Cigars Light Up Troops’ Lives

By KEITH MORELLI, The Tampa Tribune

Published: August 25, 2007

TAMPA - Amid the explosions echoing through the mountains of Afghanistan or the ruins of a neighborhood in Iraq, the robust aroma of a fine cigar is helping U.S. troops remember life back home.

Quality cigars, by some estimates, are second only to Starbucks coffee on the wish list of troops overseas. Where but Tampa, Cigar City, can the need best be met?

Enter Thompson Cigars, a 92-year-old retailer near Tampa International Airport, along with a dedicated employee and an ex-Navy man with a passion for helping the troops overseas.

‘The cigars are very popular,’ said Air Force Sgt. John Jewell in an e-mail to the Tribune from Afghanistan on Friday. He said he initially started smoking cigars to keep the bugs away and is first to get the boxes of cigars from Thompson Cigars, which he doles out to fellow troops.

‘I did not think that many people smoked cigars,’ wrote Jewell, of Brandon. ‘But I soon found out that there was a big demand all over this theater and with people working 12 or more hours a day, it provided the perfect excuse to congregate and talk while having a cigar.

‘Even people who did not smoke much, or at all, would gather,’ he wrote. ‘We call it mental health sessions.’

Many of the troops save their cigars for after dangerous missions, he said.

Jewell often has extra cigars and likes to hand them out to soldiers, particularly ones who have had bad days.

‘You should see the smiles,’ he said. He credits Thompson Cigars with improving morale among the troops.

‘It is an opportunity to have a taste of home and to relax,’ he said, ‘and we certainly need that here.’

A month after terrorists struck New York and Washington on Sept. 11, Thompson began getting requests from overseas troops for cigars. Initially the company just sent free boxes of cigars to those who asked.

Now it’s a big-time giveaway. About 10,000 free cigars of all brands and varieties were shipped last year to troops, mostly in Iraq and Afghanistan. That amounts to $50,000 worth of finely rolled tobacco, said Thompson Cigars’ owner, Carlos Franzblau.

‘They are making an incredible sacrifice,’ he said from the lobby of his business. ‘It’s the least we could do. This offers them a chance to have a cigar, relax and take it easy. It’s one of the few pleasures they can enjoy over there.’

A Celebratory Smoke

Cigars typically are a celebration of success, he said, and for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, a good cigar means ‘you made it through another day.’

In a small cubicle in the Thompson warehouse is Marilyn Taylor, a Cuban-born woman who grew up in Tampa and has been around cigars all her life. She is the ‘Cigar Queen’ who arranges shipments of cigars to troops overseas.

It began with a box or two at a time, she said. Now she packs 20 to 25 boxes every two weeks, each box filled with 300 to 350 cigars. They come from boxes that are broken or from returned boxes. Sometimes they are a less-expensive $3 variety; sometimes they’re high-quality $15 stogies.

‘I’ve made a lot of friends,’ Taylor said Friday.

Her cubicle has evidence of that. Photos of military men and women hoisting thick cigars adorn the walls. Plaques with photos and words of thanks hang below five folded flags that sit atop the partition. She said she has received more than 30 flags from troops saying thanks for the smokes.

Once, an Illinois soldier on leave brought his family to Orlando for a vacation. He and the family drove from Orlando to Tampa to thank Taylor and give her a big hug.

‘It was pretty emotional,’ she said. ‘It made me cry.’

The work is most gratifying, she said. ‘It’s wonderful. It’s absolutely wonderful. We’ve never had to buy a flag. I keep getting them from soldiers.’

She keeps all the correspondence - thousands of e-mails and as many as 500 photos.

One soldier sent her an e-mail saying he saved a box of Thompson cigars until the 230th birthday of the Marine Corps on Nov. 10, 2005. He handed them out to fellow solders in a bombed-out bunker.

‘It was not the most regal of cigar bars, but it was all we had and what a great time it was,’ wrote 1st Sgt Rene Perez, stationed at the time in Al Anbar province in Iraq.

Taylor said she has gotten thanks from privates and generals, from soldiers in the mountains of Afghanistan and bomb-damaged cities of Iraq, even from a couple of chaplains.

She has plenty of cigars to pick from. The whole warehouse area is a huge humidor, kept a cool 60 degrees with a steady 70 percent humidity. One corner is reserved for her work tossing expensive Romeo Y Julieta and Padrons, as well as cigarillos and Swisher Sweets, into shipping boxes.

‘And It Keeps The Bugs Away’

Bob Williams hasn’t forgotten the troops, either. The 60-year-old Pasco County man spearheads efforts to send gift packages to the troops overseas, often working closely with Thompson Cigars.

This week, he was involved in an effort to collect goodies for troops during a Tampa Yankees home game Friday night.

Williams said that after Starbucks coffee, the second-most requested item is cigars.

‘The guys over there sometimes are bored out of their minds,’ Williams said. ‘And it’s buggy. They like to sit down, have a good cigar, and it keeps the bugs away.’

Recently, Thompson Cigars gave Williams 200 humidors along with 700 cigars to send to the troops. ‘Whenever I go over to Thompson, I walk out with a carload full of stuff. They go overboard.

‘Anybody who writes to them asking, ‘Can you send us cigars?’ they send 300 of them,’ Williams said. ‘I know special forces guys in Afghanistan who, after a successful mission, they like to come back and enjoy a nice cigar.

‘Giving them cigars and cigar cutters is like handing out $100 bills,’ Williams said. ‘You can see the morale go up.’

Been a Thompson’s customer for years, and this proves why. They always treated me good when I had to order from overseas, and the people at the factory and store in Tampa are some of the friendliest you’ll ever meet. Gave them my name on a purchase the first time there, the guy looks it up, checks the customer number and says “Damn, you’ve been buying from us for a LONG time! What’d we do, start before you were legal to smoke cigars?” :em99:

Thanks. I was going to say who would begrudge soldiers smoking cigars when they are doing much dangerous things like fighting on the battlefield? However, Caveman says it happens (with cigarettes).

Smoked lightly for several years, but never understood the appeal of cigars, but whatever floats your boat. I do want to kill the people that smoke them in public.

    Sounds like a wonderful company.

Dude–you can’t self-medicate with prescription drugs! Anti-psychotics tend to have nasty side effects, like causing diabetes, massive weight gain, sedation. Not stuff you would want to take unless you had to. (Let’s just hypothetically ascribe that to general knowledge.)

Maybe I should include cigars in the packages when I finally get the SoldiersAngel thing to work. That would not have occurred to me, so this is a particularly useful post. (I was very ill and missed their phone calls.) I would gratefully accept suggestions of brands to buy. (I will probably not mail order from this wonderful company.)

And the ad is for a company in Switzerland. If someone wants to pay $$$ for an ad for legally-obtained goods, that’s called “capitalism”. The U.S. doesn’t have control over what the Swiss do and the Swiss don’t have control over what the U.S. does. If someone wants to pay outrageous amounts of money for a cigar that isn’t any better, or only slightly better, than something that costs 1%, that’s their problem, as far as I’m concerned. Myself? I’ll stick to non-Cubanos (i.e.: Dominican or Tampa-rolled) until the embargo is lifted.

Hey, when I was in Afghanistan, there was an informal “cigar club” in my unit that enjoyed Cigars from Thompson, no less, and us being Florida Guardsmen, as well! The man who got the “club” started, and got them for anyone who wanted one is at rest in Arlington now, but he’d share ANY kind of cigar he had! As far as brand preference, I’d go for either a Partagas or a Macanudo any day, but Arturo Fuentes are a winner, as well as Punch!

Yeah, Crunchie, a car dealer scotched a sale to my father by telling him that the car had a Japanese engine. He was in the Navy in WWII. He doesn’t give my brother a hard time for buying Jap cars anymore, but he did for a while.

I hear ya Wayne. With the type of hatred over Pearl Harbor, followed by the way the Japs conducted the war, there wasn’t much of a forgive and forget mentality afterwards. When I was in elementary school my two best friends were Japanese/Swedish (both parents 100% full blooded immigrants)twins. My uncle called them “those Jap boys” right up until the day he died, even though he liked them.

Hey IRR, where in FL you livin’?

My Dad was in the Pacific War and refused to buy a Jap car until the late, late ’70’s, however he did drive VW bugs from ‘61 till he got a Toyota in ‘79. Go figure.

While this is certainly a very nice gesture, I do wonder at the wisdom of encouraging smoking. I am always heartend when I see people willing to spend potential profits to cheer up our soldiers. :em69: :em93: And to all-still trying to get ME to the darkside? :em95:

It’s what guys do. Besides…these soldiers are getting shot at, dodging IEDs, Car Bombers, heat, sand, DAMN big Camel Spiders, scorpions, sun stroke, dehydration, loneliness…..and that’s just on a good day. I don’t think a good cigar on occasion is going to endanger their health too much.

Holy Crap Mrs. M, thanks for giving me nightmare fodder with that Camel Spider link…..jeeeeezus.

About two years ago, I got bit by a spider in the crook of the elbow while I was asleep. Funny thing was, I had a nightmare at the same time about a spider jumping up and biting me…..must have been my subconscious sounding the alarm about the bite. Anyway, I woke up with this bb sized hole in my arm…all red and puffy, he must have chewed on me for a while. About a day later, I noticed a red streak starting at the bite and moving up my arm. As the day progressed, the streak continued to move up my arm, almost reaching my shoulder. I pointed it out to someone at school and they told me that it was the venom from the spider moving up my blood veins….and they sent me to the hospital, where I got a HUGE injection of anti-biotics….tests out the ying yang….and a bottle of horse pills (anti-bios).

Long story short, I used to like spiders…they’re good for killing mosquitoes, and good at killing flies, I never killed them unless they were a widow or hobo etc. Now, they’re marked. If they are in the house, they’re dead…y’all stay out in the garden and in the window sills where you belong.

When I got deployed right after 9/11, one of our CMSgts that was out before me met me at the plane. Before y’all think he was watching out for an incoming Senior NCO, allow me to clarify. He knew that SOMEWHERE in my gear was a Pelican case with 2 humidors in it and a supply of sticks for at least a couple of months. Nothing like having a good smoke with friends as the sun sets, no matter where it is.

It does not upset me if someone smokes a Cuban cigar (as long as I don’t have to deal with the smell!).

PC, you remind me of the woman at the bar in Mississippi that was bitching at her husband about my cigar, BEFORE I EVER LIT THE DAMN THING! I’d checked with the owner and stationed myself close to the ventilator, but still, she’s mouthing off. Not to ME mind you, but she knew her husband wouldn’t tell her to STFU and mind her own business, about me she wasn’t so sure.

Anyway, went to the bar for another drink, and found myself standing next to her. She tells me she didn’t like the idea of me smoking a cigar so close to her (like I couldn’t hear her before), but, says she “That actually smells pretty good. I’ve smelled pipe tobacco that’s not that mild”. I explained to her that when you spend 15 to 20 bucks on a cigar, it’d better smell good! Satisfied her to the point that before I left she’d asked for the brand (La Gloria Cubana, if you must know) so she could get some for her husband.

PC, I’m betting you’ve never been around a good cigar in your life. Try one sometime, you might enjoy it!

And I’m the co-owner, if you will, of The Cigar Intelligence Agency , so if you have any questions, just ask…

Thanks for your advice. Oh my God–you can spend $20 on one cigar? I had no idea and will totally admit ignorance of this area. I probably have never been around a good cigar–I didn’t know those vile things in doorways weren’t representative. I’m pretty timid: I would never bitch at anyone for that–I just scowl, which is extreme for me.
