Due to popular demand (if one thinks that LC Wil is “popular”) I have opened this second open and free-fer-all thread.

There are no prizes for being first.

I was invited to go to the dealer’s auction this morning, and lookie what I picked up:

Not bad for $2500, huh?

It is a 2001 1/2 Volkswagen Passat GLX with a V-6 loaded.  It has 87000 miles, which means that I should do the timing belt and water pump right away.

I would have gotten it for about $1500 if the joker to the left of me hadn’t over-bid the money he had.  I could have dropped it on his ass, and he would have been banned from future actions, but I really liked the car.

Cornell? There’s bastion of democracy if I ever heard one…/ sarcasm

Well, they wrote it word-for-word from Findlaw. Would you rather have that link?

I fully understand the intent of those words, and no it is not to be read into like you and the rest of the liberal establishment seem to be so fond of doing with your “living document” tripe.

The courts, since almost day-one have been interpreting the “Freedom of the Press” clause in the First Amendment.

However, this has nothing to do with living documents at all, it goes to the intention, or spirit of the law. In other words, what were the framers of the Constitution telling us?

And that is EXACLTY what your post asserts; that we are to try and read into what the founders had in mind, or worse via the “living document ” blather change it at whim and make a square peg fit into a round hole when we don’t like what we see or it doesnt fit our agendas.

Well, you don’t have to go far to find out exactly what they were thinking. You can read all about what they were thinking in the Federalists papers.

    PC,

Somewhere in this mess I call an office I have a book on CJD. In it the author writes about an experiment that was done with a CJD infected brain. They heated the tissue to 700 degrees (I think it was C but I’m not sure). They then fed the ash to animals (I think it was monkeys), they developed CJD. I’m still not convinced on the Prion theory though. Quite a scary thought.

Thanks, but no thanks! I had feared that was the case, but didn’t know enough to be sure. IF anyone is confused, this was from a late night discussion with Seagoon about infectious agents that cause dementia. Creuzfald-Jacob is one of the most famous, along with mad cow disease. Some cannibal tribes ritualistically eat the brains of the deceased and contract such a disease, and the question was whether cremated remains could still transmit the infectious, and now it’s been answered!

Thanks for your long comments. I am starting to understand your ideology better. You know–I think I’m for liberty, too.

The reason I was talking about private interactions is that I don’t expect to find much in common between C and D, but maybe I should keep my mouth shut until I have read more. The proclamation to have ugly art did not frighten me in the slightest.

My browser hates your link. What the hell is wrong with Cornell? I spent a lot of time there, but not recently–mostly in the sciences. There’s not a lot of ideology in studying fungi.

whoever made the voting comment. I’ve taken shit for insisting that people had an obligation to vote. Although I wonder about some people. I know a lady who avoids all the news, because she thinks it is depressing. At election time, her husband will sit down and discuss the options. so bizarre to me. And my widowed friend would consult with her husband before voting. They are both intelligent women. We do our own thing, but we both try very hard to keep up with things.

This was originally part of a rant about local news not keeping people well-informed:
I can see the lack of understanding of the big picture: “You should be worried about your mortgage–it’s hard to get new ones.”–because ours is with Countrywide, which is teetering towards bankruptcy. Well, the people that are paying their mortgages are the cash cows–they have nothing to worry about, which is what the paper said. And that is the obvious deduction. Who would toss aside the only thing bringing in money? And if they went bankrupt, wouldn’t someone buy out their assets?

The link was the incident where Ann Coulter was accosted by left wing radicals at Cornell.

A simple google search of “Cornell + Conservative ratings” turned up quite a few links of anti conservative activity there.
Seemingly like most major universities today Cornell is turning or has turned hard left and Political Correctness runs the place.

Oh, and PC, I think that was me with the voting comment as well.

Sometimes, I find myself quite torn on this question. Yes, more poeple need to vote, But then again, the ones who don’t vote usually usually fail to do so because they are just too damn lazy to drag themselves to the polling place.

If they are too lazy to go vote, do we really want to entrust them with the steering wheel? You just know that if driving to the polls is too much trouble, then they probably make no effort to keep themselves informed about the Country and what is going on in it.

Maybe the answer if for less people to vote. Perhaps, if we were to make it harder, make permission to vote a point of pride. A test of Civics or History, perhaps . .

Yeah, I’ve thought about that, too, but more of a current events test. God–that would be an ideological battle on the questions. I think a lot of people are too clueless to vote (but then no one voted me Empress of the US). However, there are these people that keep up with what’s going on in the world, but fear that their votes would not change anything and would be a waste of time. I’m not sure what to do with those people. I suspect they encompass left and right. Alienation seems widespread across ideologies. I’m sure you know that our percentage of people that vote are really low compared to other countries. So is our political knowledge, too. Sigh.

Yeahhh I have no concept…got it…rattled Deej? Unlike you to make typos like that…LOL

Well, I do type about 120 wpm and sometimes my fingers have a mind of their own…

The fact of the matter is there is no “spirt of the law”…

Maybe in your mind, but not in the real world.

Example: There was a post here the other day where a statute was passed and a word was left out creating an absurd result where it appeared that non-pregnamt girls could get married to anyone regardless of their age.

This obviously was not the intent of the legislature. Now say that nobody noticed this mistake and a year or two later some fucknozzle got busted trying to marry a ten year old girl and he used this statute as a legal defense.

The LETTER of the law would let him off. The SPIRIT of the law would convict him.

Do you understand? I know the example is a little simplistic, but I am in a hurry and I have to leave.

    Maybe you should read this

    and this

Which, of course, is why you guys scream about 9 of the first 10 amendments referring to the people, but then screech that the part that says “…rhe right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” actually refers to the state.

    “You guys”?

You got the wrong “you guy”. The Second Amendment can also trace to the founder’s intent to be a way to stand up to the tyranny of government.

I don’t remember where I hit this, but it’s great satire on your comment.

I probably won’t be on here much for a while, since I’ve got to get this blankety-blank (that’s as close to cussing as I ever get) book written, but I wanted to give a couple more reading suggestions.

First, I would suggest reading Frederic Bastiat. (Yes, a Frenchman, believe it or not!) You should probably start with The Law. Bastiat’s work is second only to Holy Scripture in molding my beliefs.

I would also suggest Milton Friedman, FA Hayek, and Ludwig von Mises.

That should give you a good idea of where people like me (the mean-spirited, intolerant, anti-collectivism types :) ) stand. If you still reject it after that, well, there’s not much else I can say, since Bastiat, Friedman, Hayek, and Mises have expressed it more clearly and more succinctly than I ever could.

If you want something written by somebody that’s still alive, I would suggest Thomas Sowell. (Actually, even if you don’t want something written by somebody that’s still alive, I would suggest Thomas Sowell.)

But Bastiat is where I would begin.

Anyway, good luck with all the reading, and I’ll be back, well, someday. I hope…

I still think it’s useful as a quickie source. At one point, they disabled changes coming from Congress, because their staff was changing the profiles to look better.

Maybe I’m clueless in this case (and this case only!), but they have mis-named an enzyme I work with. I haven’t been able to edit it–it won’t let me. I blame my advisor for the mis-naming. He was the first one to clone it from plants, but he didn’t know anything about it. I can’t believe the reviewers at PNAS let it go through as an oxidase and not an oxygenase. I’ve been giving him shit about it for years, and he says it makes him nervous for me to be at his talks! I would never point out anything that was wrong until afterwards. I’m just so magnanimous.

And you–I can’t figure out who you are! All the men in your dept look pleasant and erudite, which would certainly fit you. None of them look right-wing; you guys blend in well. I’ll give you a perfect example; the 2nd Amd. Arugument (currrently under appeal), concerning Gun ownership in D.C.
That law just got overturned by the SC. Hello? And why is that?
Because some body of local politicians once again tried to inject their own read (spirt of the law) onto the 2nd Amendment, banned gun ownership in D.C, and it’s now been over turned as UN-CONSITUTIONAL by the highest court in the land.

You site the recent case in AK..fine, If the SPIRT of the law is such a omni-present force then just why in the fuck is the AK legislature going to hold a special session to correct the problem ?

And lastly the original argument was your statement about how the Press was put in place as a check to the powers of the U.S. Government, and I said it was not.

You’ve yet to prove that wrong, but gee like most libs once they got them self painted into a corner, you have done a fine job of muddying the waters with libral horse shit about the “spirt of the law” and implying I and others on this blog obviously cannot know what we’re talking about because we’re not law students. Conservative Coalition Assembles To Warn Americans About Agenda For ‘Hush-Hush’ North American ‘Merge-Fest’ In Quebec.

Lancaster, PA/ August 17, 2007 - The Constitution Party, joins conservative groups and a growing number in Congress urging Americans to speak out against the formation of a North American Union (NAU).

A meeting, planned for Aug-20-21 in Quebec, will advance the well-developed plan despite a near blackout by U.S. media.

The summit, sponsored by The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, a vehicle by which the NAU is being advanced, will be led by President George Bush of the United States, Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada, and President Felipe Calderon of Mexico to plan an EU-type merger joining all three countries.

Former Director of the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity, Howard Phillips said: “This summit is being held away from the scrutiny of the American people. It was declared off limits to those who oppose it, and that speaks volumes. The SPP is part of a treacherous scheme to incrementally merge Canada, the United States, and Mexico in a manner similar to that, which brought the European Union into being over a span of 50 years. Lost liberties and a lower standard of living would be the inevitable result if our borders with Mexico and Canada were to be erased. Americans won’t want to be part of that global nightmare.” Phillips, founder of the fast-growing Constitution Party, one-time presidential candidate and the leader of the Conservative Caucus (www.conservativeusa.org) will be joined by a coalition of American and Canadian leaders assembled in Quebec to speak out against the proposed merger of the three countries at a press conference.

The press conference is scheduled for August 20th, 2007 at 10 am at the Ottawa Marriott Hotel, Ottawa, Canada.

“The NAU and the SPP are a virtual toxic alphabet soup being cooked up behind closed doors so Americans won’t have a clue they’re about to lose their rights and freedoms until it’s too late,” warned Constitution Party National Committee Chairman Jim Clymer. “Just ask the people in Europe who are now dealing with the disastrous effects of the E.U.”, Clymer further noted.

Jerome Corsi, Ph.D., New York Times best-selling author of the new book The Late, Great U.S.A.-The Coming Merger with Mexico and Canada will be covering the SPP summit from Quebec. Corsi is an internationally known expert on the clandestine effort to force Americans into an unconstitutional fusion with other countries.

The Constitution Party joins opponents of the SPP/NAU and supports proposed legislation (HCR40) introduced by Congressman Virgil Goode (R-VA) which calls for an end to the merger that would result in a North American Union (NAU). In addition, the Constitution Party expresses appreciation to the 18 states introducing resolutions calling for a halt to work on the NAU.

    But still, Wikipedia?

Granted, Wikipedia can be compromised, and recently someone created an online tool to show some very interesting people and groups who have been caught editing Wiki entries.

    A couple of interesting examples:

    The CIA

    The FBI

    Democratic Party

    Republican Party

    Bob Jones University

(amazing that they would edit the Wiki for Mary Poppins)

    Diebold

    ExxonMobil

    FOX News

    NYT

    Here is your “a-HAH!” moment:

    Al-Jazeera

You can actually see the corrections that have been made by clicking on one of the links under “diff”.

The reason why I use Wiki is because it can be a great STARTING point. Many Wiki entries are footnoted, which will allow you to research backwards and find more reliable sources.

I was in a hurry yesterday, and I made the assumption that you would have enough interest to follow up instead of simply attacking sources. The Wiki entry was factual, but like most NeoCons I know, you only see things in black or white:

Wiki is not always a reliable source, therefore EVERYTHING on Wiki is ALL wrong.

You could say the same thing about FOX, CNN, MSNBC, and every other media source out there.

No, it was a slow Saturday morning, with only eight of us there. It was the early-bird 7AM auction that hardly anyone goes to.

I got $15.385 based on my zip code. You also didn’t put in the Dual Power Seats, F&R Side Air Bags, and the Navigation System.

Thanks. I had mentioned the thing about Congressional profiles being changed in my post, so I was aware there was some problem. Speaking of your students, the previous NYT piece on Wiki mentioned a history professor. A number of students had made the same mistake on a test, and it turned out that they all got it from a Wiki piece. (It was very obscure for me. I forget what the topic was.)

I don’t use it much, except as a quick intro to something I hadn’t heard of it. You can get a general idea about something.

I was following up on Ten-Ten’s link about this North American Union thing, which in some circles is considered serious conspiracy theory. I followed some links from the constitution party website which led to the conservative national policy group (the Council of National Policy). Fred! spoke to them in the spring of this year. Well, this was the repo auction, and the floor was set at $1100. I am guessing that is what the previous owner had left to pay on it.

I have been to some of the later auctions and I probably would have had to pay $7500 - $10000 if it had been run through those auctions.

The Auction I went to only happens that early once or twice a month, and it is exclusive to dealers who have bought a lot of cars in the past 90 days.

My friend is an auto broker — he buys for several car lots and also does private car brokering nationwide. He averages about 500 vehicles a month, for which he collects 10 percent of the purchase price for the vehicles going to the lots, and whatever the agreement he has on the private brokerships.

So obviously, his overhead is almost non-existent, and he just rakes in the cash without having to do much.

    You must mean Conservapedia

For a group of people who dislike Wikipedia, they aren’t above copying the concept and using the software.

They say that “Wikipedia has a strong liberal bias” yet I haven’t see Wiki run “Liberal courses”, put down Conservatism as a general policy, or disallow Conserative thought.

Contrast Conservapedia’s entry about Wikipedia with Wikipedia’s entry about Conservapedia. One sounds like it is foaming at the mouth, while the other offers a rather unbiased description of the other without promoting itself.

Conservapedia has roughly 9000 registered users, but apparently, 4000 of them are permanently blocked.

The thing about Wiki is that ANYONE can add or edit a topic. Then someone else can come in behind them and edit or add some more. Eventually, you wind up with a concensus. You can’t do that with Conservapedia. If you stray off the narrow path, you will get banned.

As I said above, I use Wiki a lot as a STARTING point because in most cases there are footnoted material that can lead you to more stuff. Obviously it shouldn’t ever be used as a difinative answer to anything.

It isn’t a case of “allowing” it. Perhaps you didn’t notice my comment #64 where I mentioned the tool someone wrote that let’s you see WHO has been monkeying with Wiki?

It looks like EVERYONE has been making changes, Democrats, Republicans, our Government, the Vatican.

Changes like that get made, then, they are changed back within hours, because there is a group that monitors this stuff.

It somehow managed to change the fonts on my computer. I was NOT pleased.

I don’t see how it could. Besides, I would be more afraid of MySpace than a Wiki site.

Another thing: There are hundreds, if not thousands of different Wikis out there. Some look exactly like Wikipedia, because they use the same software. I almost installed a Wiki here on this domain just to have you cringe at the thought of being so close to the eeeevil liberal software.

But I figured that would be a waste of my time and energy, just to have a good laugh. (Okay, a LOT of time and enery — it would take me about an hour with this slow-assed server)

Since this is open topic, I thought I would mention something I heard from one of my neighbors about John Wayne. Some of you seem to have a fetish about him. She has lived here for 45 years. Apparently, he spent a lot of time around here, and he was staying at this REALLY PRICEY guest ranch in Solvang. He took a bus to some bar and at closing hour, took everybody in the place back to the ranch in the bus for a party.

I keep hearing nice things about him.

Do you ever come up to the Central Coast? I would consider stopping down to say hello, but I’m afraid to drive in LA.

I may be coming down, from Oregon, with my son in early October. Grandma can’t drive anymore and is giving her car to her favorite (only) Grandson…road trip for me and the boy. I told him I’d get him up there as long as he’s got the funds to get us home….insurance…gas…food. I’ll pay for motels, cause he’d want to drive straight home and I’m to old to make that kind of trip anymore.

Believe me, I’d be afraid to drive in Santa Barbara (?), or wherever. All cities seem to have quirks about how to drive. It just takes a few months to learn them, then you can kinda fit in with the natives. I grew up with L.A. traffic, so it just is normal, frustrating, but normal to me.
