That’s John Kreisel. He is one of our finest! He was golfing last Friday at an event organized by the parents of one of his buddies, Brian McDonough who was KIA in Iraq at the same time John was wounded. It was to raise money for our wounded soldiers. The whole family was involved. Aunts, uncles, etc. Brian’s family are some of the nicest people you ever want to meet. I am in awe of their dedication and service. They’ve lost their loved one but somehow make something positive come about. John lost his legs but refuses to call it quits. I couldn’t be prouder of them all!

In case you hadn’t noticed lately, Mozilla has pretty much “jumped the shark” on its reliability. It is becoming very buggy. I had to remove it from three XP boxes here last week because it started to mess with the Windows Explorer. I could no longer open up folders, because there is a conflict with a couple of .dll files and Mozilla.

Any recommendations man? is it better to stick with Mozilla or maybe switch over to Opera?

I dunno, it is kind of a tweener thing right now.

I know that there are many here who swear by FireFix over Internet Exploder because they think it is more “secure” than IE, but the reality is, pretty much all bank and financial IT departments, and quite a lot of IT professionals who want to maintain network security forbid the use of any open source browser on their systems.

Aaron told me a few months ago that one of his clients, a fairly large mortgage company, temporarily lost several of their main lenders until they could certify that none of the computers on their network was using FireFox.

For your personal computing? Stick with Mozilla if that is what floats your boat. I am using IE 7 because it is pretty seamless with Vista Business.

I am not looking to rock the boat with some of the other software I have running on this box. Sometimes it it that delicate balance that will last for months with no problems, and then without warning a MicroShaft or Mozilla update will happen and sends the entire set of spinning plates crashing to the ground.

So far, (knock on wood) I haven’t had a problem with Vista. It is pretty rock-solid, and it will warn me when I might be doing something that might be bad.

Good. I hope it royally screws up Exploder.

I wasn’t talking about Internet Explorer, I was talking about Windows Explorer, and if you are using XP, then you still use Windows Explorer.

Everytime you open a file, you use Windows Explorer. You can’t get away from it.

Most people don’t know that ALL browsers use the Windows Explorer to display a website. They also don’t know that they can actually use a folder window to go onto the internet simply by typing the address into the address bar.

When you hear people talking about IE being integrated into Windows, they are right: Internet Explorer IS Windows.

The problem with FireFix right now is that depending on some of the other software you have on you heavily-patched version of XP, there is bound to be a driver conflict sooner or later, sending the entire system into a serious crash.

MicroShaft was supposed to have come out with Service Pack 3 for XP over a year ago. Instead, they have this huge tangle of patches and “security updates” creating a ticking time-bomb on your trusty little machine.

Now before you Linux users start gloating, there is a huge and devestating surprise coming down the pike when it comes to Linux. (can you say, “MicroSoft Linux”? Look for it within the year after a little publicized lawsuit settles)

And Mac? Well, nothing works for Mac…

You may be right about an ultimate crash. Still, I don’t ever plan to go back to IE…and yes, I misread your post when you mentioned Windows Explorer.

The first time MS ticked me off was when I went from WIn 3.11 to 98…first time I invoked my Procomm, all my Procomm, netscape, and some other program went POOF! Took me three days to rebuild the thing.

The very latest of the tick offs was when I thought that maybe, just maybe, MS had redeemed itself with IE 7.0. WRONGO. It trashed my router settings so badly that I had to reformat and reinstall EVERYTHING.

I’ve had one major problem with Firefox, and that was when a stupid site changed my browser font settings. THAT is minor compared to what MS does.

I’ve spent the bulk of my week setting up our new Vista machines in the high school. Have also found a conveeeenient feature, if you send an Email from a Vista machine with an attached file to someone with an XP machine, it gets compressed into a WinRAR file…regardless of the file type (except for PDF files). If you don’t know how to work with these files, then you are going to have a headache. My principal sent me a file for the website that was saved as a Word document. It came to me at home as a .docx file that I had to uncompress and edit. When I went back into school to help him, what we did was save it as three different types of Word documents…including a Word 2003 document. It came to me compressed every time.

Other than that, I really don’t mind Vista much….seems like most of the development money and effort went into mucking with the interfaces of all the Office products and giving us cute little side packages that will never be used…..I wish the effort had been put into making it not so fat byte wise and making it more compatible with older OS’s……
