The Rott is banned in Iran.

I know, I know — it is disappointing.  You tried so hard to be accepted, but what can you do?

I was checking server speeds through Host-Tracker, which checks server response times with 78 nodes all around the world.  It just so happens that Host Iran, THE Internet gateway in Tehran, Iran no longer allows traffic to visit this site.

I check all of the sites I work on every week and it would allow traffic a week ago, and it allows traffic to a lot of other sites, but no longer.

So now you’ve done it — you’ve gone and pissed off the Mullahs.

BTW:  IsraPundit just got banned this week also.

    Guys,

I understand that means we are officially hated by the government. I would also consider that a good thing. My concern is that people who could benefit from from reading the blog now cannot. It would bring me more joy to have the opposition reading us than to have been brought to the authority’s attention as being evil.

It appears there is one proxy server in Iran.

I had forgotten how much I hate them. I had followed the directions word for word to set up my computer as a proxy server for the university library. It decimated my internet access. I was lucky there was a Mac group I could e-mail for help from a neighbor’s house for help in recreating the internet access. Now I use a VPN.

Yes, the coward’s approach–slyly ban access to truth, rather than dealing with it. As I’ve said before, His Rottieness will probably never receive a fartwa, because the Pisslamists know neither he nor we would be in the slightest intimidated by it. Indeed, it would just make us laugh crazily, flip open our thumb-breaks and say silling things like, “So, do you feel lucky, punk?” Still, DJ, isn’t there some way to “spoof” the Iranian server into letting the Rott through–maybe masquerading as The Burkha Barn or such?

I heard about this today, some suspicious types photographing odd areas of the ferries up here. If you listen to Kirby Wilbur on KVI, he’s posted a photo taken of the individuals by a ferry crewman HERE

but we can’t be profilin’ now can we……

I always thought that a ferry or cruise ship would make a juicy terrorist target, especially when it’s under way or coming into port fully loaded. It might just be the conspiracy theorist in me, but I also thought the attacks on the USS Cole, and the zodiac boat attack on that French oil tanker were test cases to see what damage could be wrought against various ships.

Hey, Jaybear: I was thinking. Is there any way to start a public awareness campaign to get ferry riders to bring life jackets with them? How hard can it be to stash a few? And those window-breaking devices? In the event of an attack or other disaster, it’s just one more survival tool. Anything to raise the odds in our favor a little bit. The ferries don’t have enough equipment to serve all of the passengers, and even if they did it might not necessarily be accessible.

    Kwong,

I found a really hefty ball peen hammer laying in the middle of the road about 10 years ago. That is my escape tool if I find myself in a sinking car. I carry in my Explorer, a huge first aid kit as well as a Ka-Bar knife, flashlight, divers whistle (really loud), and thermal survival blankets….I need to buy a bigger rig if I want to pack life vests. Maybe a small self inflating air mattress or something would do the trick.

What might be a better public awareness campaign is to let the people know how hamstrung the Seattle PD and other law enforcement agencies are regarding profiling suspicious individuals. We’ll never be secure until we, as a nation and society, lose our crippling fear of offending everyone.

I always thought that a ferry or cruise ship would make a juicy terrorist target, especially when it’s under way or coming into port fully loaded.

This is the nightmare that all of us in the maritime industry (even the leftist dopes) fear every day. Our ports are not as safe as they should be. The USCG has made some progress since 9/11, but they’re hamstrung by politics.

The ferries don’t have enough equipment to serve all of the passengers, and even if they did it might not necessarily be accessible.

Times have changed since RMS Titanic went down. EVERY waterborne vessel in the territorial waters of the US (even foreign-flag ones), from large passenger ships down to single-seat kayaks, is required by law to carry enough lifejackets for its entire rated complement of passengers and crew. The lifesaving gear must also be regularly maintained and inspected, and accessible to passengers and crew. The jackets may not be laying out in plain sight, but they ARE there. The vessel would not be permitted to sail without them.
I used to ride the Seattle ferries all the time when I lived in Kitsap County. Because I work in the industry, the first thing I did my first time on board one of them was find out for myself where the lifejackets were stowed and how to deploy the liferafts.
If anyone here regularly rides ferries or passenger ships, I urge you to get the crew - meaning the deck dept. or engineers, not the espresso sellers - to show you where the lifesaving gear is located and how to use it (if they don’t already do so).
Riding and operating ships at sea is inherently dangerous! Only constant vigilance and attention to detail keeps us safe.

We watch too much television, and get too many stereotypes pounded into our heads. These two guys could be my next door neighbors — except they don’t ride the ferries.

As far as the ferry being a target, it is pretty limited in its number of victims. One city bus in downtown Seattle during rush hour would have more of an impact than a sluggish boat carrying maybe 200 passengers and 100 cars across a unpopulated stretch of water.

It is just the typical scare tactics to make you feel afraid. It is hard to tell who is trying to scare us more — the terrorists or our own government.

Jay, a lot of others support the terrorists, too, overtly or covertly- either with material support or just non-denunciation.

There are muslim organizations which do denounce terrorism link link

I haven’t read these sites, just a quick google

I’d say the issue is that the Western media is generally anti-domestic terrorist, and gives little time to the pro-nutjob lobby, while the media in the islamic world is generally pro-terrorist, and gives little or no time to the anti-terrorist movement.

This means we don’t wee the pro-domestic terrorist groups in the West, and in Islamic nations they don’t see that there are muslims who have the nerve to disagree with the hardliners.

Maybe they were engineer students. Maybe someone read a lot more into something that wasn’t really there.

Some people see a strange-looking foreigner and suddenly everything that strange-looking guy is doing looks “strange”.

How many women sitting on that ferry instinctively clutch their purse a little closer when then see a black man coming towards them?

Would you pay as close attention to two white college-aged kids taking pictures? Would they be acting “strange” if you noticed them? I’m guessing that you wouldn’t even notice them, just as you probably wouldn’t notice a person car prowling in the parking lot at Southcenter in broad daylight.

but that doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t look both ways before crossing the street does it?

I think that there is a distinct difference. Cars are normally traveling on the road you are trying to cross, so you have to look for the break in the traffic to get across. Terrorists aren’t routinely riding the Washington State Ferries and blowing them up, so you wouldn’t need to be looking out for them.

I am not saying that you should overlook strange behaviour, but you shouldn’t automatically assume that dark-skinned foreigners with cameras taking pictures are doing anything more sinister that just taking pictures. You don’t have to understand the significance of their pictures but should they have to explain themselves to you or even the cops you choose to call on them?

Besides, if I wanted to take some pictures of something like you are suggesting, I think I could do so without attracting any attention.

I watched three kids act strangely in the security line at SeaTac airport once, they would move partially through the line then jump out and stand aside point things out and talk..then get back in line, jump out again and talk some more. I watched them do this three times, when I called it to the attention of the cops at the scanners and pointed them out, they did it again!! is that suspicious in your book? do you ignore behavior like that? Obviously the cops took it seriously as they hauled all three of them away for questioning….and guess what, they were young middle eastern males. Does that make me a racist? am I guilty of profiling? Perhaps you missed it?

There’s a definite media slant coloring terrorist acts- and yes, most terrorist acts going on these days are conducted by muslims.

There are many flavors of muslim terror though, muslim nationalist terrorism (chechnya type), sectarian terror (Sunni/Shia Iraq type) and international wahabbist batshit crazy slaughter the infidel terrorism (the rest)

But there are also many, many muslims out there, and many of them live in pretty batshit crazy areas. I think the wahabbist type is by far the most threatening to the rest of the world.

    Stop right there, Jay.

The photo that King5 and Michelle Malkin posted depict what are men who are probably Middle Eastern. Someone obviously took pictures of them because they were noticed, and probably stereotyped.

You see the photo, and you hear that they are being sought for identification because they MIGHT be terrorist suspects based on someone THINKING they might be suspicious.

Yes, there is definitely a lot of evil Islamic fundamentalism in the world, and it should be stamped out. I did say that attacks from outside our border would probably be by Muslims. I DID NOT SAY THAT THERE IS NOT MUSLIM TERRORISM. However, there was a comment in a previous post about not having to worry about other races, and that is not true. That is what I was specifically addressing. I think the percentage of muslims in this country who are planning terrorism is much greater than the percentage of whites.

However, I could pop off a handful of whites within a minute, and I forgot the guy from the World Church of the Creator that went on a multi-state killing spree of minorities. I totally agree that most Americans are not in accordance with the views of these people. But they do exist, and they don’t always get a lot of press. How many ordinary people have heard of the Army of God?

You probably wouldn’t like this organization, but they provide info to the FBI and are highly reliable. They monitor white, Latino, and black hate groups. Here is a picture of Bufford in his Aryan Nations uniform. Unless he had a really quick conversion, Islam my ass. I would post the picture, but I’m not sure how to with this mouse.
    http://www.splcenter.org/intel/history.jsp

Timothy McVeigh based his attack on “The Turner Diaries”–a Nazi novel on how to start a race war. The book starts out with the bombing of a federal building. He had white supremacist ties. I would be my life in this information, but here is a link:
    http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/notorious/mcveigh/dawning_1.html

Why do you think these bastards were associated with Islam? I would LOVE to see your sources.

I would agree that moderate muslims are not speaking out like they should. There was a peace rally in Indonesia. There was a peace document signed by several hundred muslim intellectuals after 9/11. (I fly around a lot and am not sure where it is.) Everybody hates them, and someone nice on the site wants to burn them all alive (yikes), but there is the text of a petition from the CAIR website from 2004. I don’t know how many people signed it.

“The “Not in the Name of Islam” petition states: “We, the undersigned Muslims, wish to state clearly that those who commit acts of terror, murder and cruelty in the name of Islam are not only destroying innocent lives, but are also betraying the values of the faith they claim to represent. No injustice done to Muslims can ever justify the massacre of innocent people, and no act of terror will ever serve the cause of Islam. We repudiate and dissociate ourselves from any Muslim group or individual who commits such brutal and un-Islamic acts. We refuse to allow our faith to be held hostage by the criminal actions of a tiny minority acting outside the teachings of both the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.”

You know, not to be conspiratorial, it could be (and I could well be wrong) that these things are out there, and just don’t get a lot of press.

DJ: The fact of the matter is that the FBI believes the ferry system has been under surveillance by terrorists. In 2004, a man with known ties to terrorists was observed riding different ferries in the company of other people they did not recognize.

The people mentioned recently behaved suspiciously enough to attract the attention of a ferry crew (a crewmember took the photos) and several passengers as well.

Call it ridiculous paranoia if you want to, but I think it’s a pattern, especially with recent attempts in Britain and Scotland. Now I think the one guy at least looks pretty “white”. Walking down the street, he probably wouldn’t draw my attention at all, dressed in his REI clothes. However, taking pictures of stairwells and asking in depth questions about the ferry system, and taking several trips in succession is blatantly odd, especially given the cost of a trip these days! I don’t know how you can shrug it off as nothing of concern. I don’t think we have the luxury of thinking that way any more. Too bad, ’cause I’d like to go back to that life myself.

PC: It isn’t the “brown-ness”; it’s the behavior. To be sure, most of the Islamists who have perpetrated attacks thus far have looked like Middle Easterners. However, I don’t think anyone is so naive as to believe that “white” people are exempt from becoming Islamists. So anyone behaving strangely like this should trigger suspicion.

whites are less likely, but we’re talking fractions of a percent in either case.

Whites are a lower fraction, Japanese one-legged octogenarian sushi chefs lower still. At the end of the day, the actual terrorist percentage in the West is very small, even combining all the flavors, muslim, christian, anti-tax, anti-abortion, ecoterrorists, Quebec liberationists, etc, etc, etc…

The US has a population of about 300 mil, and there are about 1.5 mil muslims link.

Even if there are a few thousand (lets say 5 thou) muslim terrorists in the US, which I think is an enormous overestimation, that would still be only .3% of all muslims who are terrorists.

If you add people who can look stereotypically muslim, say, East Indians, SE Asians, Copts, etc, and subtract the ones that don’t fit the stereotype (richard reid type converts, black African muslims, Chinese, thai and filipino muslims, etc), odds get quite muddy.

As I said, suspicious behaviour makes someone suspicious in my book.

Anyway, in that area aren’t you at risk for nutjob eco-loon ELF terrorism? They regularly maim and kill loggers and miners in Canada with sabotage and spiking.

What is your problem? I’m not giving a comprehensive list of domestic terrorism. I didn’t mention the ecoterrorism that Seagoon mentioned above. I think there a lot of minor incidents that happen that we never hear about–the N Carolina Klan ones, for example. If they were muslim, it would have been all over the news.

Feel free to mention that your main attack was wrong. But you don’t admit that you’re wrong, do you?

“Breathlessly throwing it in looks pretty desperate eh?”

-what exactly is breathless: commenting on a few high-profile domestic terrorists? Honestly, I’m not sure what you mean by “throwing it in”

-nothing with me is breathless. Since I propose the minority view, I spend a lot of time on my posts.

All I’ve really said is that white people commit terrorist crimes also. There is no way you can argue that, so you cough up spurious numbers. Of course, there are more terrorist acts commited in the US by muslims than by any other group. Although, in the US, there’s no way it’s a 1/30,000 ratio. (Now if you’re talking the whole world, that would be different). I wonder if we could come up with the exact ratio. That might be worth looking into, although I really need to work on science stuff and legal papers.

I never said this, but someone did. I think we should also be wary of suspicioous behavior by whites.

Please show me one case, and not McVeigh since the nut-jobs he ran with were more racist oriented, of a militia group committing an act of terrorism in the US. This one issue where the SPLC lost all credibility with me (They didn’t have much to begin with). They blanket labeled all militia groups as “racist” back in the 90’s. Every militia group that I knew of was overtly anti-racist, embracing the ideals of justice for all. They WERE however vehemently opposed to the gun grabbing going on, anti-Clinton, and conservative, so the SPLC targeted them and called them racist. Typical liberal reaction, anyone who disagrees with their utopian world view are automatically racist.
I laughed my ass off watching TV when some hack from the SPLC told a black man that the militia group he represented was a racist organization.

I’m not “worrying”, I’m being alert and vigilant. If only we’d been more like that prior to 9/11.

As far as suspicious behavior goes, it’s suspicious if I think it is. I didn’t spend 40 years on this planet without learning a thing or two about what is normal and what is unusual, nor have I missed the statistical likelihood of muslims being terrorists as opposed to, say, skinheaded morons.

Sure, I’m profiling. Everybody with an ounce of sense would do that, particularly since we don’t have infinite resources. If we had the time to investigate every single individual in the country doing something “strange”, then by all means we should go for it. But we don’t, so we have to apply our resources where they’re most likely to produce results.

It’s all statistics, nothing personal, no matter how much certain grievance groups and mongers like to paint it that way.

And if that offends somebody, so be it. I don’t really give a flip. At least I can confidently say that I give much less of a flip about it than about risking death and/or mutilation out of fear of “hurting somebody’s feewings.”

If they are taking pictures of areas of the boat and not the F’in scenery, then yes!

This isn’t an isolated incident, DJ. Multiple trips, and constant checking out areas not of general interest to tourists or commuters to the point that it caught the crew members’ interest IS noteworthy.

As for the Post-Intelligence’s refusal to publish the picture out of concern for their ‘civil rights, when they had no problem publishing pictures of the lily white Duke LaCrosse players, I’m starting to think that there IS something to the liberal bleating about racism, only, as I have come to expect, they have it backwards.

The photo that King5 and Michelle Malkin posted depict what are men who are probably Middle Eastern. Someone obviously took pictures of them because they were noticed, and probably stereotyped.

DJ: Stereotyping isn’t as easy as you might think! Especially if the individual being categorized is not wearing clothing consistent with the stereotype or in an environment he/she would stereotypically frequent.

The reason I’m saying this is because the one man really doesn’t strike me as “obviously” Middle Eastern. As I said before, if I met him on the street I wouldn’t even notice him. He blends in with the rest of us pretty damned well. As you pointed out, he could be someone’s neighbor.

My kids get Muse magazine, and a year or so ago they had an article on stereotyping. They presented several faces - no jewelry or makeup, just head shots so no visible clothing, no background - and asked readers to match the ethnicity of each face with the labels provided. I only got about half of them right, and apparently that was typical of most people who had taken the quiz.

So there was probably more to this situation than two “Middle Eastern” men innocently riding the ferry. I am sure the ferry crews have received some sort of training on terrorist behavior, and these two must have been behaving in a disturbing manner.

I guess what it boils down to is this: the FBI just wants to talk to these men. If they were plain old passengers, it will come out in the wash. Sure, they may be frightened and inconvenienced. But no more so than people who get a thorough grilling at the airport. If they are here illegally, they may be deported. So?? If there is nothing found, then the men will go and the public will be notified. Nobody really gets hurt by erring on the side of caution.

On the other hand, if they are would-be terrorists, then an ounce of prevention just saved us a pounding.

I can’t go through my life worrying about whether or not some idiot is going to blow me up. If I start worrying, then they have already won.

No, they haven’t won just because they made you worry. If you stop doing the things you normally do, if you curtail your activities - then that’s another thing. However, being prepared for an emergency and being observant of your surroundings is simply prudent. People who live in the Midwest have storm cellars. Most people keep fire extinguishers in their kitchens. It’s a fact of the times: we now have to consider that we may face a terrorist attack, so we should be prepared rather than surprised.

    DJ,

Tell me you don’t look at a hispanic person walking down the street or shopping in a store and immediately think he or she is illegal. Tell me you don’t see two young men looking very much like the two in the picture and think they might be terrorists.

I don’t….there I told you. I judge people by their actions and behavior toward me. I am not the one who uses terms like “brown people”, that is a term used almost exclusively by people on the left.

Yes Jay there are some bad actors out there, and probably a lot of them are “brown-skinned”. I just think we run the danger of becoming over-sensitive to suspicious behavior if we see Middle Eastern males walking around doing what we might consider “strange stuff”.

Strange stuff like photographing wheel houses and structural supports of various ferry boats, and learning to fly but not land, and “strategically” seating themselves on airplanes, and bowing to pray to mecca in full public view of averyone just to see what kind of reaction they get….
know what Dave? if the shoe fits etc. etc…what might be in the Arabs best interest is to clean their OWN house, purge the jihadis from their culture and disown them, take it upon themselves to establish their good name in civilized society.

I remember an incident in my high school. This Hispanic kid was a real trouble maker…stealing, disrupting classes, starting fights…during a lunch period, a digital camera was stolen from an adjacent classroom. It just so happens that this kid shows up the next day with a “new” digital camera and is flashing it all over the place. The teacher whose camera was stolen immediately targeted this kid as the perp. I had this kid in my class and got a good look at the camera, it wasn’t one of ours. He had already been asked where hegot the camera and where he was at the time the camera was stolen. I stood up for him, telling everyone that he didn’t steal it, when this kid found out that I defended him he came to talk to me. He thanked me and asked why everyone was so suspicious of him all the time. I told him that because of his past reputation for doing things like that…he had painted a big bullseye on himself and made himself a huge target for the finger pointers and accusers, and the only way to get the light off of him was to straighten up and play by the rules…..

Same thing goes for Middle Eastern males DJ, count down the number of terrorist incidents that have been carried out by ME males and you can see why they are looked at with suspicion, they have that bullseye on themselves from the numerous terrorist actions carried out by their brethren. They need to clean their own house up…simple as that.

In the meantime, if my “over-sensitivity” results in the thwarting of a terrorist act then so be it, I’ll continue to keep my guard up thank you very much…..

I know that most militias are interested in defense and not terrorism. I actually did hesitate to mention the Patriot militias. It was my understanding that they were more dangerous groups. The final citation was not an SPLC group–it was a newspaper article.

“In 1997, militia members gathered in central Texas allegedly to plan to attack a military base on Independence Day.”

I’ll dig and try to come up 1) a more substantial citation for that and 2) see if there is anything more in general. It’s probably a way more obscure issue than the other ones mentioned. When I have time. I’m making myself late for a dr.’s appt.

Again, I never said we shouldn’t worry about Islamic terrorism–just that there were other forms.

    Thanks–I’ll dig like a gopher.

    http://www.libertypost.org/cgi-bin/readart.cgi?ArtNum=184492&Disp=12&Trace=on

I don’t how how reliable this site is, but it does site a BBC documentary (OK–they be biased, but I bet they check their sources). This is about a mysterious informant working with the FBI and German intelligence who was involved with the neo-Nazi group and McVeigh planning the bombing. This information was not presented at his trial, and there is a paper trail about it that was not filed with the main OC case information.

However that does not mean that he did not meet with Iraqis. If so, there was an Islamic connection. However, he was clearly hard right. I wonder about pragmatic reasons, like joining together for terrorism against the US or obtaining explosives. Also, I would need to figure out how reliable that book is. I will dig! The authors probably have some articles in addition to their book. I can probably get it from the Univ library. I’m going to die if I get any more to read, but that would go to the priority on the list. There is another book on Amazon.

The whole thing is fucking weird. There was that report of another person at the truck and something about a gang of Nazi bankrobbers. Initially, I wrote them off as conspiracy theories, but it seems that people made a strong case for their existence. Officials sent a surveillance photo of a suspect to the FBI, and they shredded it. Also very strange was executing him before the lead FBI investigator was done talking to him. That came up in an NYT article recently.

This is a conspiracy theory kind of case, and it would not surprise me if people came popping off with Islamic connections during a time of war against them. I’m not going to dismiss anything out of hand
    1) intensive curiousity
    2) moral obligation

I had always wondered if it was a bungled informant operation. That’s what that article suggested.

Thank you very much for mentioning that book.

By the way, did you notice the remarkable lack of jokes about Ryder’s trucks?

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but it fits.

I worked with a kid who I’d known since he was 5 and went borderline skinhead…shaved, losta tats, and he was a big boy. He had blown off the racist crap as stupid, but stuck with the look.

Almost three out of 5 days, this one Glendale cop would stop him within four blocks of home. Was this racial profiling?

My oldest friend was a Lieutenant on the force and I could have mentioned it, but the kid said he knew that if he looked like that, he was probably get hassled and he could live with it.

I was just pissed when it made him late for work and kept telling him to factor it in and leave 15 minutes earlier.

One problem with profiling is that it can really misdirect the hunt for a criminal- at least when profile is taken more seriously than evidence.

For example, the sniper hunt was initially for a white man, because blacks don’t fit the spree killer profile, and the initial hunt for McVeigh was misdirected as looking for middle-eastern men, because white guys don’t blow up buildings.

Ironically, it was the McVeigh profile that influenced the sniper search…

Just reinforcing that suspicious behavior warrants suspicion, regardless of profile.

This must have the guy you mentioned who became friends with your employees of different races and stopped being a rascist skinhead.

I think it’s harassment for the same cop to stop the guy repeatedly when it has turned out there is no reason for it. I don’t think it’s racial profiling. The guy has an appearance that correlates with people associated with violence. It’s not because he is white per se.

Although sometimes there is age profiling. Perfectly harmless and harmless looking teenagers get harassed in certain areas.

I know you are white because I’ve seen your picture, unless you are deviously substituting another. :em93: You could probably walk down the street without a problem. I probably could also, even though I have an alternative appearance.

I’m avoiding the issue of muslim profiling, because last night’s arguing was really exhausting, and I’m argued out.

As an intellectual exercise, what if I said this was a Hispanic cop that stopped him all the time? I know you’re argued out because we aren’t going to solve the whole thing here, but I have to ask.

know you are white because I’ve seen your picture, unless you are deviously substituting another. :em93:

Yeah that’s me in all my glory…tall, skinny and handsome as ever at 50 . :em93:

Though, back round my twenties, when my hair was actually a bit shorter that it gets now, where I’m an upstanding member of the community, I got constant attention of the local Deputies, Course I grew up in a very low crime area and they’d stick the borderline grads of the Sheriff’s Dept., who had just come out of two years duty at County Central Jail, so they just knew these teenagers were up to no good.

The cops never busted me for anything, but the next day, my parents, who had (somehow) heard about it…sometimes that would screw up a few weeks of plans. Didn’t matter if I was right or wrong, and I understood it.

I never did anything overly destructive, but those times I pushed the edge and didn’t get caught….I figured they evened out.

Don’t worry about it. You don’t argue–you discuss and are pleasant. I won’t feel like I’ve waged war after I’ve finished.

I wouldn’t consider it racial profiling if any cop stopped him, because he’s a skinhead (I know there are non-racist ones). His appearance correlates with potential violence.

I wouldn’t consider it racial profiling if a white cop stopped a Hispanic gang youth. If there were specific things that correlated with criminal activity, like certain tatoos, I would think that would be an appropriate reason. However, if he stopped every Hispanic kid he saw, then I would call it profiling.

I think it’s NYC where they are massively harassing black teenagers just minding their own business. I think that is wrong and also stupid, because you want people to be comfortable going to the police when there is a crime or helping out as a witness.

To me, it’s not profiling if there is some reason besides race.

His appearance correlates with potential violence.

After 3 months of this, do you think the cop might have been profiling, not looking at the facts? I know the guy wasn’t doing anything, yet the cop was sure he was. Kinda like DWB (Driving While Black), which is considered racial profiling. You explain the difference.

If there were specific things that correlated with criminal activity, like certain tatoos, I would think that would be an appropriate reason. However, if he stopped every Hispanic kid he saw, then I would call it profiling.

The problem is, they go “out of uniform” If they’re devout muslims, they shouldn’t be shaving, yet the 9-11 a$$holes for alah, are all without full beards, if they had a beard. If we could narrow it down to ME’s with beards, that would make it easier.

I’d say it boils down to a three point check- if they have three suspicious marks, they’re worth investigating. Like the old Heinlein (I think) quote:

“Once is happenstance, twice coincidence, three times- enemy action.” or something to that effect.

For the ferry guys: 1. Young. All youth seem to be somewhat suspected (and usually rightfully so…., to an extent) 2. Middle-eastern looking (again, by itself, nothing. Even young and ME is not unusual or definitively suspicious) 3. Repeatedly pushing security limits and photographing structural areas of the ship. (odd behavior if taken alone. suspicious when considered with previous two factors).

Now, if we look at SoCal’s example: 1. Young. (same deal) 2. (skinhead and violent looking, similar deal) 3. at best, in a neighborhood unsuited to his appearance. (SoCal, is that the case?) If he was in say, an upscale (or mostly ethnic) neighborhood, then the suspicion, and the stop, would be pretty reasonable- the first time. After the first few though, it becomes harassment, because the third factor is removed- the man has a right to be there passing from home to work.

    That’s my take on it.

Maybe we disagree on how racial profiling is done. To me, it is investigating them solely on the basis of their race or religion and not for any reason like specific behavior.

I go back to the harassment. Initial stops I can see, but for 3 months–ridiculous. Again, he has made changes to his appearance that correlate with violent groups. That’s why I don’t think it’s profiling for the first stop or two. After that is unreasonable. With the way he looks, he’s not just some average white kid on his way to work.

Yeah, but the gang units are really up on who is in the gangs. They would know gang kids out of uniform.

Yeah, I know they were all clean-shaven (and some were into porn!?). But there were other things about them. There were the people getting the suspicious flight school training–the one (or more?) that didn’t care about learning how to land. Israel had sent a list of terrorists in our country, and two of them were on the list. Actually, I’m not sure if that’s the same two the CIA fucked up and didn’t put on a watch list until the last minute. (They are 2 sets of info from 2 different places, but I think they might be referring to the same incident.) There were red flags for some of the specific people. We didn’t need to profile them racially–we had specific intel, if it had been dealt with properly.

Actually, in general, I am opposed to racial profiling, but in a situation with a proposed huge terrorist attack looming from the Middle East, I would not object to extra screening of muslim men. People could screech, but that never stops this administration from doing anything (unless someone gets a court injunction).

Granted I am prone to paranoia, but I really hope I am not on the no-fly list. My stepdaughter is getting married on the East Coast.

And that was done here in Hebron so its completely in a different ballpark as US attacks.

So wow yippi ki yay! mcveigh was in what 1996 ?

Rabbi meir kahane was killed by a arab terrorist in ny, ari halberstam was gunned down by arab terrorists in ny.. so what I can bring up alot of cases.

Homegrown terrorists usualy do it out of hate, revenge, insanity, stupidity.. NOT in the name of religion!

Just to prove my point, mention meir kahane here and DB and DJ will start bashing him and they are both jewish.

Meanwhile kahane never called for large scale killing’s of arabs, rather he just wanted to move them to one of the other 22 arab countries where they came from.

We do it here in israel and we prevent hundreds of attacks daily!

Those that say that racial profiling alienates the muslim populations of western countries and makes them sympathetic to terror are so full of shit.

The EXACT opposite goes into effect in the case where the population did not sympathize with the terrorists to begin with.

It will cause muslims to speak up and denounce terrorists and distance themselfs from the ones commiting violence.

    Elchonon, apples and oranges here-

We do it here in israel and we prevent hundreds of attacks daily!

You’re in a country engaged in essentially a simmering war. It’s not racial profiling when you’re surrounded by the enemy, and they’re infiltrating.

That’s like saying Mexicans crossing the border are being racially profiled-it’s not race, it’s nationality, and that’s very different within the US or Canada.

And exactly can they ‘distance’ themselves if they are being judged on race?

Actions should merit suspicion, not race. As I said above, hit three causes for suspicion and it’s pretty reasonable to pull them up. Arabs crossing into Israel? 1. de facto war. 2. they are the enemy civilians at best. 3. they’re trying to cross into (or are in) Israel.

Very, very reasonable to pull any arab up under those circumstances.

Now, in North America, even if they are prime demographic (young males) and showing they are overtly muslim (not Hindu, or Jain, or Copt, or Sikh, or any other similarly appearanced minority), that’s only two out of three- not good enough in my book.

However, the porn viewership is good news. Men who can get off in the real world are less likely to pursue virgins in the next, in my opinion.

    Elchonon
    Welcome back.

I never said that Arabs were not doing the majority of terrorism in this country. All I said is that white organizations do it, too. It’s more prevalent than people think, because it usually doesn’t get a lot of press, but that doesn’t mean it compares to Arab terrorism. However, how much press did it get when a white supremacist had a huge amount of cyanide and was planning on attacking a building? You would think people might have heard of that. I would think that violent set of disagreements on those posts might have brought my opinion home to you. And as for religion, what the hell is the Christian Identity movement? They have a highly perverse view of Christianity, but they think they are religious. I never even mentioned the Order (an offshoot of them )with all of their bank robberies–religious based.

There are a large number of muslims in this country, mostly peaceful. Are you going to track them all? I’m sure there is serious surveillance going on. The terror cells tend to get infiltrated by police. I’m all for tracking the people from radical mosques or jihadist websites.

We have a hell of a lot more flights in this country than you do in Israel. Since 9/11, have we had a lot of hijackings? It’s 6 AM, and I’ve been up all night, so I could be wrong, but I can’t think of a single one. There were issues with attempts in 2004. I’m sure I will get corrected if I am wrong. We are doing something right.

Who has been doing mass murders here recently? Is it Arabs? No. The recent ones that come to mind are our white psycho female ex-postal employee very close to where I work, and Virginia Tech which was a male disturbed Asian college student. “Most mass murderers are male, white, conservative and come from relatively stable, lower-middle-class backgrounds” (yes, that does not fit the latest murders) http://www.mayhem.net/Crime/murder1.html But once again, I’m not saying that we shouldn’t worry about Arabs, so don’t have a fit.

You complain I bring up McVeigh from 1996 (by far the most serious domestic terrorist act). (Personally, if I were going to do terrorism, I would pick a building that didn’t have a day care center in it.) You mention Kahane–he was assasinated in 1990. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t important, but don’t criticize my time frame.

I really need to go to bed and fret. Peace be upon you.
