Just got FiOS installed yesterday and whaddayaknow, the TV chooses today to die on me. Dead as a doornail. Out for the count. Not turning on.

Well, I guess I’m off to pull tricks in bathhouses until I can buy a new one. Right after I get done cursing fate for about six hours straight.

Life… Oh, how I hate it.

“When I hit the power button to turn it on now it clicks for a while without producing any sound or picture, then gives up and is dead again.”

I had that happen to me last year. Damn thing went clickity clickity click then poof! It was almost 9 years old and had run problem free for its life.

I ended up getting an LCD TV. That was an expense I had been hoping to hold off for at least 1-2 more years. Still I got a good deal. Sears screwed up my order and in compensation gave me a much better model for the same price. (Actualy the extended warrenty was $80 less so I came out ahead on the deal)

It didn’t help that I was among the unemployed at that time. Still the “No interest for 1 year” on a new sears card was quite helpful, especially since I had it paid off in 9 months.

Credit card companies hate me. I never carry a balance on my cards. :em99:

Try going to Costco. The Vizio’s look really nice and they appear to be rather reasonable. (I bought a Samsung LCD)

This’ll sound ridiculous, but try leaving it unplugged for a few minutes (15 ought to do) and plugging it back in. I had a TV that started just quitting like that after I got cable. The first time I thought it was dead, until I did that out of desperation - then it quit about once every couple months after that. It had something to do with the way that the cable company sent updated channel lists.. or something.

Um Yeah is still around somewhere? I haven’t heard from him in a LONG time.

It sounds like the power supply, Misha.

I used to pickup dead sets off of Craigslist because people give them away free when they start doing that. Most of them can easily be fixed by removing the power supply out, re-soldereding the solder joints, and then putting it back in.

The power supplies will develop cold solder joints after a few years of turning the sets on and off. (the initial turn on takes a lot of wattage and will almost boil the solder) Look for the joints that have become grey in color. Those are indicative of possible cold solder joints.

A repair guy can get you back up and running for around $120.

(my training as an engineer in a radio station was useful in a lot of electronics. I used to make an extra $2 - 3 grand a month just repairing TVs and selling them)

Sounds like a good guess, Deej. It is a 10 year old set, after all, and it’s been turned on and off quite a bit. Damn fine TV, though. 36″ RCA CRT with one heck of a built-in sound system, so I’m hoping that it’s fixable. It is a Power Edge 1900 dual quad core xeon.

Since Dell is replacing it this is probably a moot point….but I love a challenge.

I’ve lost RAID controllers before, but have heart generally once the H/W layer problem was rectified, the actual data on the affected RAID was ok. I’m assuming you’re using a RAID 5?

Can you access the RAID controller at all (via Crtl + M)? If so, can it see the physical drives?

Any beep codes or lights during POST? Does it in fact even POST or does it hang during the POST process?

What is it’s service tag#? If it still has the original H/W config that is my best bet to look at your H/W configs.

Send those to me, if anything I can wash that thru the Dell DCSE drill downs for you and see what I can find if you’d like.

    Regards,
    Snarl
