Via LC & IB Ace, whose post you shouldn’t miss for the inimitable, high-quality snark.

Look at this picture from Agence France-Presse of a poor oppressed brown-skinned Iraqi grandma:

Some aging crone selling black market ammunition at the bazaar to afford falafels for the grandchildren?

Not according to AFP’s caption:

An elderly Iraqi woman shows two bullets which she says hit her house following an early coalition forces raid in the predominantly Shiite Baghdad suburb of Sadr City. At least 175 people were slaughtered on Tuesday and more than 200 wounded when four suicide truck bombs targeted people from an ancient religious sect in northern Iraq, officials said.(AFP/Wissam al-Okaili)

Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can throw unused ammunition at will in the general direction of old ladies?

Speaking of that, considering the scarcity and price of ammunitions these days, if any of you fine soldiers of the U.S. Armed Forces stateside have any unused 7.62×51 NATO laying around (none of that poodle-plinking 5.56 crap shown in the picture, please) and you need to put in some practice before shipping out, you’re more than welcome to throw a few thousand rounds in my general direction. Heck, I’ll even dress up as an old lady if it makes for a better training environment! Anything for our troops. Refreshments provided free of charge as well.

Seriously, if the already non-existent “standards” of journalism get any lower, everything will be printed in Chinese. Which, apart from the strange looking characters, probably won’t make a noticeable difference.

Hopeless assclowns.

    So, the obvious questions are,

    1. “Did they throw these at her house?”
    2. “Did the photographer stage the whole thing, and is he/she really that stupid?”

    Now that is funny.

Maybe the ruffians couldn’t afford the weapons, so they started throwing bullets instead.

I saw this picture over at Hot Air earlier, and just skipped over it.

The thing that amazes me most is that these asshat’s can be “stationed” in a military zone with the responsibility to report on the war, yet don’t know what a real spent bullet looks like….No, they know. It just made a prettier shinier picture.

The rational will be you can’t show spent ammo because it dissolves , even when it hits mud brick, so we used what we thought it was…hey could have been AK ammo that really did the damage, but that’s not pertinent.

Saw an interesting post over at Ace’s:

Okay, picture #1 is obviously wrong…firing bullets with the shell casing on but the second picture is odd. I work for a commercial heat treater and we heat treat the bullet core for armor piercing .50 cal rounds. It’s either 4140 or 1050 steel, carburized….REAL hard. That looks just like the core…without the jacket. Like the copper had been melted off for the money…

    veddy interezting indeeeeed……

Well..I don’t know how to post an image (we use to have this feature), but like he said, the second image down (link in post #7)….My question is how do you melt the copper jacket off a cartridge? In my experience, heat + cartridge = not good, unless it’s in the breech pointed at something you really don’t like.

BTW, totally unrelated but my friend from west Pennsylvania had a brilliant idea for a pseudo-conservative columnist (read: pansy-assed, panty-wearing, wimpy asshat loser) who has been getting on everybody’s nerves lately– Bruce Bartlett.

Bartloser is the idiot formerly with NRO who claims to be a “conservative,” who now gets orgasmic excitement from his constant tirades against “yahoos” (aka ordinary Republicans) who dare to speak out for gun rights– Bartlett calls us gun nuts– or who want to stop out-of-control spending in the government.

Even worse, Bruce Bartlett has committed the cardinal sin on several occasions when, being the coward and pansy surrenderer that he is, he tells Republicans that we’re too far behind and should give up on the 2008 elections and support– get this– Hillary Clinton. :em98: (This when polls show Hillary getting blown out of the water by both Giuliani and Thompson.)

A lot of us wanted to destroy Bruce Bartlett after his latest turd column on this in the LA Times :em41: , especially when it’s become obvious how dangerous Hillary truly is to the very survival of America, but I think the best idea when dealing with a surrender monkey like Bruce Bartlett, is to send Bruce a gift befitting a coward like him, you know, to make him know that we understand the reason that he’s in such dire need of therapy and a spanking.

So my buddy in PA suggested we get a little fund together, and send Bruce Bartlett a pretty little pink dress, stockings and a braid for his pretty wimpy hair. Then wrap it and slip a white flag in the ribbon addressed to Bruce, labeled “Wear with Pride.”

AFAIK Bruce Bartlett still has a mailbox at National Review, so I’m sure he’d appreciate the gesture. It’ll show him that yes, Bruce Bartlett, we know you’re a coward, a loser, and a pathetic waste of brain tissue who’s trying to transform your own personal disappointments and abject failure of an excuse for a career into something broader than your own pathetic self. But hey, we know of your suffering and, despite our tendency to laugh in well-deserved contempt at your incompetent whinings, being the bleeding hearts that we are, we still care about you, Bartlett Boy. Yes, we actually do care.

I’ve meaning to post to you for awhile. I think it was from before the night of the great bolding. You were talking about people ignoring data, and I was reminded of a couple environmental things where the wrong things were done

    1) styrofoam cups
When you analyzed the energy involved in making paper vs styrofoam cups and analyzed their breakdown, using styrofoam cups was better for the environment. But there was no way to convince any one of that.

    2) recycled plastic
These things, like bags, were awful. They would contaminate the plastic piles and screw up the recycling of the plastic.

You probably know about this–last week the LAT had an article about journalists in China. It sounds terrible for the Chinese. It sounded like it wasn’t quite so bad for the foreignors, but you did say you have to keep a low profile. Apparently, a NYT team went to look at one of the factories that made the toys with lead paint. They were detained by the government for 9 hr. I didn’t know if you wanted the link.

That’s unusual that people use Macs and are not subsequently impressed with their elegance and superiority. I was about to say it’s a free country, but that doesn’t apply to you! It’s a free world intellectually for computer choice. How’s that?

RadioactiveLiberty.com had a link to a site with 24 reasons not to watch 24, and one of them was that they were going to be using Apple computers. (I’m pretty sure it was a joke.)

Could you do something about the horror you have inflicted on us? I actually like the woman, and I find it unbearable. You will drive mad the majority of the people on the site that despise her.

I knew somebody that considered the transit system as part of his reasons to move to Portland.

Union Pacific spent $1.2 Billion to acquire Southern Pacific, and 11,000 miles of track and all of its rolling stock.

Portland Oregon has spent nearly twice that to build less than 100 miles of light rail.

Somnething is seriously wrong here. A similar system could have been made using electrically powered buses running on transit-only two lane roads for 1/1000th of the cost. This ain’t about transit … it is about everyone getting a chance to blow megabucks of federal pork.

I knew somebody that considered the transit system as part of his reasons to move to Portland.

My parents and brother moved up to the Portland area (Beaverton)about 8 years ago. They keep bitching that anytime money is allocated to improve transportation instead of installing signals, repaving roads etc., the funds all get diverted to designating a new bike path. The week I was up there, I think I saw, maybe, three people on bikes. It only rained one day I was there, so that wasn’t the reason for the lack of bicyclists.

oh and if you ever see plans that come from Portland for transit/light rail/land use/ or other so called neat toys for city hall, protest it and don’t give up.

Seattle fell for that. In fact we almost wound up with not only light rail, but a monorail expansion as well.

Voters in Seattle were sold on the light rail proposal because of the claims that Portland’s light rail runs at roughly 90 percent occupancy at all times.

I work out of KPOJ in Portland, and I’ve observed those trains. It is real easy to get that 90 percent occupancy if you keep removing the cars from the train. On many occasions I have seen that train with only one or two cars. They might as well run a fucking bus — it would have been cheaper.

We have the Sounder Train up here that runs from Tacoma through Seattle to Everett two or three times a day. Until this week when they’ve shut down a huge swath of I-5 for construction, that train ran virutally empty.

We have a huge transportation problem up here in Seattle, and that’s a fact. But instead of improving or enlarging the freeways, they choose to add more buses, or propose more trains that by the time they are completed, traffic will be even worse than it is now.

Adding more buses only makes the traffic worse. Our main freeways bere built between thirty and fifty years ago when we didn’t have so many people here.

I was down in Houston last month and drove on the freeways there. Wow. What a stark difference. A body could actually get somewhere.

    Okay, my rant is over.

That Sounder Train is dirt cheap compared to PDX light rail. They just used old Sante Fe rolling stock and locomotives, and ran them on disused heavy rail tracks. They also got a clue, and made a two lane transit road with CNG powered buses instead of spending a billion dollars on a shiny new light rail line.

Seattle will always have a major traffic problem … too much water in the way. Existing freeways need to be double decked, and the floating bridges need to be doubled.

Oh yes, maybe even triple-decked for through traffic not wanting to get off in Seattle.

Our bypass freeway, I-405 needs to widen by at least two lanes in both directions.

Personally, I would do away with the HOV lanes, since the original intent of taking two or more licensed commuters off the road has been replaced by allowing mothers with children and infants to zip from point A to point B while the rest of us have to sit in congealing traffic for an hour just to get twenty miles.

I have also toyed with the idea of mandating that all trucks either stay off the freeways during rush hour, or stay in the outside lane. Because of the hills around here, these trucks have a hell of a time getting up to speed, thereby causing much of the freeway traffic jam during rush hour.

I am also a proponent for a minimum freeway speed limit. I’m sorry, but if your 1974 K-car or your electric toaster-car can’t go at least 60 MPH, then stick to the side streets.

If you are one of those women who use the driver’s seat as a vanity so you can put on your makeup and do your hair, and talk on the phone while you are driving, I curse you.

I saw a woman the other day reading a paperback while driving up I-5 on my way home from Portland.

Macs have their uses — just not their mainstream uses. They are great for graphics and publishing, and music, but as far as a business platform or web development? They suck. (Sorry, Patrick, if you are still reading here)

I just bought a Dell OptiPlex 740 Small Form Factor (Vista)AMD ATHLON™ 64 X2 5200+ (2.60GHz, 1MBx2)with 4GB DDR2 Non-ECC SDRAM,800MHz, (4 DIMM) from the Dell outlet site for a whopping $568 which included 2nd-day delivery. It was a “previously ordered” machine — in other words, someone ordered it, and then changed their mind. If I would have ordered it by having Dell build the machine, it would have cost me almost $1900 for the same machine.

Either way, I still wound up with a machine that is far better than the Mac I have collecting dust behind me.

    Dave:

We have the same problems with the Metro Trains in D.C. So far, the only thing keeping the trains runing is subsidies from D.C, Virginia and Maryland. Without them, the price of a ride would triple. Other than in the 4 hours of rush, or the occasional football, baseball or basketbrawl game, you can always find a seat on a two car train.

Adding more buses only makes the traffic worse. Our main freeways bere built between thirty and fifty years ago when we didn’t have so many people here.

My experience, damn near everywhere, has been that the people who plan freeways (politicians) sell something to the public based on what traffic is out there right now, knowing the road won’t be fully operational for at least ten years. At which point, the same people have to immediately sell another highway plan, because the one they just cut the ribbon for (and won’t be paid for until twenty years from now) is already crowded. Instant job security.

There is actually something about L.A. that I can appreciate. We’re carcentric, and proud of it.

I work a rotating schedule, so I get to drive at all hours and in all kinds of traffic. It’s 16 miles from home to work (and the other way round) and , as a norm, it takes 20 minutes (good day or 4 AM) to 50 minutes for my commute. The 20 minute is the norm which pleases the guy I relieve to no end. He gets off about 20 minutes before shift change because I plan my drive on something bad happening.

Boy did this thread go OT :em71:

Our designers (graphic and print output) just disposed or their iMacs, because they weren’t fully networkable with the global corp. intranet. I think designers like them because of the pretty boxes, and designers are vulnerable to shiny packaging. There was a time they were definitely superior for design purposes, but I think that time has passed.

Now they’re all style, no substance.

Well folks, I’d showed that picture of that Arab woman holding the two bullets which she claimed came through her house to my dad earlier this evening. Now, before anyone ask, my father was in the Army in the early 50s. In fact, he fought in Korea. When I’d told him about her claim, and showed him the picture which was on Rachel Lucas’ blog, he’d agree with me that since those bullets were still inside their casing they could not have been fired.

Just thought you guys would want to know.
