Sorry about the immense suckitude of the Empire today, but work (and moving, moving, and moving) waits for no man.

Nor, I’m told, does the tide.

So in lieu of the Pearls of Wisdom from the Imperial Staff, we’ve decided that y’all can just go ahead and enjoy yourselves in this thread. Anything goes.

Here’s one for BiW since he’s soured on the legal profession.

Cop pulls a guy over for speeding.

Guy is a total jerk, driving a Porsche (Pretentious Obnoxious Rich Snob Can’t Have Everything, really makes the stereotype).

Cop strokes him the citation and in the comments writes AH.

Prick sees the AH and asks “What’s that for?”

Cop says “That’s code for Ass Hole. Press hard, 4 copies.”

So the prick goes to his attorney and shows him the AH and tells him what the cop said. Lawyer says they have a slam dunk case and they go to court.

Attorney; “Officer, is that your handwriting in the comments section?”

Cop; “Yes sir, the same as it is on the rest of the citation”.

At; “Did you write AH in the comments.”

    Cop “Yes I did”.

Att; “And what does AH mean?”

Cop “It means your client was Aggressive and Hostile”.

Att; “Officer, may I remind you that you are under oath? Doesn’t it really mean that my client was an ass hole?”

Cop; “I don’t know sir, you know your client better than I do”.

Here’s another example of the fine culture that oozes up from our southern border on an all-to-regular basis:

Two cousins are behind bars, charged with aggravated murder in the strangling of 15-year-old Dani Countryman, who was found dead late last month as others slept nearby in a Milwaukie apartment.
Authorities revealed few details of what led to the arrests, and much about the case — including a possible motive — remains a mystery.

Detective Jim Strovink of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office released terse descriptions of the suspects:

Alejandro Emeterio “Alex” Rivera Gamboa, 24, has been in the county jail since his arrest at the scene the day her body was found, held on a probation violation warrant for driving under the influence.

Gilberto Javier “Gabe” Rivera Gamboa, 23, a landscaper, was arrested Monday afternoon as he returned home to the Balboa Apartments on Southeast Courtney in Milwaukie, the complex where Countryman was slain July 28.

Attempting to rape and “accidentally” murdering the 15-year-old girls Americans refuse to.

According to Lars Larson’s local radio show today, one of these motherfuckers was busted FOUR TIMES for DUII and/or driving witout a license in the last seven years! FUCKING FOUR TIMES! And his worthless ass was STILL not in jail or back across the Rio Grande! Un-FUCKING-believable. :insert flaming-mad not-so-smiley here:

Also, from what has come out since that quote above, apparently these two assholes were at a party in an apartment where this girl from Texas was visiting her sister, here in Oregon. One of these douchebags thought he’d like to rape this young girl, so he attempted to do so. When his cousin woke up, he found the rapist on top of the girl with her pants pulled down. Rapist asshole apparently asked his cousin for some help, as his victim was resisting. Asshole number two then put his booted foot on this girl’s chest and/or neck, and then removed it when she stopped resisting. That was because she was now dead.

Maybe Saddam was on to something with the whole plastic shredder thing. He just applied it to the wrong people.

    Marty

I had, this evening the opportunity to discuss the upcoming smoking ban with a local restaurateur whom I have known for decades. He had the unmitigated gall to tell me that because he is a non-smoker, the anti-smoking law that will go into effect January first doesn’t bother him in the least. As a matter of fact, he even said to me: “The law is the law”.

Now, I don’t give a flying F*** who he knows, (and he does know people) or how F*ing far we go back, on January 2, 2008 expect I.C.E. to be at his joint. “The law is the law.”

Actually, PC, that would put you in the position of the man in the story, not the woman. To be in her shoes, you would have to marry a widower, whose previous wife had collected things you had no interest in. And, being dead, there was no chance the ex would show up to collect them.

No, what would bother me about this story (besides the nagging thought that is bears many of the hallmarks of an Urban Legend), is that the couple had already reached a point of non-communication which would allow this to happen. Unless, of course, the new wife sold them on purpose, and didn’t expect the husband to get so pissed.

Let see, among others, there is: The Brady Bunch (I’m an Xer, so there. :P), The Time Tunnel, Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giant, The Mod Squad, F-Troop, Bewitched, Please, Don’t Eat the Daisy, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Here Comes the Brides, I Spy, I Dream of Jeannie, The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry, R.F.D., Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., My Three Sons, Petticoat Junction, The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, The Monkees, Rat Patrol, Get Smart, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Combat!, Candid Camera, That Girl, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., (the rest I mainly saw in syndication), Star Trek, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Twelve O’Clock High, McHale’s Navy, Gilligan’s Island, My Favorite Uncle, Hogan’s Heroes, Hazel, The Untouchables, Batman, Dennis the Menace, The Patty Duke Show, The Munsters, The Addam Family, The Lucy Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show. That’s not all of them, but I don’t want it to get too long.

I guess you can tell what I liked watching? ;) Anyone else? :)

Speaking of old shows, I am presently involved in a wiki on the old 60s series, Hogan’s Heroes. To be honest, I’d done most of the work for the Wiki. 325 articles are up at the moment, in various states of completeness, with the one on Andrew Carter being the present Featured Article.

    RR,

Just the other day I saw Col Klink AND Sgt Schultz on an “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” from over 10 years previous to HH.

Hhhmmm, that would’ve been The Safe Conduct episode, which appeared on February 19, 1956. John Banner (Schultz) played a train conductor while Werner Klemperer player a professor/secret police captain.

We once were going to have a Bob Crane Party. It would have been BYOH (bring your own hammer) :em41:

That was just so wrong on so many levels, RR. For those not old enough to know, Bob Crane (Col. Hogan) was found murder back in 1978, bludgeon to death, but with a video camera tripod. The death is still unsolved.

“The Fugitive”, and here’s an obscure, but incredible one: “The Prisoner”

    kwongdzu
This bolding has it in for me–I did everything correctly. Why doesn’t that happen to anyone else? I think it must be a conspiracy. Karl Rove doesn’t like my posts.

I think I posted late at night, and the thread died. I made you a magnamimous offer (not really, but it’s fun to sound pretentious). I have an extra copy of “Amphigorey Too” (the second one–didn’t sound like you had it.) I would be quite happy to mail it to you, once I got around the inertia of my getting to the post office. tetrodotoxin2 yahoo (it’s pufferfish toxin)

Not to be obscure–this is a quirky illustrator called Edward Gorey who got a Tony for designing the Dracula theatre set.

Check out Gahan Wilson, if he’s still in print. If not, there are master lists of used books available. I was never big on The Far Side, because this guy was so much darker. There is one book called “I Paint What I See” with a guy looking at a beautiful lake and painting it full of monsters. A little girl asks why he’s painting that way: I paint what I see. He used to draw for Playboy (yes–I’ve read it for the interviews).

    Wayne

I am calling for the boycott of all products manufactured in the People’s Republic of China. Food, toys, toothpaste, now even tires are all found to be toxic, dangerous, or just plain shabby. I also want most favored trading status revoked forthwith. Nothing goes out of that country without the approval of the government, so it’s rather disingenuous for them to say they were unaware of the problem. I also despise how outraged they get when we call BS on their proclaimed innocence.

I would agree with you in general. People died in Panama from that cough syrup contaminated with the antifreeze component. The monkfish really being extremely toxic pufferfish was a nice touch. But so much of our stuff is made in China–Walmart would go out of business. Just think of all those American plants that could start up again and rejuvenate depressed areas.

We should also inspect more than 1% of the food coming into the country.

There was an article on press censorship in China the other day in the LAT (Tues?). Apparently, it’s less dangerous to be a foreignor. This NYT team went to inspect one of the factories that made one of those toys with the lead paint. They were detained for 9 hr by the government.

psychochick - I wasn’t referring to gender when I posted that. I was merely pointing out that since you mentioned considering anything your husband collected as trreasured keepsakes, that would put you in the man’s position in the story, because in THAT hypothetical situation, YOU would be the one with the collected items left behind by the deceased spouse.

I could just as easily have said to imagine that you then married someone who had no interest in your ex-husband’s colected items (Of course, you have to assume that you didn’t make a point of telling him that those were keepsakes), but I thought it would be more understandable if you put yourself in the position of the person who SOLD the items in the yardsale, rather than the one who LOST said items by the actions of said new spouse.

If I was trying to explain the difference of perspective to a man, I would have said that he would have to imagine marrying a woman who had lost her husband who had collected things he didn’t care for. It would be as if I married some woman whose previous husband had collected football helmets, for example. If I thought she didn’t care, things like those would be gone practically overnight, unless I kept one or two for actual use.

I always seem to run into the problem of people not getting the intended message when I think up hypothetical situations, and have to go back and re-explain them. No offense, but it seems to happen the most with people who lean Left, as if they see and hear everything with a strange filter that causes unintended issues to stand out, such as the sex or race of the people involved, or maybe the identity of an individual, especially if it’s someone who generates a strong negative emotional response.

Wil - when someone goes in to clean it up, I think they are going to have to wipe out that part about the closing bold tag in #81. I think the dash mark there somehow is making the browsers ignore the rest of the closing bold marks. Maybe they can change it to the code for a minus sign - & m i n u s ; (without the spaces).

THIS is gonna get evolutionists’ panties in a wad, for sure:

Not really. There’s no way an entire species can evolve (practically at once), the way laymen seem to believe. Evolution would occur when individuals gain a new trait, then pass it on to their children. If the new trait is of a type that would encourage, or even necessitate, a change in behavior, then once there is a large enough population with the new trait, they would split off from the old group and go their separate ways, leaving the old behind to go their own way. There’s no reason they couldn’t both survive for an indefinite period of time practically side by side, as long as there was little or no competition for food or other resources.

Only when the physical change is not accompanied by behavioral changes can the new trait spread out to take over the entire population. There are undoubtedly numerous groups that came about which we have never found, because for some reason they didn’t survive long enough or in the right area to produce fossils, or we just haven’t found them yet.

Fossils will never produce a complete enough record to know exactly what was going on before historical records. It’s like CSI going over an really old criminal case: they will never be certain their reconstruction of the crime is completely correct, but based on other crimes with similar trace evidence, they can usually come to a pretty good conclusion. With archaeology, we have less to work with by comparison, because the field is much bigger than a single crime scene, so naturally reconstructions will be that much more fluid and subject to change as new evidence comes to light.

I thought of going into plumbing a long time ago. I’ve completely re-plumbed two houses, one a friends (for practice), and then my own.

I love sweating pipe to get the water in, but it’s the outflow that turned me off. I’m not squeamish, I’ve worked in hospitals, and I even changed my kids diapers when he was young (I refuse to do it now), but putting my hands into refuse from someone I don’t know just gives me a queezy feeling, I don’t care how thick or long the gloves are. I could probably get over it in time, but it could be a bumpy ride.

Same goes for Electrician. I rewired my garage so I could plug in more that four things at a time. But on my job, I’ve had the joy of being the ground for 220V, and I can’t get past the idea that, even though I know the powers off, there isn’t some residual current in that wire I’m gonna grab that’s going to zap me.
