climate change and must leapfrog old, polluting technologies while maintaining growth.

The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency said in June that China overtook the United States in carbon dioxide emissions by about 7.5 percent in 2006. China was 2 percent below the U.S. in greenhouse gas emissions in 2005, the agency said.

Maybe you should put regularly scheduled visits to Beijing on your calendar. We’ve noticed your visits often bring extraordinarily cold weather. You might even get a free copy of the Chairman’s Little Red Book out of the deal.

Immediately following his statement, The Goreacle modeled his latest line of designer clothing, it’s all carbon-neutral and provides the wearer with protection from all environmental hazards:

sulfur chemistry–the sunshade thing does sound a little psycho, but I think you are wrong about the sulfur they want to pump being the air polluting sulfur dioxide. SD is SO2. Thanks for your insight into academia. The mainstream scientific community considers the global warming theory to be the predominant theory. (And strangely enough, most do not stand to benefit financially.) Don’t give me the Marxist shit–the sciences are not full of raving Marxists–20 years–4 universities–2 summers at DuPont–never met one in the sciences (I’m sure there are a few). I don’t think I can link because it is subscription based (I have one, and the U has one). I would be happy to send or fax you a review or two from “Science” magazine–or is that too left-wing for you? I guess I could create a PDF. (That offer goes for anybody.)

By the way, it’s way old news that EM has spent millions funding groups to oppose global warming. Even the junkscience site (which is interesting) traces back to EM. (That does not mean that every criticism is invalid.)

I don’t follow Al Gore; I don’t get my science from him; and I haven’t seen the film. I’ve never bought a carbon offset.

    >The mainstream scientific community considers the global warming theory to be the predominant theory.

Maybe. Maybe not. We hear global warming addicts saying that, but we never get a definition of this so-called “mainstream scientific community.” We also never see any real evidence that humans have had any meaningful effect on it, if it’s even happening. And we haven’t seen any evidence that it is happening in any way that is different from the rising and dropping of temperature that has been happening for thousands of years. And we never get any rational explanations of why there are so many places in the world that are getting colder, and glacial layers that are getting thicker, and snow everywhere Albert Gore goes to preach his hysteria.

As a person involved in science, PC, you should be especially aware that the so-called “mainstream scientific community” has been dishing out bad information, bad research, bad science for, well, ever. And I still haven’t seen any evidence that scientists that are qualified in relevant fields, on the whole, support the assertion that there has been 1) any type of abnormal climate change, or 2) any significant contribution of human activity to the creation of such abnormal climate change. Pretty much the only people I hear promoting, with any degree of conviction, such unsubstantiated and bizarre ideas are people who have some type of emotional investment in them.

“Follow the money” is usually good advice, but I think that “Follow the emotion” is even more accurate in finding the source of modern fads, “scientific” or otherwise.

Well, I said I didn’t want to argue. I’m trying to figure out how close this fire is. But you are not argumentative. Yes, there has been bad science. The work of James Hansen seems particularly credible, although the junk science guy says he found an error in one of his calculations. If you google him, you can get some of his talks and data slides. Weather extremes are predicted–both hot and cold. The CO2 shoots off the map starting in 1900. The prediction for drought and fires on the West Coast is on the mark. It’s supposed to be the Mediterannean, too, but I don’t know if that is happening.

I’m thinking very poorly right now–I’m too flipped out and overwhelmed. Normally, I love discussing with you. You are always so civil, and your arguments are so well-reasoned.

I’m not a crusader for global warming–I don’t discuss it with my non-scientific friends. I don’t have an argument with you–you have logical counter-arguments–great! I just get annoyed about sucker or mush brain type comments for people who are stupid enough to believe it. That’s why I stress the mainstream scientific community. That doesn’t mean it’s right, but it does suggest that people who are not idiots consider it a valid theory.

I forget what it was called, but there was some plant hormone that people studied for decades that turned out to be an artefact. It does happen, and modeling is hard.

Wow–I’m feeling better! Thanks. Mental things can be such a good distraction.

They are in dire need of one. When I get more of a grip, I would like to discuss it with you. Could we do it via e-mail? I would be more comfortable, since C/D comparisons get so contentious. 1) Science by “consensus” is not science. Science is NOT a democracy. Facts are slippery things, and really don’t give a flying damn what I, you, or 56% of Climate “Scientists” think about them.

    2) If this crap were actual science, then a debate about the theories, conjectures and results would be welcome. Whenever a supposed “expert” tries to muzzle the opposition, it a sure sign that someone is trying to put one over on you.

    3) Look at the models they are using. None of them can take the last ten years of data and predict today. None of them allow for precipitation or variable cloud cover. The data collection points are uncontrolled (One, for instance is on the roof of a building in Manhattan. The roof was changed from medium grey gravel to black tar several years ago, and the date is still being used. Raw.) The computer model being used also intentionally cooks the data, and produces the “hockey stick” no matter what date it is given.

    4) Surprisingly, all of the models also discount entirely the effect of the big ball of glowing hydrogen we have in the sky, treating it’s output as a constant. It isn’t, and we are in a period of solar high temps. The sun is called a variable star for a reason.

    guys
-I have said a number of times that I don’t deal with Al Gore. I don’t get info from him. I have not seen the film. I don’t worship him. To me, he is a pesky being that makes my life more difficult.

    Fanusi
I like your argument. You can definitely believe parts of an argument, but not the whole thing. That’s great that you read “Nature”-I guess in your location you would read that rather than “Science,”

By, the way you never answered my subsequent post on the child molestor thread.

    Wil
Remember the post that said I didn’t want to argue because I was freaked out that my house might burn down? Well, now I’m more freaked out. I’m trying to put my energy into figuring out everything to take.

BUT. I did sign the petition for Gore to debate. Actually, the stuff I was reading lately incorporated the sun’s increased activity. They aren’t my calculations, but the CO2 calculations really do suggest that they are from man’s activity. If I weren’t half dead, I would link to the data showing them going through the roof.

Actually, consensus is very important. First there has to be good data, then there is the theory, then there is rebutting. Then there is rebutting of the rebutting, etc. Then at some point there is a consensus that the theory is correct, and then it becomes the truth and ends up in text books. Trust me–I do know what I’m talking about. The global warming theory has not reached the truth point.

But you know, I really don’t care if you don’t believe man has affected global warming. It’s your opinion based on your reading. (I don’t mean that I don’t care what you think–just that I don’t feel the need for you to agree with me.) All I ask is that you don’t consider everyone who believes in it a total idiot (there is probably some proportion of them). That was actually the reason for the post. I hate posting on global warming. I’m not very argumentative, and this is guaranteed for a passionate response.

What I would strongy argue is the freedom/money thing. If vehicles were more furl efficient, that would save you money. Using the compact fluor bulbs saves you money. It will cost some to modify the power plants, but with increasing green technologies, we should be able to generate power more cheaply and create new industries from the research. Yum. And go nuclear, I say. How on earth is that taking away our freedom? You can still buy an SUV. No one is making us make changes to our houses. If you can get back to me at some point, and I’m not evacuating, I am curious about your arguments for that. Apparently, there is something I am massively missing, since it seems to be a common point.

Here’s a good one. I was looking at some other sites last night after seeing this post, and on one site someone brought up the increased temperatures on Mars and Jupiter. Another commenter claimed that there had to be some other explanation for those than Solar irradiance, becase, he said, if that were true, because Earth is closer to the sun, our temperatures would have gone up so much that we would all be dead already.

Fanusi makes a great point. Global warming and cooling has happened throughout history. I personally have no doubt that this is fact. I also have no doubt the most of the scientific community (as well as most rational thinkers) would believe in and admit this.

The hype point - and hence Gore’s Bullshit Angle™ - is that this is somehow man-made. That gives him the ability to: play to liberal guilt; peddle his books/concerts/offsets; and soothe his sore-loser ego.

If Gorephiles are so interested in reducing their carbon footprints, let’s shut down all of the organic foods stores - just imagine what the carbon footprint of a Whole Foods Market is! We should convince them that, in order to live a carbon neutral lifestyle, they should not consume any food containing carbon. Natural selection will kill of those stupid enough to be true believers, and society’s collective IQ will increase by a point or two.

    Psychochick:

Before anything else, let me say that you and yours are in my prayers regarding the fires. BT,DT, and it major league sucks. May the Grace of God protect.

Be calm (centering yourself does help) and sort into two piles; What can be replaced (most clothing, for instance) and what cannot (wedding photos, the kids, etc.). Pack the second pile, then add the things you think you will need for the next two days from the first. In the left over room in the two Priuses (Prii?) then add nice to have stuff. Just a thought.

    ==========

I wasn’t really arguing with you, that was more of a rant at the gorebot, but . .

As to consensus; The 56% figure is real - it is the percentage of people who claim to be climatology scientists which agree with anthropomorphic global warming, as related in a recent article in “Scientific American”. 56% Agreement on something this important doesn’t impress me. Yes, consensus is an important part of the process of science, but should come near the END of the process, not be used as a starting point. When the number gets up north of 95%, then it’s worth paying attention to, as in “99.99% of geologists think the Earth is round.” 56% is just another plebicite that does not reflect anything more than a deep split in opinion. 56% is fine for a Congessional Election, but piss poor for “science.”

Carbon dioxide is far from the most important greenhouse gas (water vapor has that distinction, outnumbering all others combined by about 20 to 1). But Kyoto, et al. fails to address this little problem. Why? Because the modern environmentalist movement (the professional envirowienies, not people who want clean air and water just because they don’t want their lungs full of diesel smoke and yellow crap coming from their taps) can’t cripple the U.S. economy by regulating water vapor. Whether it is France and Germany frustrated at how well America is doing, or commited socialists wanting to spread Global Communism, this is ALL THEY HAVE LEFT to control us.

Sound paranoid? It’s not paranoia if they really are shooting at you . . .

I’m all behind nuclear power, but we haven’t built any new plants in this country for, what, 25 years? That is caused by the same people who think we are all gonna drown if the North Pole melts. Meanwhile, France is generating almost all of it’s electricity from nuclear plants, and building them still.

Alternative Energy, at best, has a long way to go. I’m sure you have seen one of the huge wind farms. Those huge fans have to operate for years before they pay for making itself. So far, it isn’t economically feasable.

Look at what gasoline is. It is NOT a source of energy, it is a transportation mechanism for energy from somewhere else. (Btw, we are not running out of oil. We are running out of easy oil. Big difference.) Until we have a transportation mechanism for energy that is close to as cheap and easy to use as gasoline (or, yeah, yeah, diesel), cars are gonna run primarily on gas. That is not to say you cannot make a solar powered car, because it’s been done. So far, it’s payload capacity is one driver and maybe a briefcase, and cost a couple of hundred thou.

My comment about freedom is still, IMHO, valid. This is all another attempt to limit our choices. If, for instance, I can still buy an SUV, but have to pay a tax of $2000.00 per year for the priveledge of owning one (which has been tried locally), then I am no longer free to buy something I can no longer afford. I’m tired of the nibbling.

Please don’t misunderstand, concern for the environment is a good thing, and I have no complaint with those who care. I do myself. It’s just that there is an assload of money going into a few pockets to promote some of this nonsense, they think I’m too stupid to know any better than the lies they spew, and it’s starting to piss me off that they think they can run this scam past me without objection or an occasional rant.

That is not to say you cannot make a solar powered car, because it’s been done.

OK, I have to take exception with this. There is not, and never will be, a solar-powered car that is anything other than a novelty driven around test tracks. Even if it was unreasonably large for a commuter car, say 6m x 2m, and COMPLETELY covered in 100% efficient solar panels, it would still generate less than 25HP. For a vehicle to be able to get along at any speed with that low power, it would have to be so light that a good breeze would blow it completely off the road.

Now, if you are talking about using Solar Panels to recharge your Electric car during the day, that’s different, but it’s not the same as what’s implied by the term, “Solar Powered Car”.

That’s quite correct - IIRC, 25 hp was the output on the winner of the competition where the car appeared. The car was larger than 6m x 2m. I never said it was a commercial product, only that it had been done.

This was at a competition put on by one of our instutions of higher learning a few years ago, and the top speed was about 20 mph carrying the driver and a couple of water bottles.

The prize was less than the cost of the car.

LC Wil - I’ve just seen so many people say things about Solar powered cars who apparently don’t realize that it’s never going to make it to prime time, that I need to point it out once in a while.

I would say that a whole lot of people don’t have a clue how much more power is required to push a vehicle around than is required to run a normal house. I’ve seen people’s eyes bug out when I explain to them that a fairly average car engine (say, for example, 120HP) could drive a generator that would produce over 75kW of power. Of course, the gas tank would only last about 1 1/2 hours at that kind of drain, but it could do it.

That’s a nice article on the solar cars. It’s hard to believe that they could get over 110MPH in something so low-powered.

I don’t think I specifically pinpointed science when I referred to academia. However, I don’t see that many scientist from universities running to the media to clarify their actual beliefs. The silence is deafening. That may not be their fault, since the mainstream media won’t put them on the air anyway. But I can’t help to think that the silence we hear is similar to the silence we hear from so-called moderate musslimbs who don’t actively fight back against the radicals. Because they do nothing, they are irrelevant to the discussion. We all know man-made glowbull warming is BS, climate change…on the other hand…is a fact that is indisputable. (Ice age anyone? Great lakes??) This is a political issue, not a scientific one in my opinion. But we need more scientist (since the leftist loons are wrapping themselves in junk science to sell this crap) to step up and state the facts so we can stop this nonsense before it seriously screws up our country.

Of course, I care about what you think. I just meant that we didn’t all have to agree. You’ve been a great source of knowledge for me, and I greatly appreciate it.

I’m glad your daughter is in college. I am always amazed how expensive college has become, and I am shocked at the amount students have to spend on text books. I spent some time there about 15 years ago. I never strayed into the social sciences there.

I hope I wasn’t too nasty–I had a bad reaction to your post. The thing is that what you dismiss as “junk science” is considered high quality work by a lot of scientists. (And picking apart other people’s work is a fine art.) That’s why they aren’t rushing out to condemn it. Some are–the ones who disagree with it. That’s why I offered to send you a review article positively reviewing the science from the US’s premier scientific journal. (Yes–I believe that Al Gore gets things wrong–I’ve never relied on him as a source.) As Tsubaki pointed out, some things get proven wrong over time. I’ve said several times that it’s a theory, not a proven fact.

I don’t really care if someone doesn’t believe that man’s effects are contributing to climate change. What I care about is when the people that do are considered to be idiots or thought to be part of some conspiracy to ruin the country. I’m not out to destroy the US economy. I think most of us have a strong interest in having a robust economy.
