The first Perfect Football Weekend™ ever to hit the Empire of the Rottweiler kicks off…

AUGUSTUS:  By Baal’s left nipple, can it get any cornier?

MERLIN:  Trust me, he’s just getting started.

LSIK&T:  Oh, pipe down, both of you.

…by noting that Adam “Pacman” Jones, late of the Tennessee Vince Youngs Titans, has another gig now that he’s been suspended for the year by the NFL:  Pro wrestling.

Yeah, you heard right:  Pro wrestling.

BRUTUSWe  had professional wrestling.  That  is called, I believe, “rasslin’”.

LSIK&T:  What-ever.

But here’s the kicker:  The Titans, obviously wanting to protect their investment for when Jones comes back, tried to take Pacman to court the other day to keep him from the possibility of physical contact - and thus, injury.  According to this story, they’ve come to an agreement whereby Pacman would not actually engage in any physical contact.

CALIGULA:  Wuss.

MERLIN:  True dat.

OZY MCCOOL:  What a weenie!

KORRIOTH:  You would know, wouldn’t you, whelp?

OZY MCCOOL:  Hey!!!

LSIK&T:  Awright, knock it off!

Jones’ Titans are in Foxboro Friday night to take on the Patriots.

Also Friday night, Fox has Minnesota at the NY J-E-T-S JetsJetsJets!, while ESPN has Miami traveling to Arrowhead this evening to play Kansas City’s Chiefs.  Sunday night, Madden & Michaels are in Baltimore to watch the Ravens host the New York Football Giants, and Monday night ESPN will have a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl as Da Bears are at Indy.

Saturday night, the Denver Broncos come to Texas Stadium to take on the Cowboys.  Jay Cutler has replaced Jake Plummer this year, for which Bronco fans are eminently grateful (Plummer having aptly demonstrated in 4 years why Arizona didn’t even want him).  Denver will pose a more adequate test for the Cowboys, as they feature a running game & a defense more closely resembling the ones Dallas will face in the NFC East.  Cowboy fans, yours truly included, will want to keep their eyes peeled for this one.

We’re back Tuesday for the recap.

(Psst, Rotties!  This is where you guys begin to talk smack, mkay?  And try not to bore me with the ancient Cowboys/police blotter crap, hm?  That was so 10 years ago, y’know?    )

Hmmm, Miami versus my Chiefs tonight at Arrowhead…Last week both candidates for Chiefs QB - Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard - each had a couple of INTs or fumbles versus Cleveland, while Dolphins QB (and former Chief) Trent Green had a miserable debut last week for Miami. So which current or former Chiefs QB will win the head-to-head turnover competition tonight?

…And after the way the Chiefs treated the classy, loyal and hardworking Green last season and during the offseason, before they finally let him escape to Miami, should I root for my Chiefs or cheer for the Fins tonight as an act of protest?

And this weekend it’s Denver at Dallas. I guess, for one night, I’ll just have to be a Cowboys fan…

We have the NFL Network at work, so I got to see my Raiders beat the Cardinals. I don’t know whether to be leery or not, the Raiders never win in pre-season.

The difference…a front offensive line. It’s amazing what a competent QB can do when the defense can’t get back there faster than the ball.

I’m not screaming Super Bowl this year, but at least we may rise above the shame of the last few years and look like a team that can contend.

    SoCal,

That’s just a typical Sunday post game party. I was at a Broncos Raiders game in the old Mile High Stadium, sitting in the second tier. some guy came in a Raiders jacket, it was a game where the Raiders were killing us (it was in the 70’s when the Raiders were good :em95: )

Anyhooo, this guy kept putting it in the faces of the crowd that we were getting whomped. After 3 quarters of this abuse, some Broncos fans came out of their seats, grabbed this guy, carried him to the rail and threw him over the rail and down to the first tier…..that’s the weirdest thing I ever saw at a Broncos game, that and the naked cheerleader who came out of nowhere and performed with the Pony Express Cheerleaders (until she was arrested).

Sometimes I really miss not living in Denver anymore. Seattle fans just don’t have the same brand of savage loyalty towards their football team

    Merc,

I’m sure that there’s a moron somewhere who’ll believe what the jailed loon is saying. I would not be surprised if he’s only doing this because Vick is in such hot water at the moment.

Me, I’m hoping that my Eagles do better tomorrow night against the Panthers. And they’ll be using McNabb tonight. And after seeing what that turf in Baltimore seem to cause, I don’t blame them for waiting until tonight to put him into action.

With that said, I hope McNabb will be his usual self. I.E., scaring the defense with his running ability if he can’t find someone open when trying to pass the football, and then hitting the open man with the football. Now, if the guys will catch the ball, we’ll really be cooking. :)

Unfortunately, I’m also an ASU fan/alumnus. The pre-seasnon analysis on them is very similar to the Raiders. Big improvements, but not heading anywhere this year.

Now I could pull out USC as the team I’ve followed since I first saw football, but I won’t. At least not now. Let’s see how the Sun Devils do in their first few games.

No, when SEC football starts. I’ve watched those damnyankee teams play, and it isn’t the same. And as much as I give them a ration of crap, the teams of the old South West Conference (Texas, Houston, Rice, TCU, T-State, T-Tech, A&M, and SMU).

    They take it PERSONAL.

I take it you’ve never actually WATCHED an Ohio State-Michigan game? Or an Iowa-Wisconsin game? Or a Minnesota-Wisconsin game? Or a Michigan-Michigan State game?

I’ve lived in the heart of SEC country, in the heart of Big Ten (…okay, you got me on that one. Only in the Midwest would the Big Ten have eleven teams…), country, and currently reside in the heart of Big 12 (Old South West Conference) country. There is no comparison. Big Ten football is the best.

The best comparison I can give you is the difference between professional football and college football. No one would argue that college players, or college teams are better than the professional teams. BUT, college football easily has more fans, more attendance, and more loyal followings. Why? Because college football is a better style of football, not because the players or teams or better. The Big Ten is a better style of football. The SEC, Pac-10 and Li…er…Big 12 may have better teams, and may even have better conferences, but, the Big Ten is a better style.

In the South, and in Texas, football is king. In Big Ten land? Football is god.

    Blackiswhite,

You ARE aware that the Big Ten title goes through Madison this year, right? In the span of three weeks, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio State will all play each other. I’m used to the Wolverines and Buckeyes playing for the title every year. I’m just ecstatic that Bucky has a chance to play kingmaker…and just *might* be able to render the Michigan-Ohio State game near-meaningless for Big Ten title purposes, if Bucky can beat Michigan at home, and Ohio State in the ‘Shoe.

Checked out the Badger’s record in bowl games recently?

Or, better yet, checked the scores from last year’s bowl games?

Once again, I’ll remind you of the analogy I used. Put your USC Trojans up against the New England Patriots. Or the Pittsburgh Steelers. Or even the Chicago Bears. Certainly looks like the Trojans can’t beat a team with talent anymore, doesn’t it? Or, in the case of Da Bearz, a team with almost-talent.

For one game, talent beats style. For a season? Style will always win, in the long run. Just look at what happened to the Purdue Boilermakers after they brought in the spread offense. For the first season or two, they ran past the Big Ten. Starting about the third season, they ran past the Big Ten for the first half of the season, and then, slowed WAAAAAY down, to where the Badgers looked positively speedy. Last year? It was hard for their receivers to run crisp routes, when their entire bodies were bruises. Put USC into the Big Ten for five years. They won’t be quite so quick anymore. Same with most (not all) SEC teams.

Before the 1995 (I think) Rose Bowl, a reporter asked UW coach Barry Alvarez what he thought about all the grumblings that the Badgers were possibly the worst team to play in the Rose Bowl since it went Big Ten champion-Pac-10 champion. Barry withheld comment until after the game.

“I guess we’re the second worst team to play in the Rose Bowl.”

Bucky has OWNED the Pac-10 for the past 15 years. Just because an over-rated Michigan or an over-rated Ohio State can’t beat anyone in bowl game, doesn’t mean the 3rd best team in the conference can’t.

I’m a Wisconsin sports fan, which means I’m accustomed to losing ways. So, with as little homering as I can muster, the University of Wisconsin Badgers are the most consistent team in the Big Ten, and the most consistently under-rated. I’m not lumping them in with the Big Boys yet (Bucky has about another decade or two before winning is a habit), but, the Badgers are not a team to overlook anymore. If you don’t bring your A game, don’t bother showing up. Bucky has done a good job of winning the games they should win (with the usual letdowns of a second-tier team trying to break into the first tier), and usually loses the games he should lose. Usually. Every year or two, though, a team looks past them, and pays for it. If Coach Bielema can transfer his intensity to the players, Bucky could be competing for a “national championship” in the next five years. (Contrary to popular belief, and defying all logic, there isn’t an NCAA football national championship. The championships are all non-NCAA sanctioned.)

No, the champion isn’t always from the SEC. Ya’ll ever think that some of that might be because the other conferences only have, at MOST three teams worth a damn? Out of the 12 in the SEC, four (LSU, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee) always start the season with legitimate National Title Aspirations, and Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, and South Carolina usually have ranked teams (and usually their own aspirations). The other four (Vandy, Kentucky, Ol’ Miss and Mississippi State) make damn good spoilers for the rest of the season.

We beat each other up so much that a 10-2 record in the SEC is the equivelent of Ohio State going 12-0.

I have no clue what you’re going on about.

For one thing, I didn’t list a fantasy team in there. I compared the best team* in college football to three randomly chosen professional teams. There would be no question about who would win. The professional teams are more talented, bigger, faster, stronger and more experienced than the Trojans. In addition, there aren’t any “walk-ons” in professional football. Almost every player in the NFL is the cream of the crop of NCAA football. USC’s strength is that it has a higher percentage of the best college players than any of the other college teams. But USC is STILL a less talented team than ANY professional team! (USC is better coached than at least half of the professional teams, but, I’m pretty sure the on-field talent would still smother USC.)

As for recruiting? Wisconsin’s recruiting far from “lacked”. Under Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin recruited defenders, O-lineman, and big running backs. Reggie Bush is a freak, and deserved his Heisman. But, he wasn’t the type of running back Barry Alvarez was looking for. So, no recruiting of Reggie. In addition, QBs under Barry were hand-off machines, who passed *just* often enough to remind the opposing defense that Barry was aware you were allowed to pass the ball. That style of offense was not a good fit for a Matt Leinart type of quarterback, so, no recruiting of Matt Leinart. So, it’s a bit hard to say Wisconsin’s recruiting was lacking when it didn’t get two players it didn’t even try to get! Wisconsin is routinely in the top ten of recruiting classes in NCAA, because Wisconsin looks for certain types of players, and then, goes after them. If Wisconsin (or any other team, for that matter) doesn’t go after a player, it doesn’t mean either the player OR recruiting are deficient. It means Wisconsin (or any other college) was looking for a different type of player!

*Florida won the BCS Championship. Florida hasn’t lost a game since. Until proven otherwise, Florida is the best team in the nation. But, I’d bet the farm on USC beating the Gators in the parking lot of the stadium. USC is just that loaded (as usual), and that well coached.

The Badgers still haven’t lost a game to a Pac-10 team. I’d say that’s “holding out to the end, where it counts.”

The Badgers are the third best team in the Big Ten. I’ll take the Badgers against the third best team in any other conference. If Bucky manages to pull a miracle, and beat Michigan at home, and Ohio State in the ‘Shoe, maybe Bucky will get to meet your Trojans on the field. It would take a lot of losing by other teams, and likely one loss by the Trojans to happen (an undefeated USC plays in the BCS title game. I’m not *that* much of a homer that I’ll claim Bucky will be playing in the ‘Championship’ game if they go undefeated. BCS game? Yes. Title game? No.), but, it’s still possible. Then, and only then, would we have something on the field to back up our claims. (For the record, I think USC would win that game by 20, after Booty’s backup leads the Trojans to a fourth-quarter flurry of scoring.)

In my case, I spent my first year down here saying “Back in WI…” because it took me about a year for it to actually sink in that I didn’t have to go back. Since then, any comments I make about “back in WI” are only for comparison purposes. If I liked how they did in WI so much, I’d go back. I haven’t gone back.

The absolute worst about that, though, are the jackasses from NYC. Not only do they spend all their time telling you how much better they did it “back in New York”, they then try and get everything changed to how they did it “back in New York”. When you suggest to them that, maybe, just maybe, if they like how they did it “back in New York” so much, they should go back, they tell you how bad it was “back in New York”.

Fucking New Yorkers are one of the reasons (but, pretty far down the list) I got out of Madison. It still takes a fair amount of willpower for me not to punch any NYCer I meet in the face.

What’s up with all this “south shall rise again” crap? I thought this was a FOOTBALL thread, not the 28,382,538th re-enactment of the Civil War… zzzzzzzz…. Wake me up when the football starts.

Hey on the plus side at least one of my teams has to win a game this weekend (they play each other).

I say they’re getting all their losing out before the season starts so they can win more games in the regular season. Probably wishful thinking but hey I can dream, no?

Wil, you’re not supposed to put sugar on grits? Since when?

And all I can say about my Chiefs is: they’d better get that let’s-blow-the-game-at-the-end crap out of their systems now before the actual season starts… :em98:

Well, actually, I ought to say this as well:

    1) If Miami doesn’t find an offensive line between now and opening day, Trent Green will start the season being carried off the field on a stretcher for the second year in a row. And poor Trent probably can’t take many more headshots than he already has… :em41:

    2) If KC doesn’t find an offensive line, it doesn’t matter whether Prie$t Holmes comes back from the disabled list, or whether Larry John$on comes back from his holdout: nobody will be able to run the ball for them. :em98:

    3) Memo to Chiefs coach Herm Edwards: Forget this musical chairs nonsense at QB and just make Brodie (”Roll Tide!”) Croyle the starter, since he’s supposed to be the “quarterback of the future” and all that. KC hasn’t been able to develop a QB since Len Dawson, fer cryin’ out loud; the future is now. Besides, Herm, you’ve pretty much turned the team upside down, so since this is a rebuilding year anyway… :em96:

    4) Speaking of Len Dawson - this is for Chiefs fans only, assuming there’s more of us here than myself and maybe Nevada Steve - when you listen to his play-by-play on the radio, do you get the feeling that he doesn’t seem to realize that ISN’T THE FREAKIN’ QUARTERBACK ANYMORE?! Jeez, why don’t you go down to the field and give Brodie a few pointers or something instead of just bitching about him? Or whoever else lines up behind center for the Chiefs, for that matter?

    But what the hell do I know? I’m just a long-suffering fan… :em94:

    Wes!:

Wil, you’re not supposed to put sugar on grits? Since when?

Since the Good Lord gave them to us! (Along with various fried pork products, eggs, bisquits, fried taters, chicory coffee and sawmill and/or red eye gravy.)

We make some exceptions for the Ladies (Mrs. M!), but they were designed to be et with black pepper and a contented sigh, knowing that everything is in it’s place and all is well with the world.

How the hell did a football thread get onto breakfast cuisine?

    [whazzat, dear?] [oh. never mind.]

    Mrs. M:

All this discussion over which conference is best and all these supposed proofs from Bowl games. Although the great Ohio State gets its ass kicked every time it plays the SEC. Can we just scrap the friggin bowl system and go with a playoff like 1-AA and everyone else. Talk about hype and revenues. I think it would make the bowl system look ridiculous. Also the way scheduling currently works no extension of the season really with a 32 team field. Any comments?

    LC smaug6:

How about take the current Conference Champions and Number Two, then fill out the remainder of the 32 team schedule from the Coaches and AP poll average?

That will guarantee at least two teams from each, and I suspect that this would also include damn near every team considered to be top tier. Yes, some conferences would have four teams “eligible” under this scenario, so limit each conference to a maximum of four teams.

If, as an example, Florida and LSU are number 1 and 2 from the SEC, there would still be room for, say Tennessee and Georgia. Or if, Michigan State were beaten by both Ohio State and Michigan, they would still be in with a 10-2 season.

Just so we don’t leave out Notre Lame, include the “independents” as one conference.

Save the “traditional” BCS bowl games for the end of the season, rotate the Championship Game between them.

This would be 16 bowl games, out of the current scaty-eight we currently have, so we could even look at making this double elimination. The NCAA has sometimes had “problems” finding enough .500 teams to fill all of the bowls now.

Do the Championship game the weekend between the NFC / AFC Championship weekend and the Superbowl, after allowing a two week break.

Properly done, this could fill every weekend that Nascar isn’t on!

Having listened to several NCAA officials comment on the lack of a football tournament, I can tell you that the idea of a ‘national championship’ tournament is Dead On Arrival.

The NCAA already has a plan in place to run a D-1 tournament. The NCAA already runs D-2 and D-3 tournaments. The NCAA also runs tournaments in every other college sport. Why isn’t the D-1 tournament being utilized?

Because the college presidents don’t want one. A tournament would bring in many times more money than the current bowl system. More money into the athletic departments means more power for the athletic departments. The presidents, by and large, think the athletic departments already have too much power and money. Giving them even more gives them the vapors.

So, once again, we can blame Libtards for denying the American public something it wants.

McNabb’s back and he was in top form while taking apart the Panthers.

Wow.  He went 6 for 9 against a getting-long-in-the-tooth defense during a preseason game.  I’m really  impressed.

I tend to think this line is a bit more telling:

On his final play, McNabb was sacked by Stanley McClover and Thomas Davis. He got right up and walked to the sideline.

Donna had best get that skirt ready (he’s gonna need it).  That, or his line had best sharpen up their holding techniques a bit.
