On Lifelike Pundits. Read the whole thing, but here’s the money quote:

* U.S. spy agencies, which were overseen by Tenet, lacked a comprehensive strategic plan to counter Osama bin Laden prior to 9/11. The inspector general concluded that Tenet “by virtue of his position, bears ultimate responsibility for the fact that no such strategic plan was ever created.”

* The CIA’s analysis of al-Qaida before Sept. 2001 was lacking. No comprehensive report focusing on bin Laden was written after 1993, and no comprehensive report laying out the threats of 2001 was assembled. “A number of important issues were covered insufficiently or not at all,” the report found.

OK Kostards (and various and sundry other bleating bumblefarts), tell us again how Bu$hHitlerMcHalliCheney “dropped the ball.”

Aren’t you supposed to be actually handed a ball before you can “drop” it?

And it was this same information, or the lack thereof that King George insisted Saddam Hussein was stockpiling WMD in the form of chemical and biological weapons and that he was going to have a nuclear bomb within months. It was also this information that said that Saddam either was collaborating with Al Qaeda or that he had something to do with the attacks on 9/11.

But there were some things known by the CIA and other intelligence agencies about Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. Enough to put together a Presidential Briefing on August 6th of 2001 detailing Osama’s determination to attack the US using planes.

We also knew about most of the 19 hijackers while they were in this country learning how to fly similators, but nobody would connect the dots. (not for a lack of trying)

We also know that Richard Clarke kept warning about Al Qaeda being the number one threat that we should be looking out for, yet Condi had different agendas.

So, while you want to blame Clinton and Tenent for ALL of this, you should look at the entire picture and accept the fact that this was a failure encompassing administrations going all the way back to Truman’s.

And that is all that much bally-hooed briefing said. “Al-Qaeda wanting to attack US using planes.”

Now, I don’t know if you’re capable of doing this (and if you are, please run, don’t walk, to Langley and offer your services right this instant), but I know that I’m not capable of extrapolating from that sort of a “briefing” to “19 Middle Eastern males are in the country taking flight lessons and, on the 11th of September, they’ll hijack four planes and attempt to use them as cruise missiles.”

I mean, what on Earth would you expect anyone to do with information like that? Start screening every single Middle Easterner purchasing a ticket? Mind you, I wouldn’t have any objections to that, but imagine the howling in the MSM as well as among the Usual Suspects if they’d done anything even approaching that.

With what we know now it would make sense, but kindly remember that terrorists hijacking planes to commit suicide wasn’t something that had ever been done before prior to 9/11.

    Yeah, hindsight is 20/20.

    Deej,

C’mon now, King George? GWB has plenty of faults, as do we all, but imperial designs? Really.

Notice my emphasis above. This concludes that President Clinton and Madeline Albright lied to the American people when they claimed to hand over detailed plans on al Qaeda to President Bush. There was no plan and no substantial analysis done during the ENTIRE Clinton administration.

August 6 to September 11. You’re right, George W. Bush had so much time to respond to that presidential briefing that it is much worse than the 8 FREAKING YEARS Clinton pissed away without responding effectively. And please, don’t mention bombing the aspirin factory or the empty camp. I said responding effectively

I’d say Clinton scr*wed the pooch, but that accusation might be taken to mean something ENTIRELY different since Clinton was known for his extracurricular activities.

Have you once heard me refer to Clinton as my “hero”? Don’t you think it is possible that I might also blame Clinton as well as Bush for a lot of this shit?

It was also Tenent who advised Clinton that there wasn’t a viable way to get Osama when he was “offered up on that silver platter”.

Yes, Bush was in office for eight months. Plenty of time to get a strategy going for something as important as this. The point I am making is that the threat of terrorism was so low on the list of priorities with the Bush administration, that instead of expanding existing programs, they actually closed them down or reshuffled the priorities.

Eight months is almost a lifetime in a four year term.

Ah, the “no one could see this coming” excuse.

Well, if this PDB had been inserted in “My Pet Goat”, it might have actually been read by Bush, but it would only have been a group of hard-to-pronounce words to him.

As far as nobody ever imagining this happening? Sorry, they imagined it quite well a few months earlier when Bush was attending the G-8 summit in Italy. There had been threats then of Al Qaeda flying planes into the summit, which prompted Bush to stay on the USS Enterprise.

I mean, what on Earth would you expect anyone to do with information like that?

Oh, I dunno, maybe have someone look into it? Maybe step up airport security?

I find it rather amazing that within a couple of hours we were able to determine not only the identity of each of the hijackers, but their entire activities over the previous time they spent here in the US.

People noticed these hijackers. Some had even guessed what they were up to. Forget the “wall between the agencies”, there was a wall between the different turfs inside of the FBI.

Do I blame Bush? You betcha. I blame him, Clinton, Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, LBJ, Kennedy, Eisenhower, and Truman all for foreign policies that eventually led up to the attacks on 9/11. I tend to blame the last four administrations more because our failures to detect go back at least that far.

Bush had no plan to revamp or even revitalize the “Clinton-era” CIA and FBI. If he did, he hadn’t started it almost 25 percent into his administration, so it wasn’t that big of a deal to him.

One minute you’re moaning about people “overreacting” about “brown people” acting suspiciously on a ferry, and the next you’re saying that Bush should have been all knowing on who and how Sept. 11 was going to come down.

Pre-9/11 you would have said the EXACT same thing about 19 Middle Eastern men taking flying lessons and then hijacking passenger planes, and using them and their unfortunate passengers as flying missiles.

Hey..lay off the Brown People. What’s so suspicious about taking flying lessons…without learning how to land? Get a grip you Right-Wing Racist Kooks!

Can’t have it both ways Deej….either people keep their eyes peeled and report suspicious behavior of anyone fitting the description of those that we know are capable and willing to carry out attacks like 9/11 (I’m sure that if any blonde haired, blue eyed Swedes had been part of the plot we would have heard about it.) or we ignore even the information of the CIA, and FBI about ANYONE fitting that description, since the first thing the Left loves to scream is RACISIM!!! If Bush had jumped on this and increased Airport security and announced that everyone keep an eye out for suspicious Middle Eastern men running around….the Left would have shit their diapers running to the defense of those poor oppressed brown people.

Which of course is why Airport Security now targets little white Grandmas and lets the young Mid East males walk through with bulging backpacks without a second glance.

No-No, Skye. It’s all OUR fault!

Those poor, oppressed brown-people were just acting out in rage & frustration at the ill-advised foreign policies of the Evil and Imperialist U.S., inflicted on them by cruel, heartless presidential greed-mongers.

And let’s not get started will any notions about how “people can be frustrated without resorting to murderous violence” or how “there are ways to deal with meddling foreign governments that don’t include explosives.”

After all, these poor unfortunates just aren’t that bright - not that far up the societal/cultural ladder.

They can’t be expected to control their impulses or violence - they need to be helped, guided and most of all indulged (not unlike occasionally willful children) until, as a people, they can be brought up to a point where they are ready to join the rest of their Fellow Travellers.

Until then it is up to us, their betters in the West, to handle them carefully - step gently around them - to avoid offending their primitive sensibilities, inspiring them to kill as many people as they can reach.

For certainly - as they only dance like puppets on strings based on the actions of the U.S. - it will certainly and always be our fault if they do.

    Isn’t that right, Deej?

Take it back to the Brits, if you must- the middle east was stirred up and has never settled down since the clusterfuck of partitioning post WWI.

Fighting is, has always been, and is likely to always be, an Arab hobby, like it is with the Irish.

The knack is making sure they are too busy fighting each other to think about attacking anyone else.

As an example, my own family: Known as the Fighting Macs, they (coalmining hard-drinking short evil scots-Irish bastards to a man) fight among themselves for entertainment- cold, snubbing social fighting among the matriarchs, rib-crushing ear-ripping pub pint-glassing ’stitch that matey’ brawling among the young men. This is a way of life.

However, if an outsider threatens one of us, any one, even the guy who’s ear you tore off last night, the clan unites against the interloper.

Only family have the privilege of fighting one of us…. everyone else gets to fight all of us.

There was a point where the Muslims (specifically the Arabs, who provoke so much of this bullshit) could have been diverted into nice, calm, camel-backed civil war.

When that window passed us I don’t know. But now, they’re uniting more and more against us, and there is little we can do to stop it. Not defending is not an option, attacking causes more consolidation, and I personally cannot condone genocide.

We’re living in a miracle of modern politics- or to quote the old curse, interesting times.

I love the sentiment with those pieces, but it always kind of bothers me that it’s commercials toying with our emotions. I guess if gets people to think about soldiers/veterans, it’s worth it.

I would link the long LAT article about the CIA review, but their search engine is being worked on (commie plot, no doubt). It’s worth reading a serious article and not just this little piece.

Can’t we all just get along? esp you Muscledaddy (If I bold your name, everything is bold–forgive me for any apparent lack of respect). The issue is fuck-ups inside the CIA. The mistakes being described here are not Bush’s fault. I think it’s more relevant to understand the errors within the CIA and hope we can keep them from happening again.

Of course, the terrorists are primarily responsible for terrorism. However, we should examine the actions of the people that could have intervened and fucked up–not to burn them at the stake, but to learn for the future.

Clearly the terrorism plans were not handled well under Clinton. There was no coherent, functioning watch-list program when the hijackers entered the US. If that was not in place in the 8 months after Bush took office, it was not in place before. That has been changed, although apprarently they don’t put the names of the really dangerous ones on there, because they don’t want to tip off anybody that we know about them.

To me, this is the money quote:
50-60 people read cables warning about 2 terrorists about to enter or already having entered our country. They failed to put them on a State Dept watch list or share the info with the FBI until one month before the attacks. “That failure is widely considered the most significant missed opportunity to detect or disrupt the Sept. 11 plot.”
—that is not Bush’s fault by any means, even though it happened during his administration–he does not monitor the inner workings of the CIA

There are things I do fault Bush for, but I’ll pass on details.

Words of wisdom, PC. Nicely put.

PC brings some calm to the table and has a valid point.

If left to the Libs, we would have an intelligence agency that would mirror the NY-Slimes, revealing our every move, what we know of the other’s incentives, their intent, our strengths and weaknesses, and what we would do…All Of It! All the while, setting up their own little schemes to rake in the dough (re: Oil For Food)

Yeah, who in any kind of law enforcement or even the most average of citizens wouldn’t get the message when middle eastern men want to learn to fly commercial airliners, with no prior flying experience, no future piloting prospects, and no concern at all for learning to land. Any society that is so clueless as to allow that kind of obvious infiltration can’t be expected to get much of anything right, without a hard slap in the face. Can’t really blame any one administration or party for this–it’s everyone’s failure. Not again, at least not where I can see ‘em, though.

I’d have been perfectly content to leave this @ CIA clusters, but when DJ decided to lay the blame for 9-11 squarely at the feet of the America’s EVIL Foreign Policy™ (in a Ron Paul America-had-it-coming moment) rather than on the Genetically-Blameless-Brown-People™…
who, you know, actually seem to be slaughtering infidels on a daily basis

I felt the need to take the viewpoint of that “blamelessness” out a couple of extra steps, just to illustrate how dumb it really sounds.

(I now return you to your regularly-scheduled clusterfucks…)

Oh, I agree completely with that, MuscleDaddy, my comment was more of a general nature.

Because nothing gets me more irritated than the usual “it’s our own fault that poor oppressed brown-skinned people feel an urge to brutally murder innocent civilians.”

Even if, for the sake of argument and nothing more (and a particularly stupid argument at that), we accept that premise, IT DOESN’T FUCKING MATTER.

I don’t give a shit what their reasons are, my only objective, my SOLE objective, is to make sure that we kill them before they kill us. And if we have to kill all of them, and I hope not, to reach that goal, then so be it.

    I. Don’t. Care.
